AstroDPsychology:A Synthesis

Houses As Fertile Ground
For Development Of
Psycho-Spiritual Potentials

by Glenn Perry, Ph.D., MFT
In last month's column, I defined houses as environmental contexts for the expression of planetary functions. A house signifies precise conditions -- people, events, and circumstances -- that influence the growth and development of the psyche. Thus, houses are the actual experiences, the fertile ground, through which our human poten°©tials are nourished and developed. They provide the concrete events necessary for the unfoldment of innate capacities.

The exact nature of the capacity being developed is related to the sign that is the natural ruler of that house, e.g., Leo, the need for creativity, is implicit in 5th house circumstances that require creative self-expression. In this regard, a house signifies a set of conditions that provide a vehicle for satisfaction of its ruling sign-need. Conditions indigenous to the 5th house -- creativity, romance, and play -- provide a vehicle for self-expression and validation of identity, which are the primary needs of Leo.

Not only do houses provide opportunities for need satisfaction, they also signify conditions that require development of the appropriate functions. Every house has a set of requirements to fulfill if experiences within that house are to be fully satisfying. Again, these requirements have to do with the attributes associ°©ated with the sign to which that house corresponds. A 5th house experience of romance, for instance, would best be met by being romantic—a quality of Leo. Just so for every other experience of that house: Leonian attributes of creativity, dramatic flair, spon°©taneity, playfulness and dynamic self-confidence are ideally suited to meeting the requirements of 5th house experiences.

Of course, not everyone has these attributes developed to the degree that they would like. The potential is there; it only needs to be activated. If a man meets a woman whom he finds attractive, then his romantic proclivities are activated. For better or worse, he makes the effort to be amiable and romantic. Houses, then, are actually psychological environments that make for the fuller development and expression of personality potentials. The specific aspect of personality being developed is indicated by the natural sign ruler of that house.

Placing Need and Style In Context

How a person meets the requirements of a house is symbolized by the actual signs and planets that tenant that house. Any sign can be on the cusp of any house. For example, a person may have Cancer on the cusp of the 1st house, which would be his Ascendant, or “Rising Sign.” Although Aries is the archetypal ruler of the 1st, if someone has Cancer Rising this would mean that the basic need and style that Cancer symbolizes would be evident in the way 1st house situations are approached for that person. To a limited extent, one’s ease or difficulty in negotiating the challenges of a house will be reflected in the sign that marks the cusp of that house. The timid, sensitive, and shy nature of Cancer, for example, is ill suited for 1st house experiences that require strength, assertion, and boldness.

More important than signs, however, are the planets that occupy houses. When a planet occupies a house, it simply means that the psychological functions symbolized by that planet will express themselves through the circumstances symbolized by that house. Planets in houses show what functions are associated with what circumstances. Houses, in turn, show the context within which these functions and their derivatives are to be experienced.

Planets in houses manifest in three distinct ways: (1) as process; (2) as a psychological state; and (3) as an environmental event, e.g., a relationship with a person or a situation that reflects the nature of the planet-sign-house combination. In this column, we will limit ourselves to exploring psychological processes in houses.

Processes In Houses

Planets represent actions, or processes, conducive toward the fulfillment of a motivating need. A planet’s behavior is always in the service of an underlying psychological drive symbolized by the sign that planet rules. Accordingly, the planet’s house position shows where the native attempts to satisfy that need. If Pluto is in the 6th, the need for transformation (Scorpio) must be satisfied in relation to work and health by cleansing, transforming, and renewing the 6th house work/health environment.

In striving to meet its ruling need, each planet represents a particular type of action, e.g., the Sun expresses, the Moon listens, Venus attracts, Saturn organizes, Uranus awakens, Pluto transforms, and so on. Of course, there is more than one verb related to each planet, but every verb is self-consistent with every other verb that belongs to that planet. A planet’s range of action is going to be most apparent in the department of life symbolized by the house it occupies. Saturn in the 7th house, for instance, is going to control, regulate, and perfect human relationships, working hard to make sure that things are balanced, fair, and equitable.

