A Blurry Life

by Gigi Miner
As I sat in my car, waiting in line to do some banking, I watched another driver pull into the parking lot. The woman at the wheel entered from the wrong direction. She then took great pains to turn her car around in the undersized space. Then this driver decided to try to make her way to the shortest line by driving between cars instead of waiting in line as the rest of us were. Soon, this same person parked her car and trotted into the bank to tend to business. As if this were not enough to inspire some writing, a pick-up truck came and entered the line. Upon seeing that our line was not moving as quickly as he may have hoped, he too bolted around waiting cars. The result was that he ended up waiting just as long, if not longer. All of these harried happenings gave me pause to consider how rushed our world has become. People are in a hurry to do everything except live their lives to the fullest.

Our card for this month is, appropriately, the Eight of Wands. In this card, we see the quickest land animal, the cheetah, keeping pace with eight, rushing wands. Most of this card is a blur. Think about driving in a car at 60 miles per hour. If you look out the side window (hopefully while someone else is driving), the landscape seems to race past you. Objects are not clear. That is how this card feels. Everything is moving so quickly that there is no opportunity to partake of the scenery. How many of us live our lives much in this way?

Today’s society is tuned in to a fast pace. Adults have work responsibilities that keep them hopping. Children have a ridiculous number of activities to squeeze into their already full day. Shopping, paying the bills, doing the banking, fixing dinner, cleaning the house, phone calls, emails, work, the list seems to have no end. As we try to fit in everything that seems important, much of what truly is important is left by the wayside. I can hear it. Yes, we have to work in order to survive. Yes, we have responsibilities. However, there is a fine line between what we have to do and what we should do. All too often, it has been my experience, that humanity tries to fill up life with noise and activity so as to avoid those other things that might be a bit too painful or revealing. If we are too busy with the children’s schedules, we have no time to think about what is lacking in our own lives. If we put in enough overtime to pay the bills, we cannot hear our own spirits cry out. If everything around us moves quickly enough, we need not see what we are letting pass us by and thus, we will not miss it.

Sadly, much of humanity is lost. It feels as if this world has evolved in all areas except the inner self. In that matter, there seems to be a de-evolution. In days gone by, people were concerned with who and what they were born to be and why. A person did not become a healer because there were plenty of pigs and grain involved. Rather, they became a healer because that was their calling and the place in which their gifts lay. The person who became a teacher was moved to pursue this vocation out of the deep wells of their soul. They did not choose it because they liked the hours and there was a good deal that paid off their student loans. No longer do we name our children according to their personality. No longer do we encourage them to follow their heart in deciding what to do with their lives. Now, we usher them off to college regardless of whether it is really necessary. Education has become a god amongst humanity and the money that encourages it is a weapon of retribution. Understand, education is a very important thing, but not if it does not serve us. Education can consist of sitting next to a grandfather and watching how he finishes a wooden cabinet with hand tools. Education can be a mother cooking a meal and talking to her child about life and how to be happy. Education is far more then a piece of paper and the cash that might accompany it.

Our Eight of Wands is a card of quickness. Wands often depict the inner self and energy. The number eight, for me, is often a number of reaction. It reacts to stimuli. In the case of our Eight of Wands, we are reacting to everything around us. We are caught up in the swift current and letting our spirits be dragged along as well. If society says to do something, we are rushed into it by the sheer pace at which it moves by us. How often do we actually sit down to make decisions any more? All too often, we are carried by the waves that thrash us against whichever rocks happen to be in the way. When the Eight of Wands shows up in a reading, it may be telling us that situations will progress very quickly. However, it may also be trying to tell us to slow down. By moving as such a frenzied gait, we miss so much more then we realize. The Eight of Wands may want to tell you to stop and decide how much longer you can continue this pace.

As I sat in my car at that bank, I watched the people rushing all around. Since I was in one place for a period of time, I could have tapped on my steering wheel and become agitated by the wait. Instead, I sat with my husband and chatted about things that would seem so trivial to others. I watched the water falling on the windshield as our snow turned to rain. I saw the fog form on the window next to me. I saw the birds winging by above. And, as I sat there and watched the world spinning around me, I conceived this article. It is amazing what things come to you when you are quiet enough and still enough for them to approach. It is very difficult to hear such things when the noise is constant and the speed is brutal. Life is not a race. In fact, by moving at such a frenetic pace, how much of your life is passing by you? When was the last time that a snowflake caught your fancy? How long has it been since you savored a favorite food, rather then wolfed it down? When your child comes to you to ask the same question for the one-hundredth time, are you on the phone or doing your email, rather then facing them and looking into their eyes so that they know that you hear them and consider them important?

There is a saying that “little things mean a lot”. High speed living is not conducive to dealing with little things. It is rare to even see them if you move too fast. We have taught our children that they must be constantly doing something. Play a video game. Join a school activity. Watch a video. Go, go, go, go, go. Can you ever remember sitting on the ground with a child and watching some ants gather a dropped potato chip? Do you remember what flowers smell like that are not wrapped in florist paper? If you feed the birds, do you stick around long enough to watch them partake of your kindness?

Life is for living. No one can live well in a constant forward motion. Were we forced to walk everywhere that we now drive, consider what things we might be able to enjoy. Even when we walk, it is fast and for the purpose of health and exercise. One of the most pleasurable of activities that is also good for us has been made into another race. Slow down. Spend some time in quiet. It does not have to be any great length. In fact, if you have a hard time dealing with the quiet, get a small egg timer, preferably one of the little sand hourglasses. Let that be your beginning. Two minutes is all you have to take out of your day to try this experiment. Start your day with those two minutes. If you cannot start it, end it thusly. Take two minutes back from the chaos and let them heal you. Sit in the quiet. At first, it will seem like torture if you have been one of the speed demons. Give yourself time to adjust. Make yourself a promise to take those two minutes everyday, regardless of what transpires. Two minutes will not make a difference in how quickly you get to work or how soon you can change the laundry, but it will make a world of difference to your inner self.

Our Eight of Wands is calling you to the quiet. It is asking you to take back your life before it runs out. I have heard it said that getting older contains the joys of memories of a life well-spent. First, however, you might actually need to make a few memories. Memories are not made in hyper-drive. They are made during the simplest of moments; the moments of quiet and reflection. As things begin to quicken with the promise of spring and the warmer weather, remember to take care of yourself. The best way is to remember the lesson of the Eight of Wands. Do not let life pass you by; slow down, stop and live it.

“One of the greatest benefits of Tarot is being able to take control of your life rather then be a victim of it,” is the motto of this professional Tarot consultant, author, and teacher, from upstate New York.

Moonlighting as an adult education instructor, Gigi brings that experience into her Tarot and writing work, helping clients and readers to find their own inner wisdom. Gigi has taught classes on tarot in regular and e-formats.

Believing that "laughter is the best medicine,” there is often a lighter tone to her teachings. When conducting an adult-education class, one of the main questions she asks is, "Are you having fun?” If the answer is "yes" then she knows that her students are learning more then if she were teaching in a more traditional mode.

Gigi has written articles for various newsletters, including Tarot Celebrations, World Tarot Network, and Gateway to Tarot. She has released a book entitled, “Light-of-Day Tarot & Dream Work,” which is available at www.lulu.com/ladyfogg.
