#2 Using Subtext Thinking
to Guide Preparation
|
 |
by Noel Tyl
|

|
Astrologers should talk to themselves!!! Not walking down the street, mind you, but during the organization of horoscope measurements. Using a subtext of thought as you proceed with orderly measurement orientation helps put reality onto the symbolic framework. Right away, we begin to get into possible patterns of personality development; we meet the person sooner, rather than later!
Let’s proceed with measurement organization for this lady’s horoscope, with a helpful subtext every step of the way. Rather than noting, “Oh, look at this! She’s got Saturn quindecile Mercury,” we should think, “Saturn-rx phenomenology will be in play here, affecting the mind and nervous system strongly, with particular focus on self-worth anxiety [since Mercury rules the 2nd] and an anxiety about not being loveable [since Mercury rules the 11th].”
So let’s start from the beginning, the first impression of the horoscope, and build from there.
First, we notice the conspicuous orientation of the horoscope to an emphasis above the horizon. This almost always suggests the propensity to being pushed around by life circumstances, even victimized. What would cause this?
Immediately we notice Saturn-retrograde in the 4th There’s our key! Extreme problems with the father relationship, possibly later projected to men in general. How does Saturn fit in here with the rest of the symbologies?
Saturn is quindecile Mercury -- Saturn-rx phenomenology, the father situation, will affect the mind and nervous system strongly, with particular focus on self-worth anxiety [since Mercury rules the 2nd] and an anxiety about not being loveable [since Mercury rules the 11th]. Saturn is also quindecile the Midheaven This echoes all the tension and highlights one parent in particular, probably the father. And it is even carried into a square with the Jupiter-Neptune axis Since Jupiter and Neptune rule the 5th and 8th Houses, respectively, we can expect some serious complications with loving, with sexuality; were there early sexual difficulties in the home or at a very young age … needing so desperately to be loved?
Saturn is also square the Moon, AND Neptune opposes it The mother is surely caught up in all this too, with the father probably out of the picture; was the mother able to cope? Saturn’s in the 4th, and Pluto ruling the 4th is peregrine; mother concerns are running away with the whole picture here, started within the Saturn-rx phenomenon. Were mother and daughter victimized by the same father problem?
Pluto is at the Sun/Moon midpoint we know that all the problems are going to undermine relationship, especially since Uranus, ruler of the 7th is also peregrine! This lady becomes quite a risk-taking, avant-garde person, searching, searching for love? Self-dramatizing? Leo Ascendant, Sun quintile Uranus and Neptune!
And that Grand Trine in Water among Saturn, Mars, and the Node! --Now we start seeing some of this lady’s defenses within all this, the closed circuit of emotional self-sufficiency, which we know works against satisfactory, reciprocal relationships, that which she needs so much, with that public Moon in Aquarius, opposed by Neptune; the peregrine Uranus on the Aries Point, Uranus ruling the 7th!!
That Venus in Aries is always flirtatiousness and this is her way to test others about her desirability? Interesting how the Venus tie with the Moon is so supportive for her; are relationships that she allows really only flirtatiously thin? Is she that afraid?
That Jupiter-Neptune opposition squared by the powerful statement of Saturn-rx will be tough to handle. It is angular and imposing, strongly sexual in references sex as a strategy perhaps? As she fights backand it’s all tied in through the obsessive hold on the mind the quindecile with Mercury.
And so it can go! --Isn’t it fascinating how we have not just catalogued measurements, but we have given them potential and direction, and we have made creative deductions that put measurements together within patterns of known reality, into patterns of the ways people behave to fulfill their needs and work through challenges. With practice, this rich analytical orientation can all be accomplished within two minutes or less with any horoscope.
This horoscope belongs to Marilyn Monroe. --Her father was a man with whom Marilyn’s mother had had an affair while married to someone else, and he deserted Marilyn’s mother when he learned she was pregnant. Later, when Marilyn tried to track him down, he ignored her completely.
Marilyn’s mother was institutionalized for mental problems, and Marilyn was raised in a succession of twelve foster homes(!). Marilyn wrote that she “play-acted” all the time in these foster relationships since she was so completely confused about values and so terribly lonely.
Marilyn was extraordinarily vulnerable to anyone giving her attention, offering her love, portraying her father, offering her mind the means to outgrow the chaos of her early years; “[Dreaming of] People looking at me made me feel less lonely.”. [Her Mars in Pisces suggests vulnerability as well; it is weak and inactive.] --For further analysis through the eyes of Marilyn’s psychoanalyst as wellplease see Tyl-Synthesis & Counseling in Astrology, pages 19-21, 480-482, and 602-614 especially.
Next month, we’ll follow the sub-text technique with another pattern of measurements! Try it yourself and bring your astrology more quickly and more vividly to life. |
