"The Body Knows" - ask a medical intuitive

by Caroline Sutherland
Dear Caroline,

Lately I have felt so burned-out from my job as a newspaper reporter. It seems the world is upside down, moving so fast that I can’t seem to keep up with it. I have decided to take a 3 month sabbatical from my job, take some time to reflect, get back in touch with nature and my inner self. Do you have any ideas of how I can use this time to deepen my inner spirit and find balance in my life?

Brenda R., Omaha Nebraska

Dear Brenda,

What a wonderful idea – a sabbatical. Oh that more of us were able to do the same. Historically many cultures take time out every few years to go into nature, meditate and get in touch with their inner selves through contemplation and ritual. This is called vision questing. It doesn’t need to be anything formal – just making the commitment to relax and distress is very commendable. Summer is the perfect time for this.

To use this time productively is actually counter productive – take a few days or maybe a few weeks to just BE. Just move when the spirit moves you. If you are lucky enough to live near a lake or river, the presence of water can be immensely healing. Often if I sit by the ocean or any body of water, I can tune into the rhythm or the waves or the river passing by and receive distinct messages that are very personal for me. A word or phrase will call to me from the ocean and I integrate this phrase into my meditation.

Meditation will hopefully be an important point – even a highlight of your day during this time. Take a few deep breaths, sit and tune into the sounds of nature – the birds, the rustle of the leaves in the trees, the air, the dryness, the dampness, the wind – all carry healing and messages. Just feel the deep healing penetrate your soul.

We are so often unaware of the tension that we carry – it finally starts to let go after a few weeks of doing nothing especially if we are away from the constant input of our everyday world.

I remember many years ago, dating a very nice man who had many wonderful qualities. He was interested in marriage but I was hesitant feeling that we really were not bonded to the degree that we should be to make such a commitment to each other. I decided to take a break, take two weeks and visit a beautiful island in French Polynesia. As I sat on the beach, I asked my inner guidance who I would like to be sitting on that beach with……….his name did not come up. I had to get away to tap into my inner feelings and without input, make my decision. A break from my daily routine gave me that opportunity.

It will be the same for you. After years as a photojournalist, just taking a break will no doubt give you insight, a new career direction or even something unexpected like a new opportunity. When we are in the “letting go” state, the universe, God, spirit, the divine moves into the space that we have created. Now there is room for something new and wonderful to occur. When we are not constantly striving or hanging on, the next step is revealed. Have a wonderful summer and come back renewed, refreshed and redirected.
