Practical Mystics
Today's New Creative Class

by Jacquelyn Small
Mystics are those people with an inner knowing that there is a greater life beyond the ordinary daily events. They can access this mystical perspective through the invisible worlds of the three higher cognitions -- intuition, inspiration, and the creative imagination. Mystics have inner visions and revelations, often through meditative or non-ordinary states of consciousness.

Mystics are inspired thinkers and visionaries with an eye on the future, able to discern what fits in our bigger story and what are irrelevant details in daily life not to be taken so seriously. They usually have a peaceful attitude and a refined sense of humor.

The mystics of old, however, were visionaries only, and were considered to be impractical. even wasting our time with abstract, unusable wisdom. And this has had some truth in it. Mystics of the past would advise us of possible futures, as "Seers" who could predict what was to come, but were not necessarily interested in how these revelatory visions would come about.

The Practical Mystic is a new archetype appearing today in the human psyche, and beginning to manifest now as "the cultural creatives" or the new "creative class" we're beginning to hear about. Modern researchers Richard Florida, Paul H. Ray, and Sherry Ruth Anderson tell us there are over 50 million of us now in the United States alone. These independent-minded individuals are the synthesis of the Seer and the Scientist.

Today's mystics do not stop with their vision of the ideal; they are the architects, inventors, artists, and builders of these dreams who actually embody their visions by creating and modeling these new ways of being themselves. They intuitively know how to place the mystical perspective into physical reality through studied and efficient techniques. They are not dreamers, but doers of the spiritual life -- scientists of the soul.

This rapidly emerging creative class of individuals is moving into our materialistic world with a steady eye, interested in constructing humanity's new institutions, systems, policies, and procedures that reshape our world, often staying out of the personal melodramas that usually destroy a group or a committee. They usually avoid political arguing, or boasting of their personal philosophies, with no need to stand out, to be right, or to have validation from others. They simply go about their business of helping to create a better world. And they are not necessarily ministers, spiritual guides, teachers, or philosophers. You will find them in all disciplines and in all areas of human living. In my way of thinking, these people are helping us re-align with the divine Plan for humanity.

These modern-day mystics are the carriers of the "Aquarian consciousness" we refer to as the new paradigm. They honor all paths that represent true spirituality and psychological health, while gracefully introducing people to the new approaches without creating much upheaval. They realize this is evolution, not revolution! These new mystics are basically bridge-builders between a world that is dying and one that is rapidly coming into form. They function in society like "vagabond souls" -- free thinkers who have broken away from the mainstream stereotypic and deadened forms, who obey no one and fear no chastisement. They are inwardly guided.

What's leaving, I believe, is the kind of selfish unconsciousness and greed that is destroying our psyches and, indeed, our world. We see evidence of this all around us today as this "shadow consciousness" comes up to be seen almost everywhere we look. Remember, the shadow can only heal if it is revealed and owned. We cannot simply live in denial that the dark side of us is also a fact; we must face this adversarial character that lives in everyone. As in the Celtic lore of the Green Knight: the shadow seeks a worthy opponent, one who will hold steady and face it directly. Then, it's made conscious and can no longer harm us while we are busy looking the other way. The human shadow is always unconscious. Once we make it conscious it loses its power.

The Piscean Age we are leaving is known as the Age of Devotion and Idealism, where dependence on outside authorities to give us "the answers" was the keynote. We've been trained to always look outside ourselves for the "experts" who can tell us what to do and who to be. We've passed through the era where we fanatically worshipped gurus, ministers, dogmatism, charasmatic leaders, psychics, medical doctors and healers. The evolutionary process is moving forward now, toward the expression of each individual's own unfolding "genius." We will feel the urge now more and more to recognize the wisdom within us, and to step into who we've each come here to be. Many today are feeling this pull toward self-expression and a strong need to find their life's purpose. We are unfolding a new petal of our divine Flower, a whole new form of expression. We are now to take those cherished ideals to which we've become so devoted, and build scaffolds for their expression. This is how Practical Mystics spiritualize the material world.

When the archetypal Practical Mystic ignites in your soul, you not only become fascinated with society's need for new institutions, you'll feel motivated to help build the new "temple of Humanity" that will house your species' new and greater Self. To this end we become preoccupied with creating a new vital body that coalesces around a new way of experiencing the archetypal Self. In other words, we step up a rung on the evolutionary ladder and actually become the new creation. This is quite logical if you think about it. How else could we ever evolve except by being what we envision as our own ideal?

Birthing a new consciousness is accomplished by staying focused on our spiritual purpose - on why we incarnated on earth at this particular time. By such perpetual Self-remembrance we are not so deterred by life's continual flow of chaotic circumstances; we focus on steadily drawing our desired future into the present life, in whatever manner each day's opportunity can bring. We carry the seeds of our future within our creative imaginations. We have a bright future ahead of us if we will stay focused on the kind of world we'd all like to create together that is more attuned to our spiritual intentions. Always, it's been just a few small bands of people who change the entire world!

Now would be a good time to look back over your life and re-collect all the "soul events," you've had, those extraordinary moments that have shown you that you live beyond your physical birth and death in a much greater Reality. The mystics and the scientists of today are joining forces in recognizing this greater Reality and speaking out about it. Perhaps we're truly on the verge of blossoming as our species-type -- a whole new Self, embodied through each one of us who can open to this larger view.

I'd like to end with one of my favorite quotes from novelist Gail Godwin, from her book The Finishing School. She is speaking to one of her students named Justin:

"There are two kinds of people... One kind you can just tell by looking at them at what point they congealed into their final selves. It might be a very nice self, but you know you can expect no more surprises from it. Whereas, the other kind keep moving and changing..... They are fluid..... always moving forward..... making new trysts with life, and the motion of it keeps them young. In my opinion, they are the only people who are still alive. You must be constantly on your guard, Justin, against congealing."

If this message inspires you, you just might be one of those with a mystical consciousness who sees the bigger picture and refuses to "congeal." You are vitally needed for this current crisis our world is facing today, and now you can know that you are not alone. There are over 50 million of us who share your views.
