Dear Friends,
For the past decade, I've been a devoted researcher of the mysteries of Mary Magdalene. The Nag Hammadi Library and the Pistis Sophia are often on my nightstand, along with other books of interest. When I began imagining the story of Jesse, told in my new book, Landings, The Spiritual Return to Living Fully in the Body, it seemed fitting to tap into the wealth of the Magdalene’s mystery teachings as the archetypal Goddess for this healing tale.
It delights me to witness such renewed interest in the Magdalene that the sensation of the DaVinci Code has created. This revival of exploration delving into her mysteries has created a new surge of awareness and devotion to the divine feminine. I sense that the sacred marriage of the male and female energies within us all is truly coming to the forefront of universal consciousness. Such a union will elevate humanity to the finest point of our collective soul.
As the legacy holder and true leader of the new church, it was not the Magdalene’s role to preach and organize a congregation. Her body of wisdom relates to gnosis, which means that self-knowledge is the path to God. It was not her calling to organize a structured religion. That kind of approach is in opposition to her example as a spiritual pathfinder on the journey of unfolding enlightenment.
I sense that Jesus gave her teachings that only she could hold, for only she had the capacity to understand the higher mysteries. She was his highest initiate, and as the lone carrier of his true legacy, her focus was directed to the cave of inner consciousness. She withdrew from the world so that one day the world would find its way back to her.
She devoted her life to the inner path of initiation, learning the meaning of true union in a marriage of the male and female within. Through gnosis, the pursuit of self-knowledge found in the inner world of her deepest being, Mary Magdalene developed the true and only Way of finding union with the Divine. This Way cannot be read in books or found in speeches at a pulpit. It can only be found through direct experience of the divine within each and every person. That is her legacy and her hope for us all.
The old books tell us that the Master cast out Mary Magdalene’s seven devils. Thousands of years of telling this tale has lent this statement much misinterpretation, for the absence of a mature spirit can direct the mind to much misunderstanding of her mysteries. It is important to set aside book learning and lend an ear to her truth. She asks us to be the lover of wisdom and as such, she will anoint us with teachings to cultivate the advancement of our spirit.
Mary knew that seven are the vices and seven are the virtues that inhabit our inner spheres of light. These aspects of duality define existence on the earthly plane. When we open to the seven virgins of the soul with the rush of light and energy up our spine, we become active, meaning the barriers of perception are removed and the doors of limitation open to higher visionary experience.
Vision is what we are at our essence, for truly life is a vision, and until we reach beyond the spider’s web and travel to the foreign planet of our soul, we will not understand that all things are but an image in the eye of the Creator. Life is word made flesh, thus the manifestation of the spider’s web as thought manifests into form. My meditations with the essence of Mary Magdalene’s teachings led me to understand that when we open the channel of clear light, we find our footing on the celestial planet where the finest dreamers go. The spider’s web is the matter of physical existence, the earthly plane, where we experience a body that lives in duality and a mind that believes in its individuality. But the soul knows there are many dimensions beyond that of the physicality of the spider’s web.
To activate the chakras, the vices and virtues must become balanced in complementary form. It is then that the white serpent can arise, bringing your awareness up to the halo of your soul. At this level of higher consciousness you become free to travel the many layers of reality. This ordained launch and landing occurs when you illumine the seven spheres of your embodied spirit. As an awakened being of light, you are able to fly beyond the limits of the web of the physical realm, aspiring to reach the higher elevations where the master teachers reign. Mary knew this pathway and I sense she left this map for us to follow, so that someday we could discover the treasures hidden within the ultimate mystery of who we are.
