Important Tips in Analysis –
Part VII
Practical Application of the Cadent Grand Cross

by Basil Fearrington
Every House in the horoscope represents a zone of life experience. In beginning studies, beginners frequently wonder what happens to the empty Houses. They learn later that all zones of experience are tied together through significator dynamics and our lexicon of aspects.

The first three Houses in the natural horoscope are the focal Houses for the Grand Cross that they are in. The 1st House symbolizes identity and self projection. Squaring the parental axis (Houses IV-X), we know that identity is molded, shaped, and affected by the relationship or lack of relationship with one’s parents, all of which is projected to others through relationships (7th House).

In last month’s essay, we saw how one’s sense of worth and value (2nd House) are tied into the ability to give and receive love and how one interacts with the worth and values of others. This is the drama of the Succedent Grand Cross.

In the Cadent Grand Cross of Houses (III-VI-IX-XII), the focal House is III. This is where we begin to see the quality of the overall mindset. It is the place where opinions are formulated, where viewpoints are held and assimilated. It is very, very important here to know and understand the relationship between House III and Houses VI-XII. In the psychological sense, Houses VI and XII have to do with the broad term of cooperation. What this tells us is that the way you see things and the overall perspective that you have about people, places, and things plays an important role in how you cooperate with others on their terms and how others cooperate with you on your terms. All of this works hand in hand with the House IX symbolism of education, academia, the world view, and most importantly, how you handle dealing with the thoughts, viewpoints, and opinions of others. When there is a hard aspect relationship between the significators or planets of the III-IX axis, there is frequently some kind of conflict between the way “I” think versus the way “they” think.

When the 9th House significator is involved in aspect tension, we expect an interruption in education. In today’s society, the experience of going to college, especially when it is away from home, is the first experience that takes one out of one’s environment. This experience takes one out of the prescriptions set up by the home environment and out into the prescriptions set up by society. If the education is interrupted or denied, what can happen is that one never leaves home, so to speak. The world can forever be viewed through the lens of the early environment. If that environment was not supportive, was dysfunctional, etc, the world view often runs parallel with it and one stays the same.

If you have moved away from the environment that you were raised in, especially if you’ve moved away a considerable distance to another state or country, when you go back to your old neighborhood, you will see old friends who never left the area. You often find that they have not changed much at all and their behaviors have worked to defend the sameness they face daily.

The entire perspective of the mindset is what we find in House III. The entire Cadent Grand Cross has to do with the perspective of communication, information, education, and cooperation.

The Dysfunctional Cadent Cross Reaction

The first reaction to unfulfilled needs of any kind usually comes through the mode of behavior known as defensiveness. Defensiveness works hand in hand with over-compensatory behavior. In Cadent terms, when these behaviors are at work to defend the identity, any of the following can take place in the personality:

Tendency to be extremely judgmental

Tendency to impose personal opinions on others

A complete adaptation to the way others think

The usage of opinions or stands on things to define the identity

Compulsive or obsessive thinking

Depression

Super idealism

Fanaticism

All of these and more can be and usually are manifestations of a dysfunctional Cadent Grand Cross in a horoscope. These are the people whose mouths, thoughts, and viewpoints get them into trouble.

Examples

Two examples should drive the point home clearly.

In this first example, the first observation of the horoscope reveals that all planets in the western hemisphere except Neptune are retrograde. This emphasizes the eastern hemisphere. Quickly, we know that the orientation in life to life will be one of defensiveness and self protection. The question is, “why?” What would cause someone to be that way?

The first place to look in order to find the question to the question above is always the parental axis. Here, we see Pluto, ruler of X, opposes Mars, ruler of III! The retrogradation of Saturn corroborates the initial observation, focusing attention on the father relationship. Its placement in VIII suggests that over-compensatory behaviors are likely to take place in terms of the worth and values of others. As well, we can expect concerns with sexuality, which leads us to look at the 5th House. Mercury, ruler of the 5th House (and the 8th) is retrograde and squares Saturn. It is placed in the 11th House. This highlights the Succedent Grand Cross of Houses. What about the all-important 2nd House? It is ruled by Neptune and Neptune squares the Sun, ruler of VII. We have an uncertainty of worth that manifests in relationships and this brings us back to Pluto’s opposition to Mars. The suggestion here is that this is a person whose early environmental experiences with his father (or lack of a desired relationship) led to inferiority feelings that manifested in difficulties concerning the giving and receiving of love, a certain kind of stiffness with others when it comes to their worth and their values and an overall difficulty getting along with others.

