I was a fairly precocious child early in my life with a very precocious sense of intellectual curiosity that was pretty urgent. That is probably why my oldest brother thought it would be okay to introduce astrology to me at the age of thirteen.
The early interest in astrology led to other studies in eastern philosophies (especially Taoist thought), parapsychology, and Theosophy. The concept of focusing on universal laws and truths as opposed to the man-made philosophies organized through religion just felt better to me than did organized religion. I came from a family where sending you to Sunday school and church was supposed to be the answer to everything about life but I always felt that something was missing.
The process of learning, searching, and discovery in parapsychology accelerated greatly for me in the mid-eighties with the transit of Pluto went over my (9th House) Saturn. I had my first ever regression therapy session and was able to really identify strongly with the things that I had studied in Edgar Cayce texts as well as in Taoist thought.
Chief among these thoughts was the idea that the soul enters several bodies through different lifetimes in order to learn lessons for its evolvement and to eventually find its way back to the Godforce. To many, such an idea is blasphemous and even ridiculous, but not to me. The idea of living based on karma, based on balance appealed greatly. My mantra became, “the scales [of life] always balance.” I believed that your actions and thoughts are what create your reality in life. This line of thinking became central to the perspective in which I would use and see astrology.
Early on in my studies, when astrology texts were so badly oriented towards fate, hard aspects in a birth chart or in any predictive technique were seen as some kind of curse. In other words, if a relationship broke up as Saturn arced or transited to square Venus, it was Saturn that did it. That was the thinking but that isn’t the way it works! It is an excuse. All Saturn did was magically symbolize a tine in life when the relationship would be challenged. What counts is the things that led up to the period that ended the relationship, not Saturn. Saturn did not make a person repeatedly cheat and lie on their wife or husband. Saturn doesn’t make people all of a sudden realize that they see life so differently that it is impossible to remain together any longer. But instead of taking responsibility for these events, those early astrology books suggested that the transit is responsible.
In many ways and for many reasons that are not always obvious, we get what we deserve through what we think, do, and say.
Applying it to Synastry
In this line of karmic thinking and in all of my theosophical studies, I really wondered how all of this applied to relationships and how if it could be seen astrologically. After all, if what I think, do, and say forms the foundation for my reality, what could it mean if I mistreated someone from lives ago? I read many books and articles on the subject and all roads led to the Nodal Axis as being symbolic of that which relates to karma in many ways that are important to synastric analysis.
Noel Tyl wrote a very popular essay titled, “Getting to Node You.” That essay, for me, was the period on the end of a sentence of lots of study regarding the role of karma in relationships, astrologically speaking. For years, my work in synastry would always start with a look at both horoscopes together to see if the planets or Angles in one horoscope made a close conjunction or square (3 degree orb) to the Nodal Axis (North Node) of the other horoscope. If I saw this, no matter what else I saw or did not see, I tended to pronounce the relationship as one of great potential that was likely to last a very long time simply because of the implication that the two people had known each other before. While there can be no question that these measurements in synastry represent great relationship ties and potentials between two people who are interested in each other, there is more to consider than just the idea that two souls have known each other before. That, in and of itself, means nothing more than recognition.
The new awareness of what all this means did not occur to me until I first examined the personal, business and friendship relations in my life. I found that those whom I shared Nodal Axis contacts with and were in my life in meaningful ways never failed to leave some lasting imprint. The number of major disappointments was on par with the level of fulfillment in these relationships but, without questions, there had been major, major disappointments of a meaningful nature. So then I started doing research and found that the observations about all this that I found in my life were also very prevalent in the relationship lives of those whom I researched.
Seen spiritually, the aforementioned Nodal Axis ties suggest that the couple involved (this is even the case with friendships, family members, etc.) have some very important lessons to teach other based on a combination of former experiences with each other and based upon the fact that this is the person whom you have decided is the best person to teach you these lessons (subconsciously). If you are comfortable with the idea of past lives, these lessons are hypothetically a result of experiences from a former time in which there is unfinished business between two people. The scales did not balance then. Karma was created and the souls have found each other again in this life in order to balance things out and learn lessons that can only be learned from each other. So strong are the lessons learned from these relationships that they impact your life even when you are no longer with that person. Quite often, the lessons learned come through difficult, troubling circumstances within the relationship. While these issues can and do also exist in synastric relationships that do not have a Nodal tie, there is much greater impact when there is a Nodal contact, especially when it is mutual. In almost every case, whether it is mutual or not, there is a great deal of learning about oneself that takes place, frequently along the lines suggested by analysis of one’s horoscope.
Can any of this be proven? The past life part of the equation surely cannot be proven. But what can be proven is the quality of relationship that two people have who do have these Nodal Axis contacts. Whether you “believe in” past lives or not, The fact remains that there is something potentially very deep in an impacting way about relationships that have this tie.
Examples
There is nothing more that I can say about what took place between Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt than you’ve already read, seen, or heard. One can only imagine how difficult things were for Aniston through the first realizations that the relationship was ending and then to find out why it was ending, not to mention how it was all played out very publicly and that it centered upon the very lovely Angelina Jolie.
