Astrologer's Notes: Preparing for a Consultation

#1 Organizing Your Measurements Meaningfully

by Noel Tyl

In the study of synthesis techniques [see full presentation in Synthesis & Counseling in Astrology, pages 5-407], startlingly simplified ways of seeing the core need profile in life, the developmental challenges, and the fulfillment energies emerge. –These three consideration groups can lead you securely into the beginning of eloquent analysis for any horoscope!

First, we see the pervasive strength of the first impression focused through Hemisphere emphasis. For Stern it is to the North and to the West: some strong unfinished business in the early home and an over compensatory projection out to the public, to anyone who will listen and acknowledge him.

Second, there is the overlay of the Sun-Moon blend. Stern will need to show strong administrative energy within a solid structure, be part of a movement, an institution [others with the Sun-Moon Capricorn-Taurus blend: Conrad Hilton, Barry Goldwater, Simon Wiesenthal].

The Sun-Moon blend is modified by aspects to the Sun or Moon: the Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune contacts with the luminaries present a complicated picture, which can be quickly resolved as ambition (the injection of Saturn in Scorpio opposed the Moon) to be achieved by enormous individuation, focused through his professional achievements (the quindecile of Uranus to the Midheaven), with some strong suppression/camouflage devices enforced (the Neptune positioning) .

In other words, you know that Stern absorbed a lot of personal problems in his early home life and these are stoking the fires of individuation.

Third, I recommend that you put a little check mark at the cusp of every House whose ruler is under high developmental tension (including peregrination). This gives you at a glance the matrix of social behaviors evolving within the horoscope (see S&C, pages 225-268 especially). –For example, when the Ascendant ruler is under high developmental tension …or is retrograde (here, Mercury opposed by Uranus and squared by Neptune), there will be difficulties to be discussed in identity development. [Note how these points of observation which can be made in 2 or 3 seconds are all saying the same thing; we are just getting deeper and deeper into specifics as we prepare our presentation.]

Mercury also rules the 2nd: there is a strong, strong, highly nervous self-worth anxiety. And this relates to the 11th (under high developmental tension, through Neptune squared by Uranus, and itself squaring Mercury), showing the anxiety about being lovable.

The Sun and Uranus are the parental rulers, and their tension is duely seen. –So we have in surmise: unfinished business in the early home, causing identity development problems, high self-work anxiety, and a pervasive sense of not being lovable, being push into overcompensation through rebellious (Uranus communication) personal affirmation through the profession, working through a camouflage to demand recognition from the public at large. This is tremendous over compensation!

We see Jupiter peregrine (unaspected), ruling the 8th, part of the sexual profile (with the 5th). Mercury, under tension, rules the 5th. Together these indications of tension will require our investigation about how sexuality might be focused within the developmental mix! --and, of course, the wild-running Jupiter also rules the 7th, augmenting the enormous public thrust signaled by the western hemisphere emphasis.

The Mars-Saturn contact is always a “don’t you doubt me in the slightest …. I can do this!”

There’s more, of course, but this is how the measurements are assembled. They all relate, answering the question “Why would this be so?”

Indeed, ALL of Stern’s Houses are under high tension, but that is not bewildering when we understand developmental and socialization behavior patterns. We just take them singly and relate them with creative observational connections. –For example, it is obvious that someone with self-worth anxiety (a tense reference to the 2nd House) may very well feel unlovable (a tense reference to the 11th House), and this can relate to 7th House concerns, i.e., adult relationship or relationships to others in general are undercut because of these inner insecurities and the behavioral patterns that are put together to try to save the situation.

And always we must feel the specifically labeled energy of the Sun flowing into the Moon in its Sign, focusing the reigning need of the personality. Here it is administrative, driving energy to get things done, given an organization mission to set the record straight. For Stern this is pushed into fulfillment through rebellion, through rebellious communications (the Uranus position of dominance, quindecile the Midheaven) to demand that others (Jupiter peregrine ruling the 7th) see him as valuable, important, persuasive, unique … and residually lovable!

This is the analyst at work, thinking like this. You can do it easily if you push yourself beyond the static, anchoring thoughts of this-means-that. See things in a dynamism, trusting the guidelines of developmental tension among the planets, which are symbols of our needs and behavioral faculties.

When this first step is accomplished –and here with Stern’s horoscope, what we’ve covered can be accomplished in under two minutes with confidence and experience)—we can start to ferret out special brushstrokes that reveal even further nuance. For example, anytime we see Venus in Capricorn or Virgo, we can expect a slowed down, held back emotional maturation process. In Taurus, the slow-down is usually conditioned by idealism. Stern’s Venus in Capricorn is in conjunction with Mercury (and idealization of what he would call love-fulfilled, probably in sexual terms since Mercury rules the 5th [He has proclaimed to the world his perfect faithfulness to his wife for 21 years, in spite of his professional tidal wave of sexual exploitation … and they are now divorced.]

We can see Uranus, the ruler of his Midheaven at the midpoint of Jupiter/Pluto, which is a tremendous focus on “making a fortune,” which in turn is a symbolic overkill push to achieve acceptance at highest value with the world of others, with the public.

We can see five quintile measurements suggesting great innovation skill and creativity. [Anytime you have over three quintiles in a horoscope, no matter where they are or how they are formed, we must ask about the person’s creative outlet. Was it promoted early on? Did it endure? Or was it pushed under the table, suppressing so much about the Self, etc.]

These three guidelines: Hemisphere emphasis and the first impression (also see NoelTyl.com, “Analytical Techniques”, Archives at end of the current essay, click on “July 15, 1999”), the Sun-Moon overlay (see all 144 possible blends in S&C, pages 65-102, and then the designation of key House considerations through aspect tension with specific House rulers!

It’s not hard to open the door confidently to our miracle called Astrology!
