Lesson given by Rav Michael Laitman at the Bnei Baruch Kabbalah Education Center, Israel
Regular: Transcription of dubbed commentaries of Rav Laitman Capitalized Italics: transliteration from Hebrew
The subject I’d like to talk about is our perception of reality.
We want to know the world that we live in because without knowing it we are not able to progress, survive, or enjoy ourselves. Questions awaken within us even when we feel good. Questions also awaken within us because bad things happen to us from all directions. Maybe things are difficult, hence we need to get things in order; we want to be more successful. All of these questionsthe curiosity from within, and the questions that stem from our desire to better understand the worldall these, are driving us to get to know the reality that we live in.
We examine this reality just like a little child, walking around the room, analyzing things. Just as the child, we grow older and older, and then later we move on to creating different instruments. We develop all sorts of means to examine ourselves and the world around us.
All of reality is made up of two partsI, and everything that exists outside of me.
There are those who say, “I’m better off developing myself and changing myself and then the world around me will change as a result of that. I will perceive it differently. I will calm down and thus I will attune myself to see it as better.” And there are those who say, “Don’t change; just go on the way you are, you know, tear it apart, so to speakmake it so that it is attuned to you.” We can clearly see that either way we do not really manage very well, no matter what.
The best state for us to be inwhich is to really get along with the worldis referred to as a state of “complete balance” with it, to be in a state of complete understanding, equality of forces, desires and thoughts. A state of being that reveals to me, that everything within memy desires, thoughts and intentionsalso exists in the world outside of me; meaning, everyone understands me and everybody wants the same things that I do. This is what is referred to as a state of “complete balance.” There is no more perfect state then that of feeling oneself in complete balance with the world.
It is like a fetus in its mother’s womb. Everything is intended to care for it, and go along with it; it feels the same, inside and out, transparent. It requires no resistance of any kind, to raise protective walls, nothing. This is what we are truly searching for.
In science this is called “homeostasis.” Homeo means “similar” and stasis means “status,” or equality of states, to which every living thing, plant, animal and certainly, the human being, is drawn.
We are drawn to that state, with every level of consciousness, reason, matter, liquids and thoughts. Each and every level of matter, whether it is inanimate, plant, animal, or human, desires equality of form with the world that is around the “I.”
In order for me to find out how to reach equality of form, to equalize with nature and reach adhesion with the world around meso that everyone will know and want everything that I do; in order for everyone to think like me, and to have nothing against me, as in forcing things on me, or out of me; in order for everything to be loving and peacefulI need to know who I am, what exactly is the world around me, and how to achieve what we refer to as, equality of form. And that is what the wisdom of Kabbalah is intended for.
Kabbalah teaches us how to reach tranquilitya state where my feelings about the world outside of me and inside of me are in total peace with each other, in complete perfection.
All of our investigations of the world and of ourselves are done by science, and we have many means, methods and instruments that we keep developing for this purpose.
Year by year, and from generation to generation we progress more and more in our investigations. However, we have come to realize that although everyone desires to reach some form of perfection and tranquility, to be comfortable and to feel good, we end up in the opposite state, even though our means are seemingly becoming more developed from one year to the next.
So where does the problem lie? Everyone wishes for good; each and every person in the world. This is all that a person wants. The problem is that we do not know the universal reality, how it behaves, or what it is. We do not know how it is constructed, how it affects us, what we must equalize with, come close to, connect, and adhere to.
The problem lies in the fact that we are actually missing the proper toolsthe finer toolsno matter how deep we penetrate substance in order to understand nature: our nature and the nature of the external world. We are still unable to find out what nature wants, what it is there for, what the purpose is of each plane, each cell and each part of reality.
There are researchers who investigate matter in an external form: solid, gas and liquid. And there are those who delve deeper into substance, into the molecules and the chemistry between them. There are those who penetrate the atoms and the sub-atoms at their innermost level, and investigate them. And then there are those who are more advanced, and say that all these things are hidden, unknown, and incomprehensible beyond a certain level of depth and beyond. They are completely unable to understand what exactly is taking place.
