Cancer New Moon:
Praying to the Mother
By Dana Gerhardt

On a recent and otherwise beautiful morning, I discovered my dog Jupiter in the bedroom, foaming at the mouth. His eyes were vacant, his jaw was locked. I raced to the vet, where after sedation and blood tests, we knew nothing but a few dark possibilities. Maybe it was poisoning, a brain tumor, a sudden emergence of epilepsy. If Jupiter died that weekend, there would be an autopsy; beyond that, we’d have to wait and see.

I prayed of course. One always prays. After a sleepless night, watching helplessly as Jupiter went into seizure every few hours, I prayed to the Mother of the world. The clock said five in the morning but it was one of those moments that went beyond space or time… I felt myself part of a multitude. We were one body, sitting in helpless vigil for all our suffering loved ones, mothers for their children, children for ailing parents. I was one with the husband watching his dying cancer-stricken wife… there with the frightened newlywed whose husband was injured in a car crash… there with the elderly woman who was about to lose her companion cat. We were one body, gathered in hospitals, tents, living rooms, pacing the streets, lying in fields. And we had no option but to pray to the Mother. What was my suffering compared to the vast suffering of the world? My pain seemed a paltry thing. But the Mother was there with me, saying, "Go ahead and ask." Through tears, I told her it was too soon; I needed more time with my dog.

It is the Cancer New Moon, the moon of the Mother. Cancer evokes both our vulnerability and our strength—that which needs mothering within us, and that which is capable of nurturing, protecting and soothing others in turn. Cancer reminds us to nourish what we love. A water sign, its action is fluid, cleansing, and receptive. With five planets in water at this New Moon, and a wide water trine between Jupiter, Sun/Moon, and Uranus, there is an invitation: Step into the clear pool of your feelings, sink into your heart space, like slipping into a cool bath after a hot summer’s day. What do you find there? Are you troubled? Ask for the Mother’s help. Do you feel blessed? Celebrate the many ways that you’ve been nurtured.

I write this just as the Sun enters Cancer, on Summer Solstice, the longest day of the year. Today I took a three-mile walk with Jupiter. He’s been doing all the usual things, pestering me for cookies, dropping toys at my feet, moaning when I pet him as he lazes on the couch. He’s fine now, seizure-free for three full weeks. The veterinarian has no idea what went wrong, but I know what went right. We received a gift of grace from the Mother. Snatched from the jaws of crisis, we appreciate more deeply what we almost lost. But mostly the mind forgets to enjoy the multitude of daily blessings. The Cancer New Moon, when the gardens are lush and the day stretches out, is an opportunity to remember and appreciate these forgotten things—every sweet little thing—that brings us joy. This too is a prayer to the Mother.

The Cancer New Moon is an anniversary for MoonCircles. Six years ago we launched this website, not knowing how long we could nurture it, and whether or not it would nurture us. We weren’t thinking very far into the future! But looking back, we’ve gotten our greatest delight from all of you, who share our devotion to the cycles of the Moon, the cycles of the Mother. Mercury was retrograde when we launched, and here we are with Mercury going retrograde again in Cancer (on July 4). It just goes to show… not everything begun during Mercury’s retrograde is doomed! This is an excellent time for pulling back from your hectic schedules, letting your projects and busy mind relax, while your intuitive mind takes the lead. Listen to your feelings! When miscommunications occur now, it’s the rational mind who creates them. If you must sign contracts, check them carefully. Keep your sense of humor. And know that whatever breaks down can somehow be mended again. Mercury goes direct on July 28
