Emotional Leap Frog

I fancy myself a smart guy a quick study when it comes to cutting edge ideas that venture down unfamiliar yet stimulating territory. I could discuss ideas of quantum physics, alchemical psychology and the principles behind feng shui and seemingly catch on with a modicum of concentration. Yet, I’ll admit, when the concept your vibration is where you last left it was first introduced to me, it didn’t really sink in.
I certainly have come to understand and adopt the belief that everything is vibration - that if I harbor resentment towards a person, place or thing that the vibration of that resentment “harbors” or docks itself within the emotional and physical parts of me. It’s “locked” onto me and thus I am “locked” off by my own choosing from being able to experience authentic championing for others as well as myself. The same is true for positive emotion. If my thought vibrations regularly reside around the belief that there is always enough, then the conditions in my physical world will consistently reflect plenty.
But what did it mean exactly, this last left it part?
Even after asking for clarification, I never seemed to get answers or memorable examples that took it from a fanciful jargoned conceptual idea to an adaptable precept.
Then, the stars aligned, my resistance weakened, and with the perfect situation appearing, I really, really got it.
Months prior I was privy to information in regards to my possibly receiving a prestigious award. Try as I might to remain detached from the outcome, I was deliriously happy at the thought of such an honor after so many years of dedicated work in what I term Visionary Vocal music and anxiously awaited the official word.
The word came but not as hoped.
For political reasons, the award was shelved and so was my exuberant expectancy temporarily anyway.
My heart sank.
(author’s note: Sometimes it’s a bit uncomfortable revealing one’s humanness, but perhaps my willingness to do so here will give you the permission to let yourself off the ‘need to look and be perfec’t hook where we all long to hang our hat and instead, just honor your process.)
“What? Are you kidding me?”
The spiritually evolved, correct emotional responses flew out the window and I felt raw, hurt and unappreciated.
Quite honestly, it was a familiar yet old feeling that had lingered in the hallways of my life experience for as long as I could remember - sort of the Ghost of Unappreciations Past dragging its rusted, heavy clanging chains across my heart. In fact, who hasn’t felt that at one time or another? Yet, try as I might to rationalize its valid right to walk those inward halls, I knew that if I continued to let it roam free and clear that it’s invasion would spread doing more harm than good.
I pushed the chair back from my office desk, stood up and walked towards my backyard.
Outside, the winter air was mild but strong enough to shake the oak leaves and pine needles steadily to the ground.
My mind swirled with all the reasons why I thought that their reasoning was ridiculous and juvenile. I entertained the oh-so-familiar mind banter of why does this always happen to me? You know, that steady stream of “getting close and not being picked” kind of thought that seems to piggyback onto decade’s worth of similar patterning.
Competitions in grade school, unrequited loves, even almost nabbing the lead in the early ‘90’s television series Northern Exposure until the producers decided to make the young doctor character Jewish.
“I can play Jewish!” I remember almost pleading.
The memory now invoked a bit of a chuckle but I remember how emotionally devastating the experience was.
I walked to the shed, picked up the rake and aimed for the lawn.
Rake, rake, rake.
Breathe, breathe, breathe.
Don’t wanna feel this way.
Well, stop focusing on what you don’t want and focus on what you do.
Rake, rake, rake
Breathe, breathe, breathe
Your vibration is where you last left it.
“What?”
Your vibration is where you last left it.
There was that concept again.
And suddenly the epiphany happened.
“Oooh my god!” I internally shouted. “I get it!”
The LAST time I felt the specific emotion of injustice, not being picked, shunned, or left out, what did I do? Chances are, I lived in that emotion of pain and neglect for awhile lingering, even savoring the indignation or self-righteousness and never really did anything active to turn the situation around AS it was happening. I let it sort of run its course depleting me of joy.
Fittingly, it goes with the famous line, “Do you wanna be right or do you wanna be happy?”
In the case of this similar feeling experience, I must have checked off right on my emotional questionnaire because here was the lesson one more time.
So, if my vibration was left that way the last time something like this happened, then I’m continuing to set myself up. In other words my vibration is where I last left it AND I will keep inviting this experience into my life until I “clean it up.”
It’s merely a game of emotional leapfrog!
“Do you want this to happen again?”
“No, of course not it sucks.”
“Then right here and right now is the opportunity to change and create a new vibration.”
The light came on and I saw my chance.
“OK” rake, breathe, rake, breathe “what’s good about this?”
….well for starters, the fact that my name was even considered for such an honor is pretty awesome.
…the fact that every week out of every year, I get feedback for how my music has benefited, contributed and moved people towards a better feeling place.
…the fact that since the day I graduated college over 25 years ago, I have predominantly made my living from my creative passions is, in my opinion, monumental.
And on and on and on creating a whole list of things to appreciate.
The biggest appreciation being the ability to comprehend what was going on and rolling out a new welcome mat one that ushers in experiences of self-honoring, self recognition and a world that mirrors that back.
I began cleaning up my vibration.
What about you?
Is there recurring emotions of pain or annoyance that you keep playing leap frog with?
--does it seem that each month you find yourself worrying over finances?
Because your vibration is where you last left it, you’ll continue to create financial circumstances to worry about it. Clean it up by starting to appreciate all that you have.
--does it seem that every intimate relationship you seek always leaves you disappointed and believing in the notion that all the “good ones” are taken?
Because your vibration is where you last left it, you’ll continue to create less than optimum relationships that support your theory. Clean it up by appreciating all the relationships that you observe which are working.
--does it seem that every attempt at dieting only leaves you feeling failure and futility? Because your vibration is where you last left it, you’ll continue to create feelings of failure every time you diet. Clean it up by appreciating all the intricacies of your body and how it responds perfectly to what you put in it.
--does it seem that it’s virtually impossible to find good help and that you must do it all yourself?
Because your vibration is where you last left it, you’ll continue creating encounters with people who will disappoint and leave you to bare all the responsibility. Clean it up by appreciating everyone who shares and supports their time and skill in whatever way big or small.
Even something as inconsequential as the belief that finding parking at work gets harder and harder is VIBRATION thus parking at work becomes increasingly challenging.
Everything is vibration and we are the ones driving the vibration bus.
We are the ones deciding on which emotions we will play leap frog with.
It’s exhilarating to really get this and to start a conscious shift in each of our own vibrations to start creating more of what we do want simply by focusing on that, speaking of that, visioning that and thus experiencing that.
It’s just focus plain and simple.
It’s leap frogging with joy into a life of limitless possibility.

David continues this musical path with the release of his critically acclaimed recordings, The Healing Bridge, Travelin With The Angels, All Is Calm, All Is Bright, And Then It Is Morning, all distributed through his Los Angeles based organization, The Conscious Company. Now, his highly anticipated literary debut, Where Regret Cannot Find Me, is heralded as a fresh and exciting discovery in Spiritual literature ... a work of pure heart!
