Dear Caroline,
I have recently been diagnosed with Type II - adult onset diabetes. What a shock!
I realize that my diet and bad habits have finally caught up with me and I have created this situation, but now, how am I going to get healthy again?

Dear Sydney,
Fortunately type II diabetes is not the end of the world. The body “knows” and you will get through it. All too often I see Central Nervous System (CNS) types of people (people who are fair haired and light skinned) and Digestive Lymphatic Hormonal types (DLH) who may be of African, Asian, Latino or Eastern European descent, who overload their pancreas with lots of sugar and junk food not realizing that this little gland that is responsible for blood sugar regulation is going to have to last them for a lifetime.
By now, you are probably one some sort of glucose balancing medication from your doctor. This is a good thing but there are several strategies which you can implement and who knows, perhaps in time, your medication may be reduced.
Your pancreas has been stressed, overworked and overloaded for many years. Let’s take a look at the diet. I suggest that you eliminate all sugars, even fruit juice from the diet for 3 weeks. This is a short experimental period of time will show you the powerful healing capacity of the body. As soon as you see that this plan is working, you will realize the need for a complete lifestyle change.
Use minimal fruit and be sure that there is some protein in the mix (a handful of nuts) soon after fruit consumption. Take a look at your starch intake breads, pasta and grains. Starch converts quickly to sugar in the bloodstream. Why even a “healthy” bowl of granola quickly converts to sugar and can play havoc with delicate blood sugar levels. Reduce starch consumption and use “complex” starches (carbohydrates) like brown rice or whole grain pasta which take longer to convert to sugar in the system. Have a boiled egg, turkey sausage and some saute’d vegetables. You will find that by having protein at breakfast, you will have more stamina and better blood sugar regulation for the rest of the day.
My mother always made sure we started out with a hearty breakfast. I am constantly concerned about the numbers of people who start the day with coffee (also hard on the pancreas) a glass of juice and a piece of toast and not one speck of protein. I suggest you take a look at a book “Protein Power” by Mary Dan and Michael Eades two medical doctors in Boulder Colorado who have been very successful in helping people to rebalance blood sugar levels, reduce cholesterol and high blood pressure - purely by diet.
Now let’s look at the metaphysical or causal side of adult onset diabetes. Interesting that this is “adult” onset there has been no adult present! The adult side of you, who should be looking out for you, taking care of you and attending to your physical body’s needs has been absent. The child part of you that has given in to addictions and sugary temptations has been leading the show. Adult onset diabetes out of control desires for sweets and sweetness from life, can reflect a strong inner child.
Now, why not turn the strong inner child toward creativity in your life focus on your goals and dreams. What is the mark that you would like to leave on the planet? As soon as we feel happy and fulfilled in our soul’s purpose, we have no need to placate ourselves with food and overeating. You will get there. Like the rest of us, you will realize that discipline around food and our health is an important step in personal self-mastery.
