The Situational Specificity of Psychological States
|

In last month's column, we explored how individual development unfolds in a manner characterized by specific planet-sign-house combinations. Not only are the psychological capacities inherent in house circumstances developed when planets tenant that house, but houses also provide a vehicle and catalyst for development of the signs/planets that occupy them.
Planets not only symbolize psychological functions that evolve through the circumstances of the houses they tenant, they also symbolize specific attitudes, moods, and feelings that will be most noticeable in those houses. The affects that characterize a planet generally derive from underlying beliefs that reflect the degree to which that planet is functional or dysfunctional. These beliefs will be oriented around the target states that the planet strives to attain, e.g., does a person believe s/he is capable of success (Saturn), of intimacy (Venus), or of belonging (Moon)? If the planet is fully functional, its corresponding beliefs will be constructive and will produce positive attitudes, moods, and feeling states. If the planet is not well integrated, however, then the resultant beliefs will produce dysfunctional behaviors and negative states in the houses those planets occupy.
Just as a behavioral pattern can be situationally specific, so psychological states can be triggered by specific situations. Because a house represents a specific kind of situation, planets in houses suggest that affect states are situational as much as they are characterological. With the exception of the Sun, Moon, and Ascendant, which tend to be fairly dominant features of a personality, the personality traits that accrue to various planets are more or less situationally specific.
For example, if Saturn squares the Moon and has several other difficult aspects, this could suggest a challenge involving Saturn, a fear of failure or of inadequacy. Where and how this fear manifests will be fairly consistent over the range of activities that characterize its house position. An unintegrated Saturn in the 5th may result in creative paralysis or a “creative block.” If Saturn in the 5th suggests there are emotional blockages to overcome in regard to creativ°©ity, what of romance? How would this person feel at a party? What kind of attitude might he have toward competitive sports? Saturn would describe all these 5th house experiences.
Romance, for instance, may be experienced as difficult and frightening. Seeing a girl to whom he is attracted may cause a boy to be immediately plagued with doubts concerning his own worth. Swallowing his fear, he approaches her anyway, yet he feels tight, nervous, inhibited. The girl, sensing he is uncomfortable, feels uncomfortable in return and thus rejects him. After numerous such experiences, he is reluctant to keep trying; his suspicion that he is not good enough is confirmed. If Saturn is projected, just the opposite may occur: no one is good enough for him. Wanting to have the perfect romance, he is frustrated when no one seems to measure up. This boy may price himself out of the market. In either event, the result is the same: no romance.
At parties, the same process takes over. Needing to be perfectly popular, yet falling short of his own high standards, he may relentlessly find fault with him°©self. Because of his insecurity, others shun him, thus confirming once again what he already fears: that he is drab, boring and a dull individual. If this process continues, he may eventually avoid parties altogether. Socially he might feel lonely as a consequence of not allowing himself to engage in activities that are recreational and “fun.” When it comes to sports, this individual could feel pressured to be the best. If he has any talent, he would probably hone it to perfection through long hours of disciplined practice. However, if he is only average, he may be so overwhelmed by what seems to him to be inexcusable failure, that he gives up sports in the same manner that he avoids parties and romance. In all of these activities, the general mood is one of pressure, negativity, pessimism, and despair.
All of the above suggests there are a variety of possible outcomes for a given planetary position, and no one outcome is exclusive of any other. Outcomes are a flow, a constantly transitioning and evolving process that proceeds from more simple, less satisfying outcomes to more complex, gratifying ones over time. Saturn in the 5th may initially be experienced as performance anxiety, yet it could gradually evolve into a masterful, authoritative performance that succeeds precisely because it is practiced and perfected. Even if difficult aspects stress a planet, astrologers should never conclude that only negative outcomes are possible. It is precisely the challenges we face that propel us to develop high functionality in those areas symbolized by the planet-sign-house combination.
When delineating planetary states in the context of a specific house, one must determine how these states logically relate to the affairs associated with the house the planet occupies. For example, if the Sun is in the 3rd house and the Sun’s target state is one of “pride,” how might pride be related to the 3rd house? Perhaps the individual feels a sense of pride in relation to what s/he knows? Conversely, a poorly integrated Sun in the 3rd could experience shame for being uneducated or uninformed. Mars in the 8th house might feel angry and aggressive in matters pertaining to sexuality, shared finances, taxation, investments, and in situations requiring a sensitive attunement to where others are vulnerable. Jupiter in the 12th house might feel optimistic that the larger system (God, the church, the legal system) will care for victims of poverty, illness, oppression, or discrimination. Saturn in the 7th house might feel pessimistic about whether contractual agreements will be honored or whether one’s partner will be fair.
In short, each planet is going to achieve a state of mind within the context of the house it tenants. Whether those states will be positive or negative is determined by the planet's level of integration. While astrologers can hypothesize about a planet's level of functionality on the basis of its aspects and sign position, one can never know with certainly until one actually talks to the person.
