Prayers for the Winter

Power Deck Card
of the Month:
Enduring

by Lynn Andrews

A yellow moon had risen over the hills in the distance. The sky was beautiful and immense and somewhere the coyotes were singing their mournful song.

I was sitting before an open fire with an old Indian woman. Her face was created like that of an apple doll. Her cheekbones were high, and her long braids fell well below her shoulders. She wore a beaded medicine wheel necklace over her green plaid Pendleton shirt.

"Your life is a path," she said, her thick accent at first difficult to understand. "Knowingly or unknowingly you have been on a vision quest. It is good to have a vision, a dream."

There was something compelling about her. Her personality seemed to change from moment to moment. Although she had difficulty expressing the simplest thoughts in English, she was as erudite as anyone I have ever known, and she had great dignity.

"Woman is the ultimate," she said. "Mother earth belongs to woman, not man. She carries the void."

These were her words to me before I became her apprentice. She is a heyoka medicine woman. I was destined to follow in her path.

Dear Friends,

Many years ago I was given an amazing gift. The year 2006 marks a very special milestone in my life, a very special year for the Sisterhood of the Shields and I hope for you, as well.

For the year 2006 marks the 25th anniversary of the original publication of my book MEDICINE WOMAN, the first of many books chronicling my spiritual pathway as a shaman, a healer and a teacher, the first of many books chronicling my studies with Agnes Whistling Elk, Ruby Plenty Chiefs and the other extraordinary, beautiful women of the Sisterhood of the Shields, of whom I have been incredibly proud and humbled to become a member.

And now, twenty-five years after the first publication of MEDICINE WOMAN, I have been gifted once again:

* Gifted with the wonderful opportunity of working and sharing my journeys and my vision with each and every one of you, my dear friends and apprentices.

* Gifted with the beautiful opportunity to share the 25th anniversary or MEDICINE WOMAN with you.

* Gifted with the very special opportunity of publishing my 19th book, WRITING SPIRIT, which is scheduled to be released in hardcover by Tarcher/Penguin Books on March 2, 2006. There is an excerpt from this book at the end of this letter, a book that I have dedicated to helping you find and inspire the creative genius that resides within each and every one of you.

As I write these words, I pause to blow the breath of spirit across my palms, sending to Great Spirit and all of the great beings of light in the Universe who watch over us with such love and sacredness my prayers for you and for the possibilities of our journeys together.

I hope you will join me, the Sisterhood of the Shields and everyone who is such a magnificent part of Lynn Andrews Productions and all of the work that we do together as we honor these last 25 years of MEDICINE WOMAN and celebrate the beginning of a new 25 years together, reaching ever outward and upward to honor and embrace the shaman woman and shaman man who stands within us all.

My very best wishes to you for a fabulous new year filled with many beautiful gifts of spirit and abundance.

In love and spirit,

Lynn Andrews

Imagine that you as a writer, you as a creative person, are a wise elder who is looking back on your life, reflecting on your legacy. If you were to write your legacy, what would you say? What would your story be? What would you like those who come after you to know of your experience?

In Windhorse Woman, I wrote of my work with the Sacred Book of the Child. This is a book that was seeded here, so I was told by the women of the Sisterhood of the Shields, in a remote valley in Tibet by the great beings from the stars in ancient times. We are made from stars, and to the stars we must one day return. The Sacred Book of the Child is an Akashic record of a kind, a sacred text that outlines your lifetime from the beginning to the end of time, your past and future lives, everything. You open the book of your history and everything that you are here to learn in your lifetime is there, what you are moving toward, what it is that you are trying to manifest along your path of heart and writing in the process of enlightenment. You can find it now.

Close your eyes and dream. There is a cave within the earth which you have visited many times, whether you realize this on a conscious level or not. Visit it now on a conscious level. Return to the cave within the earth where you first encountered the Sacred Book of the Child, even though you didn't know that was what it was at the time. Place your hands on its cover. Feel its leather binding, very old, ancient leather with gold lettering on it. Touch once again the Sacred Book of the Child. Trace the raised lettering with your fingers and open the book with great care and intent. As you open the book to a blank page, pick up the beautiful gold fountain pen that lies beside it.

When we write, we separate. Writing is a lonely pursuit, and as a result sometimes we see reality as compartmentalized when in truth there is a oneness between you and all people who are creators. Sadly we don't always have a chance to experience that oneness or to exchange ideas. Nature is what heals that feeling of separateness. Imagine now that you are a part of nature, you are a part of the oneness. You are a tree.

Imagine now that you are a great tree. You are a tree of dreams. Perhaps you are an ancient oak surrounded by your family of oaks and maples and all the great trees of the forest. Perhaps you are a great pine tree like a cedar, deeply rooted into the body of a steep mountain that overlooks a valley and a river flowing far below you. Visualize the kind of tree that you are. See yourself as this great tree, deeply rooted in the earth, solid and strong within your trunk with great branches like arms reaching up to the sky. Feel the wind in your branches, bringing voice and laughter to your leaves, your needles. Feel the air currents surrounding you and the sunlight pouring down from the heavens filling you with energy and power. Move your roots deep now into Mother Earth, feeling the coolness, the dark womb that nourishes you so well.