Please note that Uranus, ruler of the Ascendant, is retrograde (a delay or difficulty in identity development),is in VI (cooperating with others), and is part of a T-square. With Mars in I receiving the opposition from Pluto, it is crystal clear that identity concerns are tied into self worth issues which led to the difficulties in love and sex, cooperating with others and in relationships of all kinds. Nevertheless, Pluto’s close square to the Midheaven suggests a grand potential of prominence and recognition on whatever level the man is on in his life, providing his reality supports the possibility.

Finally, it is important to note Mars=Sun/Moon, which ties in all things Mars within this horoscope to the core of the man’s being. That is, Mars in Aquarius (the application of energy in the world in terms of humanitarian, social, or religious factors) and the opposition it receives from Pluto, taking that Mars symbolization to a level of extremes that can be way out of perspective. Over and over again, we see the important tie between some kind of parental dynamic and the 3rd House dynamic.

All that I know about Rush Limbaugh is that he is a very successful megaphone for Conservative views who makes Clear Channel Broadcasting more money than any of its other broadcasters and by far. I know nothing of his upbringing so I cannot list any real life dimensions that correlate with the parental or sexual dynamics that are shown here. But one thing is for sure, Rush Limbaugh’s identity is completely wrapped up in his social commentary against those whose views oppose his. There is very little difference in the way he talks about terrorists versus the way he talks about Liberals or Democrats. He is not a man who easily gets along with others unless they happen to think exactly as he does. If your views reflect his, he is a delight to you. Otherwise, he is almost totally offensive. Everything is tied into his views.

Example 2

The first impression of this horoscope shows a southern hemisphere emphasis, which suggests the sense of being pushed out into the world out of one’s environment (usually because there isn’t enough of an anchor there) and being pushed around, controlled, or victimized by life’s circumstances.

The Sun conjoins Mercury in Sagittarius – a super mental idealism symbolism that expresses itself through the Taurus Moon in what is usually an affable personality that needs to keep things status quo.

A quick inspection of the parental axis shows Venus, ruler of IV, squared by Saturn (retrograde!). This means that what would normally be too wide a contact between Uranus and the Nodal Axis is in effect. The father was likely out of the picture in some capacity and the mother was the one influencing the individuality.

Saturn’s retrogradation here is extremely important because it rules the Ascendant. This ties the father situation into the identity in a powerful way. Saturn’s placement in III suggests that communication will be the vehicle used to defend the identity against the inner tensions brought on by the parental factors. Saturn is opposed by Mars, ruler of III. There is going to be a clash of viewpoints with others that can be very problematic.

Saturn is in a quindecile relationship to Jupiter and Uranus in VIII (the tense focus of the worth and values of others), which makes this 3rd House dimension obsessive, compulsive, and strong. Uranus’ rulership of II and Jupiter’s rulership of XI bring dimensions of self-worth and lovability into the picture. And added to all of this is a Grand Trine in Earth (“I don’t need you; I can do it myself) whose outlet is to the 3rd House Saturn! There can be no question that this is a person who uses her views, opinions, or writings in ways that are probably not to her benefit.

This is the horoscope of a young woman who attends a prestigious music college in the northeastern part of the country. She dropped out of high school because she simply did not get along with anyone. She was constantly at odds with both teachers and students. She was asked to leave every school she attended.

The young lady’s father left the home before she was born. In fact, it was her mother’s announcement to her father that she was pregnant that made him decide to leave. They were never married. “Marsha” was born into difficult circumstances. Not only did she not know her father but her mother was not very supportive of her in the ways she wanted support. The sibling relationships were equally horrible. So with no family support, she decided to run away from home, focused herself in music and is now on her way to receiving a prestigious certification in music. But in the mean time, she has become a member of a certain religio/philosophical organization and is constantly on a soap box with others about what they should and should not do, what is right and what is wrong, etc.

Marsha found me as a result of my writing on this web site. She described herself as being privately lonely and frustrated. But outwardly she was the picture of confidence and self esteem. Her “show” to others was her wide vocabulary and sharp opinionation. Together, we were able to come to an agreement that all of the opinionation and debating with others was the only real outlet she had for anyone to pay attention to her. She picked fights with people simply to get their attention!!!!

Marsha is now in therapy working on the issues she developed from the difficult parental situation and a particular difficult relationship with one of her brothers. She has already come to realize that her opinions and views are only opinions and views. They are not who she is and her consistent opposition to others has never brought her a moment of happiness, which, in the end, is what we all want.