This has nothing to do with their lacking of tools, but with the fact that we are created in such a way that we are unable to grasp more than a certain said level. Why? Because our grasp of reality occurs on various planes:
· the simple plane, in which we simply exist within reality, and feel that we do what we wish with it;
· an inner plane, in which we already feel that reality does what it wishes with us; and
· the deeper, innermost planewhere we begin seeing that it is neither, but that we ourselves create reality and that it is some sort of a replica of us.
This type of perception is already the subject of research of many modern scientists who tell us that there is some sort of limit beyond which our grasp of reality becomes unreachable.
And here lies the actual meeting between the sciences and the wisdom of Kabbalah. In other words, there are such research methods that enable us to delve right into the cause of things, the source of things, and completely understand the reason for the existence of the worldwhat the world wants from usand the manner in which we are able to be at peace and tranquility with it. And those who have already investigated it, who share their conclusions, are telling us magnificent things.
First of all, they say that the substance all around us isn’t just matter, but thought; it is desire, the universal desire. They say that this universal desire is all-encompassing, enveloping all of reality, and that the purpose of this universal law of reality is to be kind to everyone, to all parts of realitythat it is actually benevolent with all of us from without and from within. They also say that this “matter of reality”whether it is inanimate, plant, animal or humanmust also take a step forward towards this benevolent force, towards this thought, in order to equalize with its form, to adhere to it, to comprehend it, to feel it and connect with it.
That is why this wisdom is called “Kabbalah,” (which means “to receive” in Hebrew, ed.) because it allows us to find out how to “receive” that same aptitude from reality, and thus reflect back our aptitude towards it. This approach to discovering the true reality consists of various levels called “worlds.”
Just like researchers are able to delve deeper and deeper into matter using microscopes, or farther and farther through distances using telescopes, so too, the ones who explore reality, by means of the wisdom of Kabbalah, are able to delve deeper into substance, into this thought, into reality.
I would even go so far as to say that the process of exploration of reality itself is a real adventure, since one begins to feel and see one’s own past and future due to a sudden realization that there is no time, but that all of these things are present. It is as if the person moves back and forth along the time axis, even beyond his- or her present time.
The person realizes that all parts of the current reality, all the people around him- or her, are living according to a specific time pace, and that he- or she is able to move forward in the course of one year, the distance of several thousands years, or backward a thousand years, in a matter of seconds. This is the reason why these people who are able to make these leaps in time, are called prophets. Not because they have some wild imagination, but because they have advanced several levels forward and they are able to participate in those situations that humanity will eventually arrive at. Thus, they explain to us what it feels like. They can also become good historians, by descending to situations of the past, living within all those states, and telling us about them.
In a very same manner, we can read in the books of Kabbalah about Abraham who used to go from here to there, meeting so and so, who said this and did that. How do they know?
It’s simple. That investigative Kabbalist made a reverse move on the time axis, arriving at the same situation Abraham was in, at that same level, that same state, and he told us about that reality because he witnessed all of it, all the details. He can actually take all of his impressions from there, and pass them onto us. The only problem lies in our ability to understand it correctly since we are not present in that same adventure, that same excitement.
In addition to their ability to move back and forth in time, they also discover additional forces that exist in reality. It is not for nothing that the legends write about spirits, demons and angels. All of these forces exist. Hence a Kabbalist, who delves into the research of nature, also begins to understand what these forces are. He connects with them, uses them, takes advantage of them for our benefit, for the benefit of his personal development and our universal development, and then he tells us all about them.
Where am I going with this? Entering this quest into the exploration of reality, though difficult, captures our entire soul, our inner selves, and fills us with everything there is. And then the one who explores reality, discovers as well what it is we must reach, and the reasons for problems in every generation and every situation. It means that this isn’t just theoretical research, some sort of “pure science,” but it is also practical and relevant to the appropriate moment in time and the situation where one exists.
