The Lunation Cycles
|
|
|

Everything in our universe works through a cyclical ebb and flow. Like the seasons, there is a beginning, transition, peak, and then the cycle turns back towards a new beginning. It is the way of nature. It is the way of life. It is the way of the universe.
One of the most helpful things for an astrologer to know is where a person stands within their personal journey to fulfillment. Quite often, when this information is passed on to clients, it helps to broaden their perspectives. In today’s society, where people expect to become successful in minutes, there is often a keen sense of impatience about life. When you can present a picture to your client that explains and shows them a cycle and where they are on it, it helps them to organize their lives in a more orderly fashion rather than having the expectation that everything happens yesterday.
It is also very helpful for the astrologer to know where a person stands within their life cycle as it places predictive measurements in perspective. The astrological technique that allows us to see all of this is called, “The Lunation Cycle.”
Defining the Cycle
The Lunation Cycle (LC from this point on) is based upon the aspect relationship made by the Secondary Progressed Moon to the Secondary Progressed Sun. The aspect relationship between the two has very distinct points that are based on the Moon’s Phases and we correlate the important points in the cycle to points of development in the human life cycle.
Astrology recognizes complete human life cycles in terms of patterns that last approximately 28 years, which is the length of time it takes for the SP Moon and SP Sun to make a complete aspect tour through the zodiac. However, the beginning of the cycle does not occur at birth unless one was born with the Sun and Moon in conjunction. It is almost always the case that a person begins the cycle at some point after birth, based upon the relationship between the natal Sun and Moon.
Basically speaking, the LC is defined by squares and oppositions. The two crucial points in the LC occur when the SP Moon and SP Sun are in conjunction and opposition. The New Moon part of one’s life cycle occurs when the SP Moon and SP Sun are in conjunction (please understand that this is not the same thing as the SP Moon’s conjunction to the natal Sun). It symbolizes a period of approximately 1 to 3 years when new seeds are planted in life. These seeds lay the foundation for the development of the entire cycle.
The opposition point of the cycle, when the SP Moon and SP Sun are in opposition, is the Full Moon part of the cycle. Occurring 14 years after the New Moon, it is a time when all that one can be comes to pass, for better or for worst. It can be a time of great development and recognition, or a time when one recognizes that one’s path needs to be changed because it just isn’t going to work. The spotlight shines upon you bringing into view all that there is to see. The symbolic seeds of life planted at the New Moon have become a fully grown tree at the point of the New Moon. Growth has been maximized.
The points of transition in the cycle are when the SP Moon and SP Sun are square. The first time this occurs is called The First Quarter. Occurring 7 years after the New Moon, it is a time when one has grown accustomed to the new seeds and things begin to happen that tend to help define what the overall cycle is about. One becomes committed to one direction or the other. It is usually a time of decisive action in terms of what was started during the New Moon period.
Seven years after the Full Moon comes the Last Quarter. If you can see the New Moon as a time of planting new seeds that develop into a tree 14 years later, the Last Quarter is a time when the leaves begin to fall off of the tree, in terms of what takes place in one’s life. The tree is beginning to die to make way for new growth and this is typically what begins to happen during this time in one’s life. People, places, and things in one’s life begin to undergo alteration. Interests begin to gradually change. It is the beginning of preparation time for the new seeds that will be planted in 7 years when the next New Moon phase occurs.
There are intermediate points in between these four main points of the LC. The Crescent phase is the intermediate point between the New Moon and First Quarter (SP Moon and SP Sun are 45 degrees apart). Occurring approximately 3 1⁄2 years after the New Moon, it usually signals a time when the pattern established at the New Moon becomes more clear with opportunities for advancement along the lines that were established in the New Moon.
Halfway between the Last Quarter and Full Moon is the Gibbous phase. The SP Moon and SP Sun are now in a sesquiquadrate relationship (135 degrees) Heading into the Full Moon, things are becoming even more intense at this point.
