As accelerating advances in technology enable us to probe ever deeper into the very nature of creation, the distinction between science and metaphysics is rapidly disappearing. What could be more spiritual than the search for the Genesis of the Universe or the essence of reality?
Today, revelations in both the sub-atomic and astronomic directions of investigation are so astounding as to make hard-nosed scientists sound like religious mystics. Einstein's revelations about the identity of energy and matter, and the relativity of time and space; Stephen Hawkings' black holes; the "discovery" (by its conspicuous absence) of "dark energy," and the Hubble Telescope's awesome images of inter-stellar incubation and galactic design are just the beginnings of a new age of discovery of the miraculous in space. Astrophysicists now routinely talk about such unlikely phenomena as parallel universes, folded time, and dark energy. This Alice-in-Wonderland cosmology is certainly a long way from Newton's sensible clock-work world.
In the realm of the absolutely small, such unlikely oddities as planet-penetrating neutrinos, multi-dimensional string particles and anti-matter reveal a reality more magical than physical. On the level of quarks and photons, the observer affects the observed: what we see depends on what we're looking for. It turns out that our assumed separation between thoughts and the "real" world is a false one. Physics itself now reaches beyond the dimensions of matter and energy directly into the realm of consciousness. The spiritualists were right: the Universe is all in the mind. Intelligence is everywhere. We are the Creator.
This realization of the primacy of mind, and the resulting scientific paradigm-shift from materialism to energy theory to metaphysics is now evidenced in psychology, medicine, ecology, socially-conscious investing, religion, politics, and in cyberspace.
On the ever-expanding World Wide Web, information, ideas, causes, products and services of every conceivable stripe proliferate in a most democratic way. But the more significant spiritual meaning and applications of the digisphere are not yet as obvious. For example, can grass-roots, world-wide networked altruism succeed where governments fail? Can real-time, universal communications foster the global goodwill needed to counter terrorism and war? Can a planetary approach to the production and distribution of energy resources meet the needs of all? I think so.
Until now, human government has been about power and law. But the new spiritual self-governance is one of internal authority and popular, dynamic consensus. All the laws and armies of the world have not been able to stop terrorism, but it will surely end when enough love prevails over the hatred that causes it. Likewise the evils of genocide, ecocide, child labor and sex- slavery will cease when the greed that drives them is renounced - within and without - by a critical number of conscientious world citizens. This is how all social improvements happen.
How can the Net best serve this enlightened shift to a sane, sustainable and spiritual world? It's up to each of us who use it to answer that vital question every day. Perhaps bringing unity consciousness into the virtual world will be the great geo-political catalyst. Certainly it is worth trying |
