Dialoguing with
the Inner Analyst

by Margaret Lewis
When you commit to open dialogue with your inner voice of intuition, you begin to shift and change and your mind will take notice of what is occurring in your energy field. Your mind may become uncomfortable with the way your intuition relates to the unknown and the mysterious in life. You may find that obstacles will crop up on your path – challenges are presented and reflections serve to grab the attention of your mind’s Inner Analyst. The Inner Analyst is an aspect of your observing self, which sorts out and makes sense of information that flows through your mind from all sources of cognitive stimuli.

Your Inner Analyst studies your every thought, feeling, and behavior. You hear its voice as endless commentary in your mind. Some aspects of its analysis may live in the shadows and hide from your awareness, preferring to whisper in your ear when you are busy with another task. This stream of commentary offers a clear reading of your sense of self in any given moment, which can be positive or negative, depending upon the context of the Inner Analyst’s assessment.

The human brain has evolved from its primitive reptilian brain stem to the feeling limbic brain to the higher centers of the right and left hemispheres of the neocortex. The left side of the brain is the aspect of the neocortex that verbalizes, rationalizes, thinks in linear progression and relates to the finite physical world. The left side of the neocortex serves to fuel the engine that drives the Inner Analyst. The right side of the neocortex contains symbology, imagery, and the insights of intuition, which harbor deep wisdom. The left brain wants to make sense of the world and seeks the guidance of the Inner Analyst, whereas the right brain is at home within the mystery of life and relies on inner knowing for guidance.

The Inner Analyst interprets, judges, or dismisses your intuitive insights as they cross from the right to the left side of the brain. It may react to its need for safety, issues of self-love and self worth, or it may concern itself with the neocortex’s struggle to understand intuition from the point of view of the rational and logical left brain. These issues may cause the Inner Analyst to create the thought process of doubt. Doubt prefers to contact you at times when you are weak and could easily give in to its persuasions, hoping to distract you from discerning its true source. When the voices of doubt descend upon you, you might suddenly begin to worry or feel full of fear. You may feel pressured and ill at ease, finding yourself irritable and upset.

Must we conquer and annihilate the voices of doubt? Will that free us from its persuasions? We cannot remove doubt from our lives; we must learn to make it our companion. Doubt has its positive attributes. It can lead us to rethink a situation and find a new and better solution. Caution can be a wise response, but in too large a dose, it can paralyze us. Learning to dialogue with the Inner Analyst’s doubt and testing its validity will unveil the shadow side of doubt and bring it into balance with its useful attributes.

An easy way to begin the dialogue with your Inner Analyst is to imagine a person who looks like what you envision as the persona of your Inner Analyst. Call this persona forth, seeing her in your mind’s eye and ask her to dialogue with you. What does your Inner Analyst look like? How is she dressed? Take in the details of your Inner Analyst so you can become very familiar with how she presents herself, the tone of her expression and her energetic imprint upon your mind.

Invite your Inner Analyst to join you in confidential dialogue. Explain to your Inner Analyst that you wish to speak your truth and ask for an honest commitment to speak only the truth to each other. Then begin your inner dialogue by sharing that you are aware of your Analyst’s doubt with regard to your intuition. Ask your Inner Analyst to explain to you why she says these things. Is she afraid and feels she must warn you of danger? Does she know where these statements come from? Does she feel that these statements are true? Has she ever stopped to think about how these statements make you feel? Listen and make a mental note of what is shared with you.

Imagine that you are holding an object that is very special to you in your hands. Visualize this object and hold it to your heart. Then offer it to your Inner Analyst and ask her to hold it to her heart. Then take the object from your Inner Analyst and place it between you. Tell your Inner Analyst that you would like to make a pact with her. First, when she doubts your intuition, ask her to do so with your full awareness, so you will not simply allow these thoughts and feelings to brush by you and then become buried in your subconscious. Second, when you hear these doubts, ask to be given the opportunity to counterbalance these statements with positive and constructive evaluations of your intuitive insights. It is very important that you stay aware of the Inner Analyst’s doubts so you can respond to the validity of these statements in the moment. You want to maintain a free flow of information where your Inner Analyst can recognize and stay open to accessing your intuitive experiences. Let her know that you appreciate her guidance and will listen to her. Reassure her that her analysis is helpful.

Just as important, ask her to be kind to you in her discourse. Let her know that you do not need harshness in order to learn, because you are willing to listen to her and learn whatever you need to know in the moment so you can be better equipped to apply your intuitions as they arise in your awareness. Ask her for an assurance that she will be your companion instead of your judge. Then formulate a statement of commitment to maintaining this alliance with your Inner Analyst.

It is also useful to practice creating affirming statements with regard to issues raised by your mind when assessing your intuition. For example, the reptilian brain is the primal, instinctual part of the brain. It is closest to the brain stem and is the oldest brain system. Taking in the sensory data of the world around you, the reptile within senses the environment by smell, touch, taste and hearing. Before you think, you sense. Before reacting, analyzing, or feeling, you perceive with your five senses. The reptilian brain defines your space and territory. Directing you toward and away from things, the reptilian brain has an automatic reflex which sorts out your energy by moving toward or recoiling from objects, people, or situations on instinct. Comfort for a reptile means sleeping on a rock warmed by the sun. The reptilian brain needs to know the boundaries of self and must have a strong sense of self. An example of an affirmation for the reptilian brain is, “I am safe and comfortable with my intuitive nature.”

