Teachings from the Western Mystery Traditions:
The Esoteric "Paths of Return"
Archetypal Patterns
And their Influence
on Our Lives
|
|
|
by Jacquelyn Small

|
The soul lives in a formless world. For it to enter into existence and be expressive, it must take form. So our archetypal soul created a psyche as its double, or mirrored image, in order to see and feel itself as human. In so doing, an apparent dualism was born: our human or spiritual self.
Our psyche, which is the whole of the conscious and unconscious mind, contains the "blueprints" or organizing Principles within which we build all potential human qualities and experiences. These patterns are built right into the very sinews of the psyche's "body" and manifest as either Persons or Processes that are archetypal in nature. Whenever we create a mental image of any of this primordial content, it becomes an ideal. This is how we embody the archetypal Human. These inceptive ideals and images are the gods, spirits, energies, daemons, and other ageless entities and processes of a greater reality, one that gives rise to the myths, religions, rituals, and folklore of all cultures throughout the Ages.
When activated, these ageless, universal ideals come into our consciousness and seek expression through us in modern-day garb. From within we are influenced, and sometimes even overtaken, by their impressions. Some of these powerful imprints and patterns enhance our lives, while others bring us great ordeals, illness or obstacles we must learn to overcome: Healer, Leader, Lover, Warrior, Magician, Benevolent Mother, Wise Man these are types who aid us in our unfolding. The Shadow, Victim, Perpetrator, Addict, Rageaholic, Codependent are types that bring us lessons in divine Love by invoking ignorance, self degradation, or unlove. Yet, they, too, are aiding us in our unfolding. All of this type of archetypal inner work is used for the good of the whole as we learn to manifest Spirit, or the ideal, in concrete form.
To activate an archetypal pattern, we invoke it. This means we become fascinated by its attributes, literally drawn into its gravitational "pull", which is the cosmic Law of Attraction in operation. We thereby call down an archetype as we rise up to meet it. In other words, we are resonating to its qualities; something in us matches (desires and acts out) that "something" that makes it what it is. This is how we are molded by a particular archetype. And before we know it, we are experiencing signs of it manifesting in our lives. These psychic patterns are the physical scaffolding upon which the soul, our divine Self in human form, comes upon us like Fate. Through this process of invocation and desire, the ideal of anything can be realized (made real) in the ordinary world.
For the longest time now, our psyche has been trapped in the human condition, not suspecting that we belong to the immortal worlds. When any one of us realizes this, a great cycle ends, known as the "cycle of necessity" wherein we've gone through rounds and rounds of lessons for the realization of our divinity. Psyche and Soul, then, are divine Partners, here for a very sacred work that only a "divine couple" can do. Once Psyche realizes she is divine, she begins to merge us back into the whole from whence we?ve come. And when we all finally awaken together as one group Soul, a cycle of necessity ends for an enlightened Humanity. Having completed our work here, our consciousness will gently untangle itself from the human condition and is free to move on into the next dimension of experiencing itself in some new guise.
Troublesome Complexes
Sometimes, as we well know, an archetypal pattern can possess us and become a troublesome "complex", in Freudian or Jungian terms. Then we know we are exaggerating a fragmented identity that is wounded, and seeking a way to heal. We've all heard such things as "She has a Messiah complex," or "He's a Martyr." Or we'll notice, with horror, that we've fallen under the influence of the Devouring Mother or the Shadow and have behaved in some inappropriate, rude, or hurtful manner. When this happens, we feel humiliated and are given the chance to learn from our mistake. We all know what it feels like to become intensely reactive for no real reason and automatically act out as though we have no conscious control over our behavior. This is a sign that a complex has hold of us and is acting out to be known.
Our task, then -- and it can truly become an intriguing one is to discover the empowering images behind those intense feelings. Then we can access the particular aspect of our divinity that is trying to express. In this manner, we can learn to capture the greater meaning of our behavior, feelings, and ideas. If we can accept this greater symbolic life as real, we are choosing to consciously participate in creation. When the archetypal and human dimensions of consciousness can merge together consciously, we progress toward a whole new state of being, one never before realized in this ordinary human world. We are aiding in the Great Work of evolution. If we believe in the evolution of our species, we must realize that the archetypes, too, can become gridlocked in outworn patterns and are seeking new ways to be.
As you self-reflect in this manner, you can see that the human psyche was designed for the purpose of working out, or maybe I should say living through the trials and tribulations of the human condition in order to individuate, or become whole. Through this process we all gradually become unique expressions of the one divine Self here on earth. Through the science of the soul, we learn to see our outer life as the mirrored reflection of our soul's current status in its descent into matter.
If you know that you've been singled out by divine choice and intention from the beginning of the world, then you will feel uplifted beyond the transitoriness and meaninglessness of ordinary human existence. You will be transported to a whole new state of dignity and meaningful living, like one who knows you have a part in the divine world drama. This fact, when fully realized -- will heal your psyche of its wounds and enable you to step into your true identity as a spiritual being in human form.
