Tarot: Gigi Miner's Ethyrial Tarot
Love Heals

It was more then a year ago now. I had begun to notice that my two male cats seemed to be consuming an inordinate amount of food. I chalked it up to winter’s cold and their need to burn more fuel in order to keep warm.
One day, I needed to venture into the cellar in order to tend to something. Our cellar door has a cat door cut into it and was a nice feature that came with the house. As I began my descent, I noticed an orange cat darting down the stairs. Our younger male is orange and I looked back up as I thought that I had seen him just a moment ago. There he was, watching me go down into the basement. Our dog took off in the direction that the mirage had gone. I followed his nose. There it was. A small, orange cat was in our basement. I shooed the dog and the small cat came to me, albeit hesitantly. I took her outside and released her, not wanting to keep her from her family. She meowed at me and my heart skipped a beat. Still, I sent her on her way.
By the next day, I returned to the cellar, more out of curiosity then for something to do. There, hidden in the same spot, was the same, small cat. She was skittish but she came to me. I procured some food and water for her. We had sworn that we would have no more pets. Three were more then enough. Somehow, I could not turn away this little creature. I called her up the stairs to follow me. She did, but was very careful. Any noise would send her bolting for the cat door. Too much attention had the same results. From my investigations, I believe that she had been living in our home for several months. At the time that I found her, the vet confirmed that she was approximately six months old.
They say that a child develops their personality and view of the world, whether for good or bad, before they enter school at the age of five. With cats, six months is neigh unto puberty. Their view of how things work in the world around them is much the same way established. When I realized that this poor little thing had been abandoned at only two or three months old, my heart ached for her. I discovered an old piece of insulation on which she had been sleeping in the cold basement. Her eyes ran from a small infection that grew from living in the dark and dampness. She had an eye that showed signs of being injured and I managed to confirm that her eyesight was either poor or non-existent in that eye. I imagined her baby-self, curled up, scrounging for food at night and all alone in the darkness. Something about this young cat pulled at me like nothing else.

Our card this month is the Empress card from the Ethyrial Tarot ©. With Mothers’ Day on the horizon, it seemed appropriate to use the mother archetype in this article. This card has been one of the most difficult for me to create. I have spent, literally, years trying to come up with the perfect “mother” card. For a very long time, I fell far short. Over the last year, I have used an amazing amount of patience in wooing this cat. I would talk to her and move as slowly as I could so as not to frighten her. I would tempt her with tidbits of food; gently petting her while she ate. With time I knew that she would equate petting with eating. It took most of this last year just to breach the wall that she had built around herself in order to survive. I felt a kindred spirit in this small critter.
One of the ideas I had for the Empress was that of healing. When a child falls and hurts him or herself, the mother archetype kisses it and makes it all better. This is the case whether the hurt is physical, emotional, or otherwise. The love given by the mother archetype helps to heal all wounds. As I worked with Bastet, she began to take on the stature of the goddess for which she was named. Little by little, she became less afraid and more affectionate. With more time, she even began to get into mischief as any healthy kitten is known to do; this seemed to be her way of living the kitten-hood that she did not have when young. I found myself allowing her to do things that the boys would not have lasted a minute doing. I raised them from kittens, so they learned early with what they could and could not get away. For Bastet, I found it necessary to stretch the boundaries. To scold her too quickly or too harshly would result in major set backs in her socialization. When she knocked magnets off of the refrigerator, I laughed and encouraged her. When she would sneak into a cupboard and want to explore, I would open another door so that she could find her way out after she bored with the game. I heard over and over how I was spoiling this little girl, much to the chagrin of my daughters, who said that I was never so lenient with them or our other pets.
If we look at our card, we see Bastet sitting in an assured stance. Here she is a mere shadow of the timid young thing that could barely stay in the same room with someone without racing to the familiar safety of the cellar. Here she shines an aura that gives one the idea that there is much more beneath the surface; and there is. That aura is also white and white light is equated with healing in many circles. She bares a star at the exact spot of her third eye. This tells us of the knowledge she keeps beyond that of the physical realm. How often does a mother know when one of her young is at risk? Beside her is a crystal ball. If you look closely, you may see her reflection in the ball. What I came to realize was that she became a reflection of the love that I bestowed upon her. I came to see myself in a new light in her eyes. As I worked to heal her, her evolution helped me to work out many of the issues that I had in my own life. Her self confidence became a reflection of mine. Her trusting helped me to trust. While I gave her as much love and patience as I could muster, I found that I was being healed along side of her.
Many of us have not known what the archetypal mother is like. Some of us have sworn off that image in order to live apart from an influence that was less then we deserved. What I have discovered is that you can become the mother-image that you have not known, both in your own life and in the life of someone else. As you create the healing aura around another, you will be blessed with healing yourself. As you offer kindness to a hurting soul, their mending will reflect back onto you.
With Mothers’ Day upon us, many reading this may not have someone to whom they may pay sincere homage. This Mothers’ Day can be the beginning of your Empress-ness. Where you have lacked love, give it to a kindred spirit. Where you were criticized, give encouragement. In the places where you hurt, apply salve on another. As you see how your love allows a spirit to grow, your own spirit will soar in response to the love that you do have in your life. Love heals; both in the giving and in the receiving. For those of you who are in need of love, begin to give it and you will be amazed at how it returns to you. Soon, you may feel your own inner Empress become powerful and able to emit an overflowing love and confidence. With time and patience, you can not only heal those around you, but yourself in the process. The wounds that you still carry may never truly heal, but I promise that this giving of love and healing will change your view of the Mother/Empress. Eventually, that dark view will fade into the background, and your new, loving image will appear.
To all of you, Happy Empress Day!

“One of the greatest benefits of Tarot is being able to take control of your life rather then be a victim of it,” is the motto of this professional Tarot consultant, author, and teacher, from upstate New York.
Moonlighting as an adult education instructor, Gigi brings that experience into her Tarot and writing work, helping clients and readers to find their own inner wisdom. Gigi has taught classes on tarot in regular and e-formats.
Believing that "laughter is the best medicine,” there is often a lighter tone to her teachings. When conducting an adult-education class, one of the main questions she asks is, "Are you having fun?” If the answer is "yes" then she knows that her students are learning more then if she were teaching in a more traditional mode.
