Astrologer's Notes:
Preparing for a Consultation

##3. Organizing your measurements for Consultation
--The initial orientation to Time

by Noel Tyl

“Rapport” is a nice, highly refined French word that has many meanings, but it has been adopted into English usage to capture the essence of affinity, the way two or more sensibilities relate to each other. Dane Rudhyar (who was born French) applied the word to astrology, to the contact-feel of meaning between two planets, points in the horoscope, measurements.

I think the word can also capture the affinity between behavioral potentials within time. Let me show you.

Prefatory note: There’s an astrological law upon which we may rest with great security. It is that life occurrences of major importance occur in relation most specifically to Arc and transit contact with the Angles of the horoscope, with the Sun or the Moon. The Angles are all-important, and it is with the Angles that we work to make rectification a viable technique. The Midheaven reflects the time of birth, and the Ascendant shows the location of birth; the Angles together mark our orientation to our earthly existence.

A man has Pluto in the 12th,14.5 degrees above the Ascendant. We can see and feel a rapport between Pluto –the sense of life perspective— in the 12th House and ruling the Scorpio Ascendant –personal projection, identity base— that measures 14.5 years into life. It’s as simple as that. Time will illuminate this potential, this rapport.

With the Scorpio Ascendant and Pluto arcing there during adolescent years –AND with the rulers of the 5th and 8th Houses (the Houses involved with the sexual profile) under high developmental tension in the natal horoscope—we can expect a strong focus on a new perspective of values in personal projection, most possibly in terms of sexuality. –In the reality of his development at that time, this young man “came out”, as it were, with his homosexuality.

When Pluto fulfilled the rapport arc out of the 12th to her Leo Ascendant at age 31, Marilyn Monroe changed her entire life perspective by marrying esteemed playwright Arthur Miller. There was an affinity, a rapport relationship here in terms of life-perspective potential to help refashion, refurbish Marilyn’s projection of Self, her pride, perhaps restoring the father she never knew.

In Beethoven’s horoscope [December 16, 1770 at 11:03 AM LMT in Bonn Germany], Uranus in the 2nd House, ruling his Ascendant (special individuality indeed) came to the opposition (awareness) with his Midheaven in thirty degrees, at age 30. It was precisely then that Beethoven gave his first concert, in Vienna, for his own benefit! He clearly established himself as his own Master, growing away from Haydn and the movement of the times. He was special indeed; individuality, innovation, and career exposure all came together, and a new era in music began.

Beethoven’s Midheaven at 12 Sagittarius has a rapport with Pluto that measures 34 degrees. In July 1804, just before Beethoven’s 34th birthday, the rapport arc with Pluto was fulfilled by the Midheaven: Beethoven completed his Eroica symphony which changed music history forever and still is a dominant statement in the art. Its originality was so great then and the times were so politically turbulent (with Napolean’s armies occupying Vienna) that the symphony was like an explosive social force of commentary.

Look at your own horoscope. Find rapport measurements in time between planets in the 8th and 9th, the 12th, the 3rd, the 6th and the next Angle going counter-clockwise. Change the degrees to “years” and think into your life development in terms of the planet and Angle being fulfilled. [Note: if you are measuring an arc over 30 degrees and you were born between March and September, add an extra year, as if there were an extra degree to fulfill … This is because your progressing Sun is intrinsically slower that the Sun for those born between September and March and a one-degree/year error accumulates over thirty years.]

Strong Arcs to Angles in the earliest years are most often manifested within family changes, through the parents, moves, father’s change of job and status, etc.

Then there are rapport measurements –abbreviated and generalized Solar Arcs—between planets themselves.

Just measure the distance between your Sun and Venus or Venus and Sun (going counter-clockwise). If it occurred between the ages of, say, 16 and 28, an important romance could very well have taken place. What did this romance mean? Where did it lead?

If it occurred after marriage, what then?

Take a look at a “positive” arc or intensifying arc with the planet ruling the 7th House! This too will be romance, almost assuredly. If a disruptive connection is involved, you will usually see disruption.

Check out the square, conjunction, or opposition between Saturn and Pluto. Undoubtedly, this period in life was one of the worst: a necessary “destructuring” for new development; loss for recovery and gain.

Look at arcing rapport measurements between Neptune and conjunction or square with an Angle. So often, this is a time of ego wipeout, bewilderment, and aloneness. What is happening with the spirit at that time? How does it eventually work out?

The preparation process for horoscope consultation requires organizing units of synthesis to understand behavioral development within the press to fulfill needs, AND it requires seeing timing in this process, from the past into the future. The astrologer begins by assembling key arcs in chronological order. A general scenario begins to emerge and will be illuminated in discussion during the consultation. While transit precision is applied to these arcs later, the orientation within time must start with rapport measurements of major planets and the Angles, and between key planets themselves.

This essay presents “rapport arcs” in order to acquaint you with Solar Arcs, the most effective prediction system in astrology. It is a world of miracle and magic, and I suggest you see my book by that name: “Solar Arcs,” Llewellyn Publications. Your life and work in astrology will be changed.

Remember this image, this feel: imagine seeing your spouse for the first time “across a crowded room.” You felt an affinity, you sought to fulfill that rapport between you, and you married, conjoined, for better or for worse. This is what is happening in the horoscope: behavioral faculties and projections of our mind are fulfilling affinities with other faculties and projections. They start working together within time to portray who we are in the process of becoming.