A planet approaches the challenge of a house in its own characteristic way, for better or worse. For example, success in a career (10th house) generally requires disciplined focus and painstaking hard work; any planet in the 10th must dedicate itself to this task. But how easily can it do so? Jupiter in the 10th house is going to feel restrained by such demands, for Jupiter is happy-go-lucky, full of faith and vision, and content to talk about the possibilities of what might be accomplished. But actually work? Well, Jupiter might work as long as things don’t get too boring. It would actually prefer to teach about work, establishing sure-fire principles for achieving success -- even if the founder of the theory doesn’t always put his own principles into practice.
Situational Specificity of Processes

From a process perspective, we can assume the following: (1) the need represented by a sign will be satisfied through the circumstances of the house that its ruling planet occupies; and (2) the requirements of a house will be met in a manner symbolized by the planets that tenant it.

As an example, consider Saturn in Virgo in the 5th house. Recall that Saturn rules Capricorn, meaning that Saturn is the faculty that satisfies the Capricorn drive for per°©fection in material form. Since Virgo represents the need for efficiency and productive service to others, Saturn in Virgo would mean structuring (perfecting) in an efficient, detailed and useful manner. Taking one aspect of the 5th house -- that of creativity -- °©and relating it to the process symbolized by Saturn in Virgo, we come up with a person who has a very structured, disciplined, and analytical approach to creative projects. This is a person who may be short on spontaneity, but quite successful when given the time to complete his project in the slow, labori°©ous and technical manner that Saturn in Virgo requires. In turn, the creative endeavor would probably serve a useful purpose; e.g., it might help the native accomplish some kind of task (Virgo).

Summing up the process, we find the Capricorn need is satisfied by the Saturn faculty in a Virgo manner in a 5th house context. Or, to be more specific: (1) the need for perfection (Capricorn) is satisfied through creativity (5th house); (2) the manner it is expressed is Virgonian, i.e., in an analytical, utilitarian framework; and (3) 5th house requirements of play and creativity are met in a Saturn in Virgo manner—by structuring a project in a precise and useful way. If this person were to describe the process, he might say: "My drive for success (Capricorn) is satisfied by structuring (Saturn) a creative project (5th house) in such a way that it is efficient, practical and utili°©tarian (Virgo)." The point here is that the behavioral activity that Saturn in Virgo symbolizes will be most evident in 5th house situations. This suggests that many personality traits are situationally specific, i.e., they will be evidenced most clearly in a certain context.

Summary & Conclusion

From the forgoing, we can conclude that individual development unfolds in a manner characterized by specific planet-sign-house combinations. Not only are the psychological capacities inherent in house circumstances developed when planets tenant that house, but houses also provide a vehicle and catalyst for development of the signs/planets that occupy them.

In the above example, the capacity for creative self-expression is stimulated by 5th house factors involving Saturn in Virgo; thus, one has to develop one's creative potentials (5th house), but in a manner that draws upon Saturn in Virgo aptitudes. In effect, Saturn in Virgo is in the service of the 5th, i.e., it must organize efficiently for the sake of 5th house objectives: a performance, a romance, or a sporting event. In striving to meet 5th house requirements, Saturnian potentials for mastery and success are stimulated, which further involve Virgonian aptitudes for competence, efficiency, and service. In the end, the unique blend of Saturn, Virgo, and the 5th house creates a developmental process in which several interdependent potentials can be realized via collaborative endeavors.

What is truly important about such configurations is not the probable outcomes they symbolize, but how those outcomes provide opportunities for the further development and maturation of personality potentials. Over time, planet-sign-house configurations are likely to evolve from primitive, less integrated versions to more sophisticated, fully actualized expression. A person at age 22 may express his 5th house Saturn in Virgo via an uptight, obsessive concern with performance, so that his expression is inhibited, robotic, and controlled. By age 35, however, he may have perfected a method of creative self-expression that entails producing software for the gaming industry. He presents his ideas effectively to his superiors, thus gaining accolades and advancing himself in the company hierarchy. He may even successfully romance the bosses' daughter!
