May is a month of amazing transformation. In the north country, it is the time of the great chinook winds, the warm moist winds from the west that sweep away winter's final snowfalls, revealing tender green grasses and the first buds of summer. Across the south, it marks the return of Father Sun and his annual journey north, awakening the exotic, mysterious life of the desert and adorning marshlands and tropical pastures with a wild display of color and scent. In the Southern hemisphere, it marks the impending return of winter. This year, I asked the Oracle of the Power Deck to show us what energy we can use during the month of May to move us into true harmony and union with our beautiful Mother Earth, opening ourselves to the receptivity of the feminine and truly listen to what the Great Mother is telling us.

The Oracle gave us Card 44: Witness. "Live in your sacred witness. That inner place of silence and observing is your true identity and therefore your true power. It is all you really have when all else is gone. Like monoliths in an ancient valley, they observe and remember the passage of the ages. The answers that you find through the timelessness of spirituality and the innocence of nature offer the infinite. Each human being is on his or her own path, each different from yours. Answers to your questions are rarely found in another human. Answer your own questions by reflecting on nature and conversing with your own sacred witness."
"Witness" is a card of the East on the Sacred Wheel because the sacred witness is, in the end, all that you have. But it takes great wisdom and illumination to become your sacred witness. "Witness" reminds us to spend time with the Old Wise One within each of us, the one who has been with us down through the ages, whose store of knowledge is limitless. The East also reminds us to use our sense of humor as we test the institutions and beliefs in our lives to find out what is real and what is illusion for each one of us, as an individual.
Spring:
Spring is the time for planting the seeds of the new ideas and new endeavors that you have been dreaming into existence, the time for discovering new clarity in your life. Spring is akin to the beginning cycle of life. As you emerge from your winter hibernation with the great Mother Bear, you call forth the inner child and look at the world through the child’s eyes: through the eyes of curiosity and wonder, through the eyes of excitement and joy for the great possibilities that surround you.
Planting seeds requires great care. In a sense, you must till the soil and choose the fertilizer carefully, paying special attention to the physical body which is one of your greatest allies in this life. You gather together all of the things you have been working with in your cave of hibernation -- all of the ideas and accomplishments, the understandings and insights, your hopes and your fears, that which you are ready to manifest in your life and that which you are ready to discard -- and you bring them out into the light. You separate them into two very distinct bundles, that which no longer serves you and that which you will plant and cultivate in the coming year. Then you are ready to make your giveaway, the sacred process of give and take with the universe.
Write down that which no longer serves you on a sheet of paper. Then you take your piece of paper out into nature and pray over what you have written down, releasing it to the universe for all time. Dig a small hole, tear your giveaway into tiny little pieces and bury it. Mother Earth knows how to transform your frailties and weaknesses into healing power. Ask her to transform your sacred giveaway into the healing light of understanding and wisdom. In other years, perhaps, I would ask you to wrap your giveway around a small stick and burn it in ceremony. But so much of our Great Mother is in the grips of drought, and everywhere the fire danger is extreme in the forests and grasslands. It is in these times that we tear our giveaway into small pieces and bury it. The important thing is for you to make your giveaway an act of healing power in the world. Take the time to make this a meaningful act, for it is how you fertilize the soil for the new growth you seek.
Prayer for Death Arrow:
Great Spirit, Mother Earth, powers of the four directions, my power animal, my allies, my ancestors, and all who love me, hear me now. This is a prayer for my act of power. Thank you for being with me. I honor your presence within my circle, my sacred circle. This is my death prayer arrow. These are all the thing that have kept me from my act of power all this long time. These are the things I am willing to give away, so that I may accomplish my act of power, my act of destiny, in this lifetime. With this next year, I will begin. HO!
"The while of a human's life is watched by the thunder chiefs. You have a road within you, a turquoise road. The imortant thing is to keep your spirit moving along this road. If you do that, in the end of your days, you will merge with the thunder chiefs. All your other roads lead back into absurdity and delusion. Those roads swell with pain, sorrow and confusion.... In the end, all the riddles are solved and the paradoxes are answered. In the end, the meaing of your tears and suffering is clear. And if you find it in your time, you will be full and no one can take it away from you. That is the shaman's way...." Agnes Whistling Elk, Medicine Woman.