The Disseminating phase takes place 3 1⁄2 years after the Full Moon. It is kind of a showing off time of what took place at the Full Moon while things begin to very subtly and gradually begin to change in preparation for more decisive changing at the Last Quarter.
The final phase before the New Moon is the Balsamic phase. It represents a time of emptying out the old for the new. Things begin to happen that setup what takes place during the New Moon phase.
Practical Usage of the Lunation Cycle
For starters, when you are printing out predictive measurements, I hope that you are doing it so that all measurements print out chronologically, regardless of the kind of measurement. Set your software to include the relationship between the SP Moon and SP Sun in the hard aspect set. The trines and sextiles in the cycle do not correlate with dynamic points within the cycle. All phases discussed above are separated by 45 degrees. Soft aspects play no role in development.
Understand that the LC is often subtle. The dynamic points of the cycle are not intended to be times in life when major changes occur like clockwork. Their manifestation covers too long a period of time to be event specific. Instead, it is important for you as the astrological analyst to understand that how the occurrence of a specific event or series of events in one’s life contributes to that person’s place within their overall cycle. The cycle represents the life cycle of growth and development from a beginning to an end in an individual’s life.
The transit of Jupiter to the Sun that occurs at the SP New or Full Moon is going to represent a much more powerful life-shaping event than when the conjunction takes place when the SP New or Full Moon relationship does not occur within one of the dynamic compass points of the cycle.
In essence, through the LC, see each life as one that has already planted seeds and is building towards fulfillment or one that is working towards a new beginning.
On paper, imagine that the New Moon is at the 12:00 position. The First Quarter Moon, then, would be at the 9:00 position; the Full Moon would be at the 6:00 position and the Last Quarter would be at the 3:00 position. The cycle moves counter-clockwise. When you have computed the four primary phases for an individual, place the year of the phase of the cycle where the phase is. In this way, you have a graphic display of the ebb and flow of a person’s life.
Example
Bill Clinton
Former President Clinton was born August 19, 1946 at 8:51 AM in Hope, Arkansas. He graduated from Georgetown University and in 1968 won a Rhodes Scholarship to Oxford University. This was during his Full Moon cycle, a time of full illumination that led a law degree from Yale University in 1973. It was at this time that he entered politics in Arkansas.
Clinton’s Last Quarter was in 1976. It was just before this time that he married Hillary. This is when his life began to make decided changes. He was elected Arkansas Attorney General in 1976 and won the governorship in 1978.
The period leading up to his New Moon, from 1980 through 1982, is when he suffered defeat after defeat, The consistent losses forced him to re-evaluate himself and his career. Many things went through his mind during this period of defeat and these introspective thoughts planted seeds within him that led to a reorganization of his thinking and way of doing things. The changes worked and he became Governor again. Through defeat, he had learned important lessons that formed the foundation for his new cycle.
Clinton’s First Quarter was in 1991. Having been very successful in Arkansas, he decided to run for President. This is a classic example of the relationship between New Moon thinking and First Quarter activity. If we see the New Moon as the planting of new seeds, the First Quarter is that time when those seeds have produced a plant that is above ground. Things are on the move now. Clinton became President in 1992 and again in 1996. The entire period between the Last Quarter and Full Moon was one of victory and success.
The Clinton Full Moon was in 1998. He had come full circle from the period that led to his entrance into law school. It was the time of the Monica Lewinsky scandal. He was in full illumination for everyone to see. A cycle had completed itself.
Michael Jackson
Michael was born in Gary, Indiana, on August 29, 1958 at 11:53 PM CST. Michael was born close to a Full Moon so his life’s changes are going to resonate closely (but not exactly) to multiples of age 7.
The Jackson 5 was signed by Motown records in 1969. This was the 2 1⁄2 year period leading up to Michael’s New Moon, setting things up. The Balsamic phase is usually a time in anyone’s cycle when all that was the previous cycle begins to empty out and make way for what will be. In Michael’s case, hit records and success were setting him up for a change of mindset that would define the first half of his cycle.
