Problematic Sexuality

Developments in communication have been formidable in modern times. Topped off by the Internet, there are so many avenues to communicate to and communicate from that it takes news no time at all to make its way around the world. As a bona fide, certified techno-geek, I love going through airports because it is so wonderful to watch people connecting to the world wirelessly through their notebooks and through advanced cell phones like the Treo and Blackberry (and I love my Treo). Because information is available so quickly and readily, a lot of things that used to stay under cover are more easily revealed to masses of people. The power of the media works with the developments in communication and before you know it, a story is around the world in an instant. Can you imagine how it would have been if there was an Internet during any of the World Wars or during Watergate?
Part of the negative manifestation of our communications prowess is that negative information makes it way to our awareness quickly. A big part of that negative information has been connected with sexual scandals. Problematic displays of sexuality have appeared as lead-off stories on the news and as front page news items quite often as of late. Whether it is a politician, priest, or primary school teacher, we are seeing more and more and more instances of problematic sexuality. These are cases where the use of or attempted use of one’s sexuality has affected the life in an unproductive way. These sexual issues do not discriminate. They do not exclude the recognized and they do not exclude the average person. As a consulting astrologer, it is to your advantage to be able to see in advance the potential for problematic manifestations of sexuality in the horoscope. Especially in cases of synastry, the topic of sexuality should always be a point of discussion when it is emphasized in the horoscope.
The Sexual Identity
For as long as there has been something called astrology, the 8th House has been linked to sexuality because of its affiliation with the 8th Sign, Scorpio. While the 8th House certainly must be considered in any study of sexuality, it is the 5th House that is the focus of the sexual identity. The 5th House is to the sexual identity what the Ascendant is to the whole identity. The Ascendant shows how the identity projects itself to others. The 5th House shows the ins and outs of the sexual identity. Tendencies, proclivities, dysfunctions, you name it…….we see it first in the 5th House.
The 5th House represents the sexual identity. The 8th House, as far as sexuality is concerned, represents what happens to the sexual identity when it merges intimately with another
Gauging Sexuality
Before you get to the 5th House, examine the 2nd House. That is actually where issues concerned with love begin because when there are tensions with a significator of this House, there is a suggestion of self worth concerns in the life and self worth concerns almost always spill over into love concerns. These can become deviant when it comes to sexuality. (I have written extensively about self worth concerns in this column. Please consult the archives of this web site).
When the 2nd House significator is under tension, it is very likely that the 5th House will be also. This is a fact that reflects life’s reality. Think about it. If you feel poorly about yourself in terms of worth and value, it is not going to necessarily be easy for you to feel wonderful expressing intimacies. Defenses are learned. A lack of fulfillment becomes expected and this is where/how problems begin to manifest.
After all 2nd House considerations have been ascertained, you must first consider the planet ruling the 5th House or any planets in the 5th House. If these significators are free from tension in the horoscope, there is a suggestion that the person has no “issues” with sexuality. Things tend to flow smoothly, with ease. When a significator of the 5th House is involved in tension, it is the first indication of a suggestion that sexuality can take on problematic dimensions, especially when the 2nd House is also troubled.
Hard aspects made to the 5th House significator begin to describe the nature of the sexuality. Pluto contacts to this significator can suggest a problematic extremism in one direction or another. Neptune contacts bring on dimensions of fantasy (masturbation, etc.), insecurity, or weakness in the sense of being unable to say “no.” Uranus acts as an intensifier. Of all the planets, it is the Uranian involvement with the 5th House that seems to be most decisive as it links the needs of individuality with sexual expression through innovation, experimentation, and by being deeply affected by neurological urges in the body. Saturn always represents a control factor. This can be by being controlling or it can be by feeling controlled, restrained, or defensive. Jupiter typically expands the picture of the sexual identity by introducing the idea of “too much.” Mars heats things up in a passionate way. The Sun, Moon, Mercury, and Venus are usually the recipients of aspects. Any Mercurial tie-in with the 5th House focuses sexuality in the mind. Seeing, imagining, and thinking become important elements in the sexuality.
In gauging sexuality, you must also consider the aspects made to Venus. We are really concerned with conjunctions, squares, quindeciles and oppositions made to Venus from Mars or any of the outer planets as these contacts suggest some form of stressor challenge upon the need to relate sexually.
When the 8th House significator is under duress, the experience of sex is given to difficulties and challenges. When this is the case, the 8th House often corroborates what is shown in the 5th.
As well, do consider the 11th House. As the House opposite to the 5th, the 11th House experience has to do with the idea of being loved, of receiving love, attention, popularity, etc. These can be vital parts of one’s sexuality.
When there is tension between significators of the 2nd and 5th Houses, the interplay between the sense of self-worth and the need to give love work against each other and often manifest in some sort of sexual dysfunction, especially so in the horoscopes of women.
Examples