The wisdom of Kabbalah is intended to help humanity. How exactly does it help? First of all by revealing the past and the future which shows us the attributes we have descended to this world with, so many lifetimes ago, and the path we must follow. And then, by seeing both ends, we are able to figure out the best way to move through them.
And in whichever situation we examine along this time axis, we are able to see what forces influence and affect us, why we must marry such a woman and have such children... Everything is preordained. There aren’t any surprises, but everything originates in what we refer to as Reshimot (imprints, remembrances, spiritual genes) from our innermost preparations, just as scientists are discovering today.
We can even see that in very simple things like a pair of twins separated at birth. Thirty years later, you see one of them in Australia and the other one, let’s say, in Norway. Both married wives with the same names, right? Gave the same names to their children, you’ve heard of that, haven’t you, about cases like those? Choosing the same professions, and even living in houses with the same numbers; it is simply astounding. Why is that? It is because we are unfamiliar with reality and we are thus unable to make the connections between all these occurrences.
But what makes this happen? It is the fact that our attributes determine everything that happens to us, within every situation of our lives.
In psychology for instance, it is a well known fact that there are people who always get the short end of the stick and for others, it is quite the opposite. The person creates his own destiny in a primitive and simple manner. However, if he has the ability to know him- or her self and the affecting forces, he- or she is then able to address all of these situations in advance. We cannot escape our destiny entirely, but we can prepare for it. Meaning, we have to go through certain situations.
How can we avoid certain situations? In each and every situation we must learn something, acquire something in order to be prepared to attain the future purpose. Thus, if we already know what we must acquire in every situation, the type of knowledge, experience, the bad impressions and the good impressions, we then prepares ourselves in advance, so that reality itself changes.
There’s a beautiful article about this, by Baal HaSulam called Revelation and Concealment of the Facethe Face of the Creatorwhich states that according to the level of proficiency of a person, in switching this universal law of reality, from the back-side to face (meaning from bad to good) he- or she is able to see the world and everything that happens in a completely reversed manner.
Now we have come to address the other side of things. The wisdom of Kabbalah is not intended to be used as a pure scientific knowledge about reality, where one can engage in endless discussions over what can be found in those worlds, but quite differently. We can change those worlds. We can rise above them, and become those who determine our day to day destiny in addition to being in a state above everything else.
And all the occurrences and forces that pressure us and push us are there for one reason onlyto bring us to a state where we can govern reality.
What does it mean “to govern”? It means to reach a state of complete balance within reality, in each and every moment of my existence in it. We only need to find out what it means to be in a balanced state.
Question: How does a person know how to balance him or her self between matter and spirit?
I don’t know; the person doesn’t know. The person learns out of studying reality that there are five worlds. The lowest is our world, the material world. All the other worlds are spiritual worlds where there is no matter, like there is here in our world; only desires, forces, thoughts. And if in our world it seems to us that we can control matter, the one who elevates to a higher level above our world already realizes that matter is an effect, it’s activated and we can’t control it.
As in the example I gave, everything is inside the person: whom to marry, where to work, what one’s profession will be... Everything is sealed from the inside; it already is. But if you want to change it, you need to elevate to the level above you, since all these preparations were made for you and planted in you from Above, the way it descended and entered into your body, and then when you are at the root, from there you can change. But in our state, in our life, you will never be able to change anything.
Look at the whole of human history. You can look at anyone. A person could be poor, wealthy, strong, or healthy, it doesn’t matter who. It could be somebody who’s wise and still they’re unable to do anything with their lives. Talk to your elders and ask them, they’ll say “so life went by?” No one can control matter.