By the time Michael’s New Moon had come around, the Jackson 5 were household names all over the world. They were catapulted by the hits, “I Want You Back;” “ABC;” “The Love You Save;” “I’ll Be There;” and “Mama’s Pearl.” The Jackson 5 had become the darlings of “kid Pop.” These very big sellers were followed by a string of kiddie-bubblegum songs and it seemed that Motown was set on keeping the group in that mold for as long as they could. Michael began to grow tired of taking orders from their record label, Motown. He grew tired of the direction of the music and thought that the family should have more input into the direction the music was taking. All of this led to the Jackson 5’s departure from Motown Records to sign with CBS Records in 1976. The important thing here is that seeds of having control were planted in Michael’s mind during his New Moon period and that desire would come to characterize the next 14 years after his New Moon.
Michael would go on to begin his solo career in 1979 with the release of the album, “Off The Wall.” This was exactly when his First Quarter began! The seeds planted during his New Moon began to gain sharp momentum. It was just prior to this that he co-starred in, “The Wiz.” And it was his participation in this movie that led to one of the most profitable partnerships in music history with Quincy Jones. Off The Wall was the first album in the history of music to have four top-10 hits.
Michael released, “Thriller,” in 1982, still the biggest selling album in history. It was in 1983 during a showing of Motown 25 when Michael first demonstrated the dance, “The Moonwalk.” His appearance on that show sealed his reputation as, “The King of Pop.” Michael was as big a star as could be.
Jackson’s Full Moon was in 1987, the year that the album, “Bad,” was released. This album spawned a record 7 top-10 hits and sold 30 million copies. After Thriller and Bad, there really was nowhere to go but down as that kind of success is extremely difficult to replicate consistently. Key to this period in time was the breakup of the partnership with Quincy Jones. That was the beginning of the musical end.
Michael’s Last Quarter started in 1995. Just two years prior to this is when the first accusations of child molestation took place. There was an out of court settlement in 1994 that began to put a stain on Michael’s image. All of this is what ushered in his Last Quarter, which is a time in the cycle when “the leaves come off the tree.”
Please see that the period from his First New Moon to the Full Moon built from those seeds of wanting control through massive, massive success through and including the Full Moon. Then just after the Disseminating phase, the tone of life changed with the problems involving children. This is stereotypical LC stuff! It is as clear as a bell!
Michael’s next New Moon was in 2002. He had received a BAMBI Award in Berlin, Germany. Fans found out which hotel Michael was staying at and formed a mob outside of his hotel room balcony on the street. These fans were calling out that they wanted to see Michael’s baby so in acknowledgement of their call, he briefly placed his child over the railing of the balcony. These actions were considered as child endangerment by some and led to an investigation into Michael’s children to see if they were “safe.” This was an important seed planted, not directly by Michael but by attorney Gloria Allred, who felt that Michael was a danger to his own children.
In 2003, Michael did the now infamous Martin Bashir interview that eventually led to his big criminal trial that resulted in his acquittal in June, 2005.
This has been a New Moon that has been characterized by scandal, trouble, and challenges. Jackson’s First Quarter is in 2009. It will be interesting to see what direction his life takes after the seed planting of his New Moon.
Using the Lunation Cycle
Please notice that there was no mention of an aspect through the summaries of the lives of Bill Clinton and Michael Jackson. What we are talking about with the LC is the flow and development of one’s life, not specific events. The LC cannot suggest specific events ahead of time in one’s life. We use it to see where a person is at within their cycle. The specific events that occur in one’s life are seen through the predictive techniques that we have in astrology. They are the trees. The LC is the forrest. All of the events that occur help to define the cycle that is outlined by the LC.
The Lunation Cycle is the clearest way to determine the ebb and flow of an individual’s life and I hope that you will use it to assist you with your predictive overview when talking to a client.