Jennifer Aniston’s birth data is 2/11/69 at 10:22 PM PST in Los Angeles. Brad Pitt’s birth data is December 18, 1963 at 6:31 AM CST in Shawnee, Oklahoma. In the bi-wheel shown here, you can see that her Venus is just square to his Nodal Axis; his Venus squares her Ascendant and there is the very strong, classic Sun-Moon conjunction between them. Quite importantly, his Saturn conjoins her Sun, always a sign that one person is teaching another something significant OR feels a tremendous sense of restriction. There is an exact tie of Pitt’s Jupiter to Aniston’s Venus. These are formidable ties, the kind that we typically find in synastric analysis.
Aniston’s horoscope suggests that she has a stronger than average libido. I think that these two were drawn to each other quite strongly because of a great mutual attraction, sexually speaking as opposed to actually having similar life philosophies. Pitt’s horoscope has a great suggestion of defensiveness and self-protection. Aniston’s horoscope suggests that she is more open about herself and I believe that her “Pitt lesson” has been more about really getting to know her guy and leaving the obfuscation of sexuality behind (Neptune conjoins Mars, ruler of VII in her horoscope, thus the tendency to not see clearly when it comes to relationships. Libido strength is shown as follows: Uranus is ruler of V, in and of itself an indication of sexual prowess…..it is conjoined by Jupiter and both oppose Venus, ruler of VIII).
The point here is that through Brad Pitt, Aniston’s life was impacted in a way that will carry his imprint forever in one way or the other. This kind of impact that is an example of the general flavor of the kind of impact that can take place in Nodal contacts between horoscopes.
A much more obvious example of all this can be seen with Bill and Hillary Clinton. His Sun squares her Nodal Axis According to their horoscopes, he is everything that she cannot be easily and she needs him to help her. But in the process, she clearly has suffered a great deal.
Private Example

This is the horoscope of a man that I have known for all but two years of my life. The basic issue of his life has always been that he is very weak when it comes to the opposite sex. He is quite vulnerable to sexual and romantic advances. The horoscope shows a square between Pluto and Venus. Pluto’s effect on the planet it makes contact with is that it takes it to extremes. This has certainly been the case in this man’s life. He became a father just out of high school and today, through two marriages, and two other relationships, he has something like 13 children.
“Joe” came to me when he met the woman who was to become his second wife. He wanted me to give him an overview of her horoscope. I told him that I would do so but only with her in a face to face consultation.
In that consultation, I said these words. “Joe, she requires a lot of attention. Based on what I know of you in real life and what I have learned about your Lady from her and from her horoscope, this is a relationship that can work. However, I cannot underestimate the demanding need for attention that she will require and perhaps not just from you. She will need a creative career music or authorship and so will also need the attention of an audience. I think her interest in people, places, and things are much greater than yours. Between her need for constant attention and her need to be out in the world versus your contentment with the opposite, you must always be aware of a concerted need to compromise. She must also do so. When either of you tires of compromising, watch out!”
Knowing my buddy, I gave the relationship a 50/50 chance because I thought that her excessive demands for attention would become overwhelming with the passage of time. If you remember the television show called “Green Acres,” these two were exactly like the lead characters in that show. One enjoyed city life and a lot of socialization while the other could be content reading a book under a tree in the country. She graduated from a prestigious college with a Masters degree in music and theater. He was a high school graduate with no particularly developed vocational skills. This did not appear to be the proverbial match made in heaven but they were crazy about each other.
The Nodal relationships here are very strong. His very tight square between Pluto and Venus is “on” her Node. Her Midheaven and his Node are in a tight square. When the Nodal contact includes the Sun, Moon, or an Angle, the potential impact in life that one person can make on another, the degree of affectation is heightened. At the time, I looked at all of this and thought that fate had brought them together as they met by chance on a crowded subway. The relationship was something that was meant to be.
It is now 19 years and seven children later. She has all but forgotten him as her career has taken off. While she travels around enjoying this career success, he finds himself alone at home working every day and somehow also taking care of these kids who range in age from toddler to collegiate. Despite all of his successes and sacrifices through the years, his wife has followed the path where there is more applause and attention. There is even a suspicion that there is another man. In short, this has become a very, very nasty situation with many sleepless nights.
Having known Joe all of his life, it is easy for me to see how he has lived out the Pluto-Venus square in his horoscope. I have never known him to be able to say, “no” when under the spell of sexual fulfillment. He has some 15 children through two marriages and two outside relationships!
He has learned the lesson of discipline the very hard way!
Conclusion
In synastric analysis, your eyes should be raised whenever you see the Nodal relationship between horoscopes that has been described here. While it is a sign of great relationship potential, consider the larger picture that there is probably going to be some unfinished business between the two people that will challenge the relationship at some point. If the relationship is one where the aspect contact is not mutual, the person whose planet is making the aspect to the other’s Node is the one who will probably be most impacted by what happens. When the relationship is mutual, both lives will be impacted mutually. A perfect example of this is the late John and Jacqueline Kennedy. Her Uranus squared his Nodal Axis and his Mercury and Mars conjoined her Nodal Axis.
Take a look at the Nodal relationships in your life and in the lives of others that you know. You will become fascinated with what you find!
