Bee Venom Therapy

by Lonny Brown, Ph.D.
Given that modern medicine consists largely of pills and surgery, it may seem like news that real healing can come from the sting of a honey bee. In fact, the curative properties of bee venom were known in ancient Greece as early as 400 B.C., and Hippocrates mentions it in his medical writings. It is recorded that King Charlemagne was cured of gout by bee stings in the first century, A.D., and the earliest Russian and German medical archives also have references to its use. A 19th-century Austrian doctor, Anton Terc, treated about 700 arthritis patients over 25 years, documenting many successes. In modern Europe, Russia& China, hundreds of medical studies involving thousands of patients have consistently proven the validity of bee sting therapy.

In the U.S., as recently as the 1930's, "bee spas," were popular with arthritis sufferers, and a New York physician, Dr. Bodog F. Beck, wrote a book entitled "Bee Venom Therapy." The method fell out of favor in this country when commercially produced "indictable venom" proved unreliable, and such arthritis treatments as gold salts and cortisone came into vogue.

After years of persecution and indifference from the governmental/medical establishment, Bee Venom Therapy (BVT or Apitherapy) is about to come into its own in America. This hard-earned acceptance is due in large measure to the lifelong dedication of the late Vermont bee keeper, Charlie Mraz.

With a half-century's worth of "miracle" stories - complete with discarded crutches and abandoned wheelchairs - he tells of curing ailments as diverse as bursitis, bone spurs, carpal tunnel syndrome, macular degeneration, warts, scleroderma, shingles, gangrene, ulcers, edema, migraine, menstrual pain, poor eyesight, and even infertility and depression. Mraz' work has inspired doctors and researchers to conduct serious investigations of apitherapy for Lyme disease, lupus, herpes, cardiovascular disease, leukemia, MS and AIDS. Mraz also speaks convincingly of the healing powers of bee pollen, honey, royal jelly, and honeycomb propalis.

How Does It Work?

It's quasi-legal status notwithstanding, bee venom is widely recognized in biomedicine as an effective immune system stimulant, a cell cleanser, and an anti-inflamatory agent which is 100 times more effective than hydrocortisone. It improves circulation, regulates abnormal heart activity, normalizes both high and low blood pressure, stimulates the hypothalamic?pituitary-adrenal gland system, and reduces pain. Studies at Walter Reed Army Hospital, New York University, and San Diego's Naval Oceans Systems Center have led to the discovery of substances in bee venom that have a cleansing effect on living cells. And recent Canadian research shows that the deterioration preventive substance "melittin" in bee venom inhibits the formation of toxic free-radicals in the synovial fluid that lubricates our joints.

How to Get Stung

The procedure for taking live bee sting therapy is simple enough, if somewhat daunting for first-timers. A bee is gently removed from the jar with a pair of tweezers, and placed on a "trigger point" near the afflicted joint. When agitated, the bee thrusts its stinger into the skin and leaves it there, along with a good portion of its own rear end. The disconnected probe wiggles in and squirts venom through its hollow point. The bee unfortunately will die for its one-time contribution to your health. Charlie Mraz recommends quickly ending the little donor's discomfort by crushing it.

Although a bee sting doesn't hurt any more than a hypodermic injection, ice is often applied beforehand to dull the pain. A temporary soreness or itching accompanied by swelling is the natural, healthy immune response to the micro-poison, and is taken as a good sign that the body is responding positively.

There are a few contra-indicators for apitherapy, but in the tens of thousands of known bee sting applications, not one has led to any serious harmful side-effects, or fatalities. Statistically, aspirin is riskier than bee venom.

The acute reaction to insect stings known as anaphylactic shock is itself a sign of a compromised immune system. Rare even with wasp and yellow-jacket stings, such toxic reaction is virtually undocumented with honey bees. Just to be extra safe, Charlie Mraz and all qualified apitherapists test patients for allergic reactions with a single sting before beginning full scale treatment, and always keep a commercially available bee sting antidote kit handy.

Courses of therapy have varied in duration from weeks to years, amounting to thousands of stings for chronic sufferers. Most of the time, their patience pays off. Although not all cures are quick and complete, success rates are consistently over 80% - remarkably high for any medical remedy.