You are a tree of dreams and your act of power lives within the very fibers and cells and beingness of this tree that you are. Your act of power has a cycle that is similar to a great tree. Your act of power moves through the seasons of existence, the budding, the blooming, the falling of your leaves, the shedding and sharing of your manifestations with the world, and then you rest within the wintering of your dreams and realization.

You are a writer. Your act of power is the book or the story that you are creating. That is what is written for you in the Sacred Book of the Child. It is time now for you to bloom.

POWER DECK CARD FOR JANUARY

29 – ENDURING – North

Take a stone in your hand and meditate on it, or use the stone surface pictured on the card. Go into the stone. Experience her quiet soul. The stone welcomes your visit. Let her experience the inside of your heart. See how you are each an enduring mirror for the other. You are everywhere, mirroring everything. The stone absorbs you, and you absorb the stone. How can you be alone if you are part of everything? You are the totality of enduring existence. Therefore, nothing in existence can upset you.

Definition of the card

The painting is entitled Ancient Memories. The stones represent the material world, and the flowers represent your inner soul and spirit. The salamander represents transformation into higher being, through the vortex of energy created by the sacred spirals of life. Stones teach us patience and enduring courage. Stones are the great storytellers. They were here before any of us, and they know the laws of the land. They are the teachers of silence. If you can become like a stone, you will experience the stillness of the stones, and then the flower of your spirit will brighten into full bloom with patience and enduring grace.

Enduring is a north card, because it teaches strength and wisdom in the process of patience. It is with patience and endurance that we understand time and the uses of power. Without endurance and patience your timing is never correct and your power is lost.

Prayers for the Winter
Prayer to Ask for Help

Blessed beings of the lower world,
Come to me and show your sacred four directions.
Spirit beings who protect and empower me,
See my humbleness,
And hear the sound of my beating heart.
Sacred Mother and Father Sky,
Be with me now.

When I am alone and afraid,
I search the sky
For a sign from you, Great Spirit.
I place my hands on you,
Mother earth, and feel the beating
Of your abundant heart.
Then why do I feel this pain,
When your beauty is all around me?

Sometimes I cannot see,
And it is now that I seek pure vision.
Forgive me, Great Spirit, for my ignorance.
For you have shared the radiant
Miracle of life with me.
I feel the wind from the north,
And I remember Spirit.
I remember Trickster Coyote in the east
As he nips at my heels and tests my sacred intent.
Help me, Great Spirit, for I need you now.
I need to remember who I am
And see your reflection in the red sky at dawn.
I see ahead of me your footsteps in
The sands of time,
And I follow you with love
And a humble heart.

I pray for your guidance,
And I will listen now for your words inside of me,
Like the gentle wind.
Let there be silence.
Let there be peace in my soul
And in the souls of all living things. Ho!

The Universe Within

Everything comes from nothing. Our universe is magnificent in its manifestations of power, but when you go to the center, when you go to the beginning of things, you move, not out into the world for your instruction, but to the interior world, the universe that lives within. It is from the essence of that universe that all life is born.

Online Course Announcement:

The Magical Mysteries of Time – Past and Future Lives.

An Online Course with Lynn Andrews, July 28 – August 25, 2005

What is time that it has such power to change all that exists back into dust? What is this unseen force like the wind that can shape the land and our lives? Learn to play with time. Time is surreal, like fish swimming in treetops. A person of power knows how to arrange time. A person of power knows how to arrange time…. Your power depends upon your use of time (The Power Deck)

We are enrolling now for my upcoming Online Course, “The Magical Mysteries of Time – Past and Future Lives,” July 28 – August 25, 2005. This is a course about shifting time, shifting from being out of the body to being completely incarnate in this lifetime, being in the body, being in the moment completely and totally.

When you are not living in the now, you are living in stress. Stress is a huge issue today for all of us and a source of much dysfunction in all our relationships. If you can learn to shift your concept of time and your experience of time into the present moment, then it will be possible for you to travel the path toward healing and spiritual enlightenment in a deeply personal and powerful way, in the way of the shamans throughout the ages. You will be released from so many aspects of the discomfort and fear which we carry around in our lives, and you will find a great comfort in understanding yourself from a different perspective and dimension of time.

I invite you to join us on this wonderful journey into consciousness. Please visit my website at www.lynnandrews.com to register for this special Online Course.

A note from Lynn:

Winter is the time of introspection. If it is at all possible for you, I would urge you strongly to enroll in my upcoming Online Course, Rites of Passage, the Gateways of Feminine Power, beginning on January 30, 2005, which will explore these teachings in depth.

My books Woman At the Edge of Two Worlds and the Woman At the Edge of Two Worlds Workbook, and the tapes of the 1993 Joshua Tree event are currently not available, but we are in the process of bringing them out again so please keep checking with our Retail Store at www.lynnandrews.com.

Also, please be reminded that the new term for the Lynn Andrews Center for Sacred Arts and Training is enrolling now, to begin February 1, 2005; the Mystery School is about healing as we move into the sacred mystery of our shamanic being. Enrollment remains open until the end of March.
