Understanding Midpoints
Part 4

The past few essays have laid the foundation of understanding midpoint theory and I hope the presentation has been helpful for your understanding. Application of the theory is the best teacher.
In my formative years of working with midpoints, I concentrated on the horoscopes of those that I knew very well, coupled with recognized personages whose lives were open for all to see and I would recommend that you follow the same path if you are in the learning process of midpoint theory.
Although it is possible to do an analysis of a horoscope using just the midpoint Sort, it is not advisable until you have become advanced with the technique. The basic horoscope is always the foundation for all analysis. The midpoint Sort usually confirms (adds depth to) what is seen in the horoscope or adds dimensions to the horoscope that cannot be seen.
Bill Maher January 20, 1956, 10:32 PM, New York, NY), opinionated political comedian, has the following midpoints in his Sort: MC=Mer/Mars;
Mer=Sun/Plu=Ura/Plu=Sun/Jup. These are repeating pictures that clearly suggest one with an ability to use the mind or "mouth" powerfully. Is this clear because we know in advance that it is Bill Maher or would it be just as clear if it was someone that you didn’t know, paying you for a consultation? Knowing a bit about the person helps to put into perspective what the astrology suggests but just the same, your analysis of the midpoint Sort should begin to give you solid hints and suggestions that add helpfully to your natal analysis.
Example

The first observation of this man's horoscope shows a decided lowerhemisphere emphasis. Right off the bat, you are aware that there is something about the formative years of development that swirls around in this man's adult psyche, haunting him like a proverbial ghost in a haunted house.
The ruler of this horoscope, Mars, trines the Sun-Venus conjunction and is quintile Pluto and the Midheaven. The last thing this man questions is who he is! The quintiles cue us in to accelerated dimensions of creativity at the man’s core.
With the Sun, Moon and three planets in Cancer, we know to expect a powerful need for emotional security that will be projected to others through an assertive, “me-first” kind of an image. We can creatively deduce that the need for emotional security was NOT fulfilled during the formative years of development and that this lies at the base of any issues carried forth from those years.
While the identity is intact, significator dynamics tell us that there are other concerns.. Saturn, ruler of X, squares the Moon, ruler of IV, corroborating the northern hemisphere emphasis in blinking neon lights. This control factor upon the need for emotional security manifests in difficulties cooperating with others on their terms (especially in the work environment) and has to be looked at in terms of health, as well.
Although the orb is just slightly wide, Saturn squares Uranus (legitimately so because of the Moon-Uranus conjunction), raising questions to the man about how loveable he is.
Saturn’s square to the Sun manifests in ambition and drive, and/or inhibition, even fear that may manifest in some control factor, some difficulty giving love, perhaps sexually. It also highlights the father’s absence, emotionally or physically. Venus rules II and VII, easily suggesting a self-worth profile that makes relationships difficult.
Neptune squares Mercury, suggesting idealism that may take the form of creativity if used positively and self-deception if used otherwise. Mercury’s rulership of III keys this idealistic dimension keenly into the man’s mindset and, again, may manifest in the man’s health profile and his ability to cooperate with others on their terms.
Saturn is quindecile the Ascendant, suggesting an over-projection of control, a fear-based rigidity that probably manifests in health concerns, makes the man sick.
The horoscope is lacking in Air, suggesting the man’s inability to see himself as others do or to see himself objectively. The low count in the Earth element highlights two possible options: he lacks practicality and inner stability or he goes around criticizing the world around him, dotting everyone else’s i’s and crossing their t’s.
Overall, this is a challenging horoscope and with so much tension funneled into the 3rd House, we must be aware of the potential for depression. The man’s mindset will make an important swirl within the need for emotional security. It will be related to the need for emotional security.

Look at the midpoint Sort. The first thing that you will always do is write down, on the horoscope, the positions surrounding the Aries Point. Here, we see AP=Jup/Plu=Venus. This is a projection of grand success and charm and/OR art. The Sun/Moon midpoint is not aspected by a planet.
What now? Look at every midpoint picture. Some will simply feel stronger and draw your attention because they corroborate the profile that we’ve built up so far. Key to this is: Pluto=Ven/Sat=Sun/Sat; Node=Moon/Sat (echoed by Mars=Moon/Node), which has the potential of being argumentative with others). The Sun/Saturn and Venus/Saturn midpoints suggest control factors, the Venus element making reference to relationships. Pluto amplifies this control factor to its highest potential dimension. This is difficult stuff! The Moon/Saturn midpoint is an emotionally frustrating influence that characterizes the man’s associations with others.
This theme continues with Saturn=Ven/Ura=Ven/MC=Sun/Ura=Sun/MC=
Mer/Ven=Sun/Mer. With Saturn’s squares to the Sun, Moon and Venus, the quindecile to the Ascendant, and the number of midpoints surrounding Saturn, we can see control dimensions strongly at work. Now, on a positive level, this manifests as tremendous efficiency and discipline. When used otherwise, this represents being over-controlled, insecure, even afraid, let alone rigid. This string of midpoints relates this control factor to the man’s sense of passion, and, again, to the overall mindset .
We can add MC=Sat/Nep (anguish) and Nep=Mars/Sat (also anguish) to the growing profile. These pictures echo one another. Why? Neptune takes Saturn’s structure and form and diffuses it. This diffusion of structure causes suffering that results in deep anguish. When this dimension is associated with the Midheaven, we see this anguish getting out into the world easily. In the other picture we see energy and control together. This creates a stalemate, manifesting in frustration. This dimension’s association with Neptune produces the same sense of anguish that we saw in the Sat/Nep midpoint.
There is more, for sure, but we have certainly seen enough here to get a general feeling for what’s going on.
The reality is that this is a very successful musician. He has been a part of over 5000 recordings with the absolute best there is in jazz, fusion, popular and R&B music. He gets consummate respect from his peers and has traveled the world over many, many times. He is admired by many for his above-average musicianship.
The man’s father died when this musician was seven years old. He immediately gained weight, finally developing a weight problem. His teen years were wonderful with the development of his growing musicianship but he was unable to easily cope with things socially, so much so that he dropped out of High School. His weight began to balloon, he attempted suicide, grew more inward, never having anything close to a fulfilling relationship.
The man had an unsuccessful marriage between the ages of 28-30, ending bitterly, angrily, and deceptively. Even now, as a 50+-year old man, this talented man has just found a secure but still unfulfilling relationship interest. He makes his home his castle, disallowing any intrusions from the outer world. New relationships become difficult to initiate. The Saturn function, the control factors weigh heavily on the self-worth, giving the man much tension about lovability. The man is in dire need of strong, emotionally oriented love security. Fulfillment continues to be elusive because he does not have enough confidence in himself to go after the kind of woman that he wants. Instead, he settles for whatever happens because the threat of rejection is less likely when someone else initiates the relationship.
You could certainly get the sense of all of this with just the traditional natal chart. But the addition of the midpoints gives everything more depth. It sharpens the profile.