We are now in the opposite state, where the whole world, with all of its technology and its economy and everything else, is in total lack of understanding of how to exist further; what to do, how to survive and be saved from the lack of understanding. We’re in a terrible state which is the furthest from balance. And what can help us? Control over matter? Nothing can help us, because matter is only an effect.
This means that before we acquire knowledge and power to be and to change anything at a level which is a bit higher than matter, we won’t have a moment of rest. The world will just seem worse and worse for every generation that comes.
Call it spirit. Why is it called spirit? If we don’t see our clothing, it is called spirit, meaning matter itself. Take a man, remove all of the flesh and bones and whatever is on him, and what remains of him?
The fact is that you can’t see it with your eyes, smell it with your nose, or grab hold of it, but it actually is the person, and not the flesh. Flesh, we already know how to replace, how to hide it, how to make it. Go ahead! You can replace anything inside of a person and the person will remain the same, meaning that the flesh doesn’t amount to anything.
Our problem is that we don’t know this power that is inside of us, which is called “the human,” and we don’t know the forces that act on us either, on this inner person that’s inside of us; we don’t know. When we relate to the world of our surrounding reality, we relate to substancesinanimate, vegetative, animate... We don’t relate to the acting forces.
Whoever elevates to the level of seeing forces in reality and forces in people, he or she is in control. We can’t control anything, let’s not delude ourselves. Not our thoughts, not our feelings, nothing; and if a person tries to control one thing, then it turns out to be at the expense of something else. That’s not called control.
Question: What is control?
I need to hear from you for instance, that to drink this kind of water is healthier and more beneficial than another kind of water. So then I start, meaning I choose one over the other and this is considered that I control: I control one desire. I take instead of it another desire and use that one. This isn’t control. True control is that I reach the spiritual world, a higher world, a higher level above my reality. I observe my reality from there and then I choose what is good. That’s called control.
Look, as much as we reveal in nature, through all of our research and any kind of science, we only discover one thing: that everything behaves according to a definite, predetermined, absolute set of laws which never change. Everything works according to cause and effect; everything is organized according to formulas. So what are you going to change? Where do you want to penetrate and determine something? And according to what intelligence? I don’t understand that either. It is impossible.
Tell me, is there something in our lives, even at the human levelsthoughts, desires, hormones, genes, or the laws of quantum physics, no matter what, where we can change anything?
We only study the way that it exists because a change is only possible from the root, where all of the results in this world are. They’re in the beginning, where all things are born, where there is a causal level. If you enter there, if you can be there, only then you can cause a change.
Why does everyone run for government? Because from there you determine what will later happen in the country.
That’s it; this is what we need to reach. And if the point in the heart was open for someone and if he or she feels that they have some connection, an impulse to something more, something slightly higher, a higher state, it means that the person can attain it. It’s the sign that you can be “elected to the government” so to speak, to set the rules, to change the situation, and that’s what we have to achieve.
All disasters and troubles, all the things that happen to us one way or another, causing us to be unsatisfied with life, they’re all there in order to push us to elevate a little and to control reality.
These are messages that want to awaken us so we’ll have a need for this control, which is what we have to reach. And the wisdom of Kabbalah says that each and every person will eventually reach it.
Thought has no speed. Its speed is simply infinite, zero time, infinite speed which is how thought functions. Why? Take each and every cell of our body, the way it connects with all the other cells. The information is transferred at an infinite speed.
It’s also like that between all of the parts of our universe; the information, the knowledge, expands at an endless speed. Otherwise there would be no rules at all.
What are the laws we discover? We reveal the entire system, how it’s constructed and how it moves. If it is moving, then it’s moving towards balance at a certain velocity: the stars, the planets, all sort of objects, gasses, and other things. We discover laws that are not random, indicating that everything is connected to everything. This whole system knows everything about itself. It’s not that an explosion occurred here and then later on some information from this explosion will reach the other end in so many years. It isn’t the speed of light that comes out of the explosion. I’m talking about information. Information expands at an infinite velocity and its power also has the greatest infinite frequency. And that’s how it is in our body.
