A Light At The
Start Of The Tunnel

Ye are the light of the world.
This well known scripture tells us that in the here and now we are this light. It is a part of us as it is a part of everything – the center of all vibration. The light of our being either pulses unencumbered as we allow it to or dimly lies in wait as we resist.
Notice that it doesn’t say…
Ye are the light of the world if and only if you commit no egregious errors
or
Ye are the light of the world if your weight is proportionate to your height and you have eliminated all trans fats from your diet
or
Ye are the light of the world when and only when you are meditating every day
or
Ye are the light of the world when and only when you are considered a productive part of society by the number of charitable acts and contributions that you make
or…..
I believe you get the point - no fine print conditions whatsoever. It simply states;
Ye are the light of the world – period.
Sometimes, amusingly, I can’t help but place those in the ethereal realm in human states of reaction, seeing hosts of angelic beings with itchy scalps – you know, standing there scratching their heads in disbelief as we struggle accepting this inherent, natural gift - our role as divine expressions of this light.
Imagine a child refusing to open an avalanche of gifts placed around the tree on Christmas morning because he or she feels they aren’t deserving enough or haven’t done their fair share in earning the right to accept the gift.
My experience is that children do not censor their acceptance. It is offered and they allow.
This universal presence of the Infinite is offering us this bounty of Good everyday – always has, always will, and there is nothing that we need do to earn it. There is no ladder of spiritual hierarchy that we need to aspire to in order to be worthy of it. It is available to all right out of life’s starting gate.
That’s why the phrase – a light at the end of the tunnel - caught my attention the other day. This familiar saying seems to dictate that the “light” or relief from a situation or good that we desire is “out there” and we must go through some tumultuous tunnel or get through something before we can experience it. There seems to be a belief in earning the right to have. And even though this human experience supports that belief time and again, earning isn’t a word in God’s vocabulary. Whether pauper or king, if you recognize that the light is there now and allow it to cascade and influence your present circumstances, it does.
What if we simply got that the light we so crave is at the start of the tunnel (life experience) and illuminates our journey to the degree we allow it to?
As I look at my own present day struggles, I keep reminding myself that life is suppose to be about allowing, discovering and experiencing joy. If I devoted as much time to training my mind to remember that as I would devote time to training my 7 month old puppy, I would be well on my way to experiencing that light always. My puppy Harper has no resistance in wanting to learn. As we master the art of shaking, sitting and staying, he’s more than willing to train because he understands that biscuits, bones and abundant praise are the result of his efforts. Oh, to have that much faith in the training process – not questioning whether or not the Universe really will come through.
As metaphysican Ernest Holmes wrote, “Yesterday is forever past and tomorrow will forever elude us. Today is the only day in which we can really live.”
That delicious decision to live today fully allows each of us to experience this tunnel of life as illuminated from the start. Recognize and assimilate it as such and reject the rest. Train yourself in letting go of worldly conditions that separate you from your good and start allowing that light to shine brilliantly, lovingly in your world right now. The rewards await your acceptance.
