Understanding Midpoints
Part 5

|
In this final installment of the series on midpoint theory, we will look at one of the best example horoscope/Sort combinations that I have ever seen that shows why midpoints should be used in analysis.
Experienced readers will recognize this horoscope at first sight. Those who do not recognize it will soon understand why it is such a great example.

The first impression of this horoscope shows a western hemisphere emphasis, suggesting a giving of Self to others that may manifest in many different ways. The Sun-Moon-Ascendant blend suggests an inner core of structure and organization that is expressed in a personality that needs to be in a position to make things happen, often through ambitious pursuits if the person’s reality supports ambition. And all of this is expressed through an image that needs social acceptance, which is usually gained by being charming, flattering, attractive, etc. The eye cannot help but notice the strength of Venus as final dispositor of the horoscope and as ruler of the Sun and Ascendant Signs.
The smooth trine between the Moon and Sun shows a natural ease in public communication, especially since Jupiter conjoins the Moon, ruler and co-ruler of III and IX. Mercury’s position upon the Horizon in Aries shows the need to throw ideas out to others in an assertive fashion. With the strength of Venus and the communications prowess, we are led to think in terms of an artistic communicator spreading his message or his art to others.
There are relational concerns, for sure. The Mars-Venus conjunction is squared by Saturn (important because of Mars’ rulership of VII), suggesting a control factor upon this man’s ability to relate to others or for others to relate to him. Romance and sexuality are certainly challenged, especially with Venus’ rulership of part of the sexual profile’s 8th House. As well, the conjunction between Pluto and Neptune in VIII (highlighting that which is mystical or metaphysical) shows an uncertainty of worth (Pluto rules II) in relationship to giving love (Neptune rules V).
This brief analysis doesn’t seem out of the norm. It is a common profile. There are many people in the world, artistic and otherwise, who are challenged when it comes to romance and sexuality. But Adolf Hitler was way beyond the norm, wasn’t he? Yes, he had powerful sexual concerns. He was a powerful communicator, successful writer whose idealistic vision of German dominance in the world consumed his soul. But the man was almost indescribable in terms of his obsessions, lust for power and the maniacal way in which he made a place in history for himself. This horoscope clearly does not suggest any of the latter.
Hitler’s midpoint Sort reveals the very appropriate picture, Pluto=Sun/Moon, which is quite similar to a natal conjunction between the three planets. It suggests the sense of power and prominence, especially in terms of the natal Sun-Moon blend. This picture is more descriptive of the Hitler known to history than anything shown in his natal horoscope. In the 45 degree Sort, Uranus joins Pluto at the Sun/Moon midpoint, creating the picture, Uranus=Pluto=Sun/Moon. This is clearly a picture of a revolutionary person, one who is capable of toppling and turning over his status quo. You certainly would not be surprised to see Pluto or Uranus in a hard aspect to Hitler’s Sun or Ascendant, yet, the natal chart is devoid of extreme symbolism.
Looking further, we see AP=Venus/Saturn=Mars/Saturn, emphasizing the relational challenges shown natally in addition to his involvement with making bad decisions and the involvement with death (Mars/Saturn……putting on brakes when acceleration is called for and vice-versa, which dramatically becomes matters of death at the most extreme level).
Moon=Saturn/Neptune suggests a distressful mental state that is quite different than what you would expect from a Jupiter-Moon conjunction. This is echoed by Saturn=Mercury/Neptune, suggesting mental anguish.
Mercury=Sun/Uranus suggests mental innovation/individuation and its position at Jupiter/Saturn shows a mind preoccupied with [his version of] law and order, consequently doing anything at all to prove a point.
Sun=Mars/Uranus suggests an illumination of that which is bombastic and temperamental.
As you look at the selected pictures in Hitler’s Sort, you can “feel” how correct and fitting they are.

In summary, you should always use a midpoint Sort when you are studying a horoscope because the Sort will tend to give more depth to what’s shown natally; the Sort will give added dimensions not shown in the natal horoscope; and the Sort will emphasize themes.