So whoever reaches the level of thoughts, the level of intentions, is considered to be in control. Once some knowledge of Kabbalah is attained, everything begins to be understood. I wish for you to open your eyes and to see the spiritual world and from there, to start determining everything in this world.
The thought of creation is “to give to His creatures.” Reality is a single thought that doesn’t change. It is a thought of bestowal, the bestowal of goodness. If we don’t relate to that thought which includes the whole of reality in an equal way, then we enter into some imbalance with it. According to the extent of the imbalance, we suffer.
We just don’t realize it, don’t feel it, and even when we hear about it, we just hear, and if we could feel that it is so, we would make a change. So our problem is to open our eyes and to see that it is so. The wisdom of Kabbalah helps a person see and once we see, we certainly want to correct it.
You could put your hand in a fire or jump from a tenth story, but you won’t do it, because you see that by not doing it, it’s better for you. So then to give or to receive, whatever it is, you will do what’s good for you and that’s the end of it. Hence, our entire problem is to see what’s now concealed from us and then there will be no problem, you’ll be a good kid, doing everything necessary for your own good. All of the difficulty is just in opening our eyes.
Question: If all is written then why make an effort?
It is not written when you will cross. I can now be done with this entire path and achieve balance with the Upper power, with the benevolent ‘Thought of Creation’ and enter this spiritual nirvana, literally good, benevolent, wholeness, eternity; just constantly being in an adventure that never ends. I can do it now, or suffer through twenty more incarnations, and that’s the difference.
After the point in the heart opens in a person, then the person really becomes accountable. Anyone who still doesn’t have a point in the heart lives, in the meantime as an animal, not really having any free choice.
A person lives the way he or she lives, born according to hormones and genes, moving forward until they end their life. This is also how we’ve been living in previous incarnations. From the moment that you’re given a point in the heart, which is called “a divine part from Above” it means that you were given a point from a state that is opposite to you. When you evaluate your heart, which is the sum of your attributes, against this point, which is from a state opposite to you, from the external reality, the thought of giving, of bestowing, then you can already make a comparison and learn what it is that you have to equalize yourself with, and what you’re drawn to. Before a person has the possibility of making this comparison, there’s nothing that can be required of the person. The person is simply in their nature and is considered to be like an animal.
Once the person has these two discernments inside, he or she starts to sense something disturbing, uncomfortable, not knowing what it is. The person can’t find an answer in this world because this point is located in the external reality, which is part of the Upper world, at a higher level. So from the moment the person is given these two points that already exist in him or her, the person begins to ask and to demand. From then on the person is considered as having a choice. You are actually the only person, or one of the single people that can change their destiny.
Question: Is it possible to take children and to awaken the point in the heart before it appears?
It is almost impossible, meaning that a person actually must evolve and suffer, until this point awakens in him or her.
Question: What is the body needed for?
The body, meaning this flesh, seems to us that it exists. It doesn’t exist. It doesn’t exist in this way, but is how you sense it exists. You have such senses, that you feel it exists.
Even if we look through the eyes of a dog, for example, through the senses of a dog or senses of some other creature, we would see ourselves in a different way from how we see ourselves now. A dog sees us as a sort of cloud of different smells. We know this. Meaning that we have no body. There are forces. And when we grasp it that way, it’s because we’re built in such a way that we grasp it like that. But it doesn’t really exist.
We learned this also in today’s morning lesson, that nothing exists except for the Upper reality, the Thought of Creation, the Thought of Creation to benefit each and every created being. And we are included in this thought, in equality of form and in balance. That’s the only thing that we are in.
And all of the worlds, including this world, are a concealment over our senses. We’re already in the best possible state, in the only state that exists, and we only have one problemwe have blurred senses. We can’t sense that state, but we sense something much less than that. We to clean our senses, awaken, rise, get up and feel the true state. Nothing changes except for the perception of reality, the grasping of it. Nothing else changes.
