Aquarius New Moon:
And the Angels Appear!
By Dana Gerhardt
As the first new moon of the new year, the Aquarius New Moon is your annual opportunity to wake up to the fresh brilliance of your world. Aquarius is associated with lightening bolts and the rainy seasonnature’s cues for cleansing and awakening your spirit. Especially this cycle, as four months of frustrating retrogrades come to an end, and the harsh Grand Cross from November through January eases its pressure, the sign of the Water Bearer invites you to wash away your troubles and awaken to a brand new day.
When the Grand Cross marched into place last November, I got calls and emails from many of you wondering what would happen. Well now you know. Perhaps you were stymied in your efforts. Maybe you ran around in circles or were stretched beyond your comfort zone. Perhaps you wondered if you’d ever rise above it all. Some of my clients and friends have told harrowing and heartbreaking tales, while others have shared long narratives of little moments proving Murphy’s Law (if anything can go wrong, it will). When four planets oppose and square each other as they do in a Grand Cross, it’s like handling four-year-old quadruplets. Just as you’ve fed one, another has spilled juice on the rug, another has wandered who knows where, and the fourth is dropping plastic toys down the kitchen drain.
For me, one afternoon seemed to bring all the planets of the Grand CrossSaturn, Neptune, Mars, and Jupiterand their attendant frustrations---into a single event. It was a Neptune day, foggy and misty with soft intermittent rain. I was taking a much needed walk with my dog Jupiter. We’d gone about a mile, reached our turnaround spot, when suddenly a black pygmy goat (there’s Saturn) appeared. He bleated and began to follow us. Feeling compassionate for this little wanderer (there’s Neptune again), we toured the neighborhood, searching for the house and pen he’d escaped from. No success and it was getting late. Now Mars rose up and I got angry. I waved my arms and screamed “Go home!” I threw stones at the goat’s feet. I started to run. Jupiter ran with me. So did the little black goat, right on our heels. A couple times I stopped, wondering what to do. The pygmy then reared up and took a running dive at Jupiter, butting him squarely in the side! Jupiter is a big dog and not one to slink from a fight. But even for him this was so odd, that he just curled up and took it (much as my eager dreams and enthusiasms of the past few months had taken their hits from Saturn). We’d gone a mile now, almost home. Cars slowed as drivers smiled at the cute picture of a woman walking a goat and dog, while I wondered desperately what I’d do when I got home.
What happened next is the reason I’m telling you this story. Because it proves the universe is a benevolent place after all--and that troubles can vanish just as quickly and cleverly as they come. I turned the corner onto my street. There was a woman I’d never seen before, walking her dog. She laughed and said, “Oh I know where this goat belongs." She grabbed him by the collar and took him away with her. Clearly an angel had appeared! Safely home, I gave Jupiter a well-deserved cookie, and myself a cup of cocoa. All was well. And may this New Moon bring the same kind of haven for you. Honor those angels who appeared for you during the past few months. Appreciate those who are appearing now or waiting just around the corner. See them carrying away your troubles, for Aquarius is the month to begin again, which may be why the Chinese time their New Year’s celebration with this moontime. (My Jupiter will be happy to know that this is the Year of the Dog.)
Four days after the New Moon comes the pagan cross-quarter holiday, Candelmas (or Imbolc). Here’s the ritual moment for initiates to wash away their pasts and newly dedicate themselves to the Goddess. On the following day, Venus, planet of pleasure and desires goes direct, just as Mars, planet of action, passes the shadow degree of last October’s retrograde. This first waxing week of this cycle offers you a big chance to come clean. Send yourself a signal that you’re willing to embrace this fresh start. If your work has been uninspired, rearrange your office and throw out old papers. If family relationships are not as harmonious as you’d like, give your home a top-to-bottom cleaning. A simple ritual for this New Moon is to become your own Water-bearing Angel. Fill an atomizer or spray bottle with energetically charged water. Charge the water by placing a crystal in it for at least 24 hours (before that, clean the crystal by soaking it in a bowl of salt or under the sun’s rays). If you’re familiar with Dr. Masaru Emoto’s work, you know that writing positive intentions on the water bottle (“grace,” “abundance,” “passion,” or “peace”) will further charge the water molecules. Dip a sprig of pine in the water to double its energetic potency. Pine is purifying--it smells clean too! On the day of the New Moon, visit all the rooms in your house and mist them with your ritual water. You should notice the difference instantly! Enjoy the newly charged air. Wait happily for new inspirations to come pouring in.
Where should you focus now?
Look to the house of your birth chart where the New Moon falls. This is the fertile soil for your New Moon seed. It’s the place you usually “do Aquarius.” Every year at this time, you engage subtly or wholeheartedly in a purification ritual. A cleansing in this house can energize your whole year. This house is where you’re used to shaking up your status quoand during this New Moon cycle, you have a unique opportunity here… but you must tune in. Listen for the stray thoughts that get you really excited. It may be your inner revolutionary handing you the manifesto you need. (If you’d like to explore this more personally and deeply, you may enjoy my workshop-by-mail, Twelve Moons.)