In the first horoscope shown here, Jupiter is conjoined by Uranus in the 11th House. This immediately suggests intensity in the sexual profile in terms of giving and receiving love. The Uranian element adds elements of innovation and the unusual. However, Mars squares Mercury in II (ruler of XI). There is a concern here with self-worth that affects the sexual profile. The Moon in V (co-ruler of XI) is part of a loose T-square with Neptune as the focal point. Neptune rules VIII. Something is other than it seems. There is a weakness or vulnerability. Saturn, co-ruler of V conjoins Venus, which is at the Saturn/Neptune (and Mars/Pluto) midpoint. There is a control factor of some kind at work. Saturn’s contact to Venus often manifests in attraction to or from people of a decidedly different age bracket.
There is a lot of food for thought here in the sexual profile of Mark Foley. Foley is the Republican politician formerly of the House of Representatives who resigned his position amidst a scandal about improper involvement with a minor.
Hillary Clinton

In lieu of the difficulties of the very public difficulties of the Clinton marriage, it is interesting to note the sexual profile of Hillary Clinton.
Mars, ruler of V is exactly conjoined by Pluto, immediately introducing the idea of extremism on some level. The pair is widely conjunct Saturn, which introduces a difficulty, a control factor of some kind. This is already a very difficult setup.
This stellium in Leo squares Venus!!!! Venus rules XI. The all-important love axis is mired under tension and stress. There would appear to be a difficulty giving love easily when it comes to deep intimacy and questions about how lovable she is. Corroborating this is the fact that Mercury, ruler of VIII, is retrograde (holding it in; a subjectivity of some kind gets in the way) and it is EXACTLY squared by Saturn. It simply doesn’t get any tougher than this.
By contrast, Bill Clinton’s horoscope has Uranus, ruler of V, trining Jupiter with Venus, ruler of VIII, strongly placed in Libra and in the Ascendant.
There would have been so much to discuss in a pre-marriage synastry session about the differences in their sexual profiles. He is very comfortable with sexuality (we know that) and her horoscope suggests that she is stressfully uncomfortable. How did this play out in their marriage?
Private Example

This is the horoscope of a very successful woman who is now a close friend. “Mary” came to me for a consultation some 7 years ago. We are now close friends.
The stellium in the 5th House is opposed by Uranus. This is a very, very heightened indication of a strong libido. You immediately sense the intensity and innovation. Sexual idealism (the conjunctions in V all suggest mental, social, and romantic idealism) is in full gear. Saturn, ruler of V, conjoins Mars. The hard aspect relationship between Mars and Saturn is a difficult one because of the confusion between assertion and regression. Hard aspects between Mars and Saturn always suggest bad judgment. The foot steps on the accelerator when it should be on the brakes and vice-versa. Here, this is all in terms of the decisions made regarding sex. Saturn, important here as ruler of V, makes a quindecile to the Moon (ruler of XI) in VIII. Mars rules VIII. Finally, there is a Grand Cross in Succedent Houses. Anytime we see this, we know that there are concerns about worth and love that deeply affect each other.
There are problems here. Neptune in II as part of the Grand Cross suggests deep insecurity about worth and value. As ruler of VII, the insecurity will be deeply connected to relationships. This woman was raped at the age of 13. Her father blamed it on her. His stinging words to her were, “You’re nothing but a whore.” There are many ways to react to that scenario if one chooses to allow it to have an affect. Mary decided that she would make her father’s words come true. Her life became a carousel display of endless meaningless encounters with men. By the time she was 30, by her estimate, she had bedded close to 300 men. She became so obsessed with sex (as a way to prove her value) that she eventually entered a sexual addiction clinic. As she told me, “I couldn’t even go to the bathroom to clean myself after urination without wanting to climax.”
“Mary” is a deeply sexual woman who dresses provocatively (Mars=Ven/Asc). With the Moon in Aries, she needs to feel as though she is leading the parade and she manages to get that need fulfilled by presenting herself in a sexual way even for business meetings where she admittedly uses her sexuality in strategic ways (teasing) for financial gain She continues to work to try and maintain control over her urges. She has become an extremely successful business woman (Sun=Moon=Mercury=Venus=Uranus=Jup/Plu).
Be Practical
Sexuality is a deeply intimate, deeply personal subject but is a necessary part of every consultation when emphasized in the horoscope. If you see a horoscope with Capricorn on V and the ruler exactly conjunct Venus with both squared by Pluto, such a situation MUST be discussed. That said, always remember that a horoscope is NOT a human being. It is a map that we use to gain insight into potentials. The manifestation of the potentials we see in a horoscope is dependent upon the life being lived by the person. You must keep all of this in mind when discussing something as deeply intimate as sexuality. Just because it is shown in the horoscope doesn’t mean that it is a fact of life. You never know how the energies in a horoscope are being used in real life before you at least have a discussion with the person in question.
Instead, use the information as a guide. If you are a consulting astrologer, the sexual profiles of each individual seen separately are vitally important, especially in the younger years. The idea is to be helpful and you achieve that by having a sensitive discussion, not by using the horoscope to point fingers.