Meaning that what really changes is that part in us that perceives reality. Besides that, there is nothing. Therefore, if you think about changing anything except yourself, it’s just a mistake. Nothing will help you, you can’t change anything and this is the only thing that the world is suffering from. It keeps accumulating bitter experiences in order to eventually realize that it doesn’t help and that it’s not the way.
We need only to correct our senses and that is it.
And believe me, you’ll see an entirely different picture, that you’re at the end of correction, in eternity and wholeness, and I have no words for it. And the body? There is no body. This world? There is no this world. It is pure imagination.
Through thoughts, through our desires, through our mind, we can achieve anything. The speed of thought is infinite, not the speed of light. Thoughts expand at an infinite speed. The power of thought can penetrate through any matter with no limitations. We can definitely attain complete control over reality.
Gradually you’ll see that these concealments (HaAlamot) that are called “worlds” (Olamotthe Hebrew term for “world” derives from the Hebrew linguistic root that means “concealment,” ed.) simply vanish and everything becomes transparent, and there’s nothing besides light that fills everything.
Even those who experience clinical death tell us about it. They also say that there is nothing. They still see themselves there on the operating table, but actually they’re already elevating and becoming included in the light. The fact that we’re not even able to feel the Upper reality and observe ourselves as from the side; this is a problem. And that’s why I said once a person’s eyes are opened, it becomes okay. The person already knows what to do, so our problem is to reach and open up the eyes.
Question: But what about my body?
You just stop sensing it. How? Well sometimes it happens that you really just stop feeling your body and you can be in some kind of euphoria; nothing is hurting you. So it’s possible to feel that way for a moment. So, if it’s possible for a moment, then it’s possible for all of time, and the degree of correction you reach, according to this, you neutralize what is called your body to the extent that you don’t exist. You’re not present. You cross the barrier between life and death. Through this, you open up the spiritual world which you enter. You simply stop being attached to the body, it stops being a factor for you; but for now, keep it.

 |
World leading Kabbalist, Rav Michael Laitman, PhD has an MS in Bio Cybernetics and a PhD in Philosophy and Ontology.
Rav Laitman is the author of 25 internationally selling books on Kabbalah; his books have been translated into nine languages.
His lessons are broadcast live throughout the Internet and cable TV to tens of thousands of students the world over. In recent years he has become a sought-after lecturer in academic and learning circles in the US and Europe
His search for the meaning of life led him to the teachings of Kabbalah in the 1970’s. At first he studied Kabbalah with various teachers in Jerusalem and other parts of Israel. In 1979 he discovered his true teacher, Kabbalist Rav Baruch Shalom Halevi Ashlag (1907-1991).
From the time he met Rav Baruch Ashlag (known as the Rabash), he was never apart from him and spent most of his time in his presence, as his disciple and personal assistant. Up until his death, Rabash passed on to Rav Laitman the wisdom he had acquired from his father, Kabbalist Rav Yehuda Ashlag, known as Baal HaSulam for his Sulam commentary on The zohar (The Book of Radiance).
Rav Dr. Laitman held a successful public meeting in San-Francisco in March 2005 with leading American scientists, participants of the blockbuster hit "What the Bleep Do We Know?" Here are some of the impressions of the scientists after meeting Dr. Laitman:

Rav Laitman's Latest Book Releases:
•The Kabbalah Experience
Never has the language of Kabbalah been as clear and accessible as it is here, in this compelling, informative collection. The depth of wisdom revealed in the questions and answers of this book will inspire reflection and contemplation.
•The Path of Kabbalah
“Thou shalt not make unto thee a graven image, nor any manner of likeness” (Exodus 20:3). This commandment from the Bible is the basis of the Kabbalistic wisdom, for Kabbalists know that the only true reality is that of His Essence, the Upper Force.
