Herbal Coffee

by Kami McBride
When we think about wholesome eating, we also have to think about what we drink. Many people eat well and then sabotage their health with a constant coffee habit! Often we drink coffee to help warm up in the morning and keep moving. Coffee is definitely a blood mover and can keep you going even when you don’t really have the energy. The caffeine in coffee increases the rate at which the nerve synapses fire in your nervous system, making you feel like you have energy when you may actually be tired.

Coffee is stressing to the adrenals and causes the liver to work overtime. It can increase insomnia, fatigue, anxiety and nervousness. Research shows that long-term coffee use can lead to arthritis, bone loss and skeletal muscle tension. Coffee stimulates the release of stress hormones and inhibits calcium absorption. It contributes to fibrocystic breast disease, high blood pressure and imbalances in the gastrointestinal tract. Coffee can also inhibit the beneficial bacteria in your small intestine which can lead to nutritional deficiencies.

Coffee is a very high use pesticide crop, so if you are going to drink it, make sure it is organic. Shall I go on? The point is that coffee is hard on your body. A cup now and then is fine, but a daily addiction has an overall depleting effect on many body systems.

I have helped many people get off of coffee over the years and here are three great tasting tea substitutes to help you reduce your coffee intake. For many people there is a de-toxification period involving headaches and fatigue for a couple weeks. Once you get past that period, you will experience a difference in the quality of your daily energy without coffee. You may notice that all the coffee was covering up just how tired you really are. It is good to spend the time you need resting for awhile until you rebuild yourself instead of continuing to override your exhaustion with the stimulating effects of coffee. Even though coffee gives you short term energy, over the long run, it depletes important energy reserves and contributes to chronic disease.

Reducing coffee intake is especially important for women who are approaching menopause. Menopause is a time of transition that draws on energy from your adrenal glands. Coffee depletes adrenal energy and leaves you with less reserve for supporting the changes of menopause.

Roasted Dandelion Root Coffee

One tablespoon ground roasted dandelion root

One cup water

You can prepare this in a cowboy coffee style with one tablespoon of dandelion root to one cup of water. Bring to a boil; turn off the heat and let sit for a few minutes. You can also put the roasted dandelion root in a coffee filter and run it through your coffee maker the same way you would make regular coffee. Some people like to start out using half coffee and half dandelion root, to wean off of the caffeine. Adding a dash of cinnamon and nutmeg tastes great.

Roasted dandelion coffee is dark and thick and has a rich aroma. It is bitter like coffee and has a stimulating effect on digestion. It is supportive to the liver and gall bladder and is restorative to the digestive system. It contains lots of vitamins and minerals, helps to lower cholesterol and generally promotes health and well-being. Whereas coffee has more than ten alkaloids that your liver has to de-toxify, dandelion root aids the liver in its de-toxification duties.

Herbal Chai

Herbal chai is a wonderful morning substitute for coffee. It stimulates circulation and digestion and increases mental clarity.

6 cups water

One teaspoon cinnamon

One teaspoon coriander

Two teaspoons orange peel

Two teaspoons fennel seed

One half teaspoon cloves

One half teaspoon cardamom

One teaspoon black pepper

Put herbs and water into a pot, bring to a boil and then let sit for 1⁄2 hour. Strain out the herbs and re-heat the tea. Add honey or sugar and milk or soymilk to taste

Peppermint Ginger Tea

Many people find that this tea is a great afternoon pick-me-up tea instead of coffee.

Two cups of water

One tablespoon fresh or dried peppermint leaf

One tablespoon fresh or dried ginger root

Put herbs and water into a pot with a lid on. Bring to a boil and turn off the heat and let sit for fifteen minutes. Strain out the herbs, re-heat and enjoy.

Remember what you drink is as important as what you eat!