The limbic brain refers to your feelings and relationships. Sensuality, moods, pleasure and pain, and the ability to be affected by other’s emotions are located in this brain center. The reptilian brain’s focus is safety in relationship to self, whereas the limbic brain’s focus is on self in relation to others. At the heart of the limbic system are feelings, emotions, and the drama of relationships. Whether we are madly in love, angry, or terrified, the limbic system responds with powerful emotions.

Consider your limbic brain’s issues of self-love and self worth. Do you love yourself enough to truly forge a relationship with your intuitive voice? Are you aware of the wishes of your heart? Here is an example of an affirming statement regarding the limbic brain’s relationship with intuition, “Listening to my intuition does not make me weird or a misfit. On the contrary, listening to my intuition helps me stay open to receive the gifts of spirit.”

Reflect upon your left brain’s fixation on rational and logical explanations for all that occurs in your life. Here is an example of an affirming statement regarding the left brain’s issues with intuition. “Left brain analysis brings deeper meaning, awareness and clarity to my right brain intuitions.” The left brain organizes this information and creates the opportunity for verbal communication enabling you to deepen the experience of intuitive insight.

There is an Awareness, which exists outside of the mind, beyond the realm of your Inner Analyst. Your intuitive nature is well acquainted with this awareness unknown to the brain and its mental processes, because it is not an idea or philosophy that the mind can grasp. It is intrinsic, emerging only from your unique spirit. Who navigates when these two worlds collide? This is the task of the awakening lion, the untamed original self, untarnished by society and the projections of the conditioned mind. The lion is the part of you that is free.

Awakening the lion can happen when you truly begin to observe and constructively evaluate the rhetoric of the Inner Analyst. You begin to see how the mind traps of inner analysis can reveal a narrow restrictive path where you may have chained your feet. The Inner Analyst can be a good guide, but at some point you must leave its warm nest and enter the dark forest alone. You steer your way through the shadowed forest path by relying on the knowledge shared by the Inner Analyst and you merge that learning with the direct experience of the developing inner Sage, the one who relies and depends upon your intuitive guidance. The inner Sage holds the golden keys to your destiny, which hover brightly like Venus rising above the evening’s horizon. Your spiritual path keeps you moving toward that brilliant star of Awareness.

When the left and right hemispheres of the brain meet while crossing the chasm, a bridge of trust can be built between the great divided self. Gratitude for the teachings and compassion for the imperfections of the Inner Analyst forges the structure of the bridge and the strength discovered in the awakening of the inner Sage’s lion are the nails that hold the bridge together. Softness thaws the edges of a frozen heart when the bridge constructs a stronghold among the mind’s disparate realms. The hardened crust of the mind yields to the opening heart as awareness lifts to the realm of higher consciousness. Self-reliance fashions a plump cushion of wisdom, driving the inner Sage’s engine as it roars with delight along railways defining the path of your intuitive nature. The balancing of the Inner Analyst’s control over your life brings a gift to the forefront of the mind’s perceptions. The gift is Presence of Self, lit from within, which emerges with the ripening of the mature spirit. The Inner Light of wisdom from within illumines you.

My upcoming online course, Kuan Yin, the Wayshower of Compassionate Intuition, delves deeply into the concepts outlined in this article. Each of my online courses focuses upon a direction on the wheel of life. At each direction on the wheel is a life stage and an attribute of our intuitive nature. The wheel is used as a model to illuminate the pathway leading to the intuitive voice. The wheel is a common symbol germane to many cultures around the world. The four directions are like the four points on a compass and each direction represents an aspect of the fundamental energies of the universe. Theoretically, any subject matter can be placed on a wheel and have its attributes described in the four directions. My book, Wisdom Walks in Circles, the Spiraling Journey of your Inner Voice, and my online courses, place the developmental stages of life, spanning from childhood to wise age around the wheel and describes the inherent gateways of intuition at each life stage. Each direction on the wheel holds a unique characteristic of the essence of the intuitive voice.

The Spiraling Journey of Kuan Yin moves from the South attributes of the intuitive child to the West, where we open the pathways to the resource and wealth of intuition held by the Inner Teen. Each online class stands on its own and you are welcome to join any course even though you may not have participated in a previous online course in the Wisdom Walks Series. You may begin your work around the wheel of intuition at any life stage and at any direction on the wheel. Previous courses will be offered again and personal seminar versions of each course will be made available for independent study.

So often in present day adult life, we lose touch with the part of our self that listens to the inner voice of wisdom. We disown the supposed 'rebellious teen' who questions our adult authority. And yet, it is this aspect of self whose impetuous nature provides the uncanny ability to zero in on insight that the adult mind may feel too burdened with responsibility to perceive.

The untamed teen has a quick wit and wild spirited core at the essence of her being and she holds many keys to the directives of your destiny. The aspect of your Inner Teen Self is a vital contributor to the holistic nature of your intuitive voice. She is the one who listens without judgment or distraction and with lightning speed, she uncovers the pearls of intuition's truth.
