Got Stress? Want Less?

The “F” Word

by Shaun Brown
My BeWell therapeutic massage practice has been serving this community for 13 years. In that time of study, observing clients and the body, I have learned that stress is the #1 cause of most illnesses.

STRESS: An applied force or system of forces that tends to strain or deform a body. Dictionary.com Consistent, habitual thought patterns leading to real or unreal expectations that may or may not be achieved is how I define it. This type of thought pattern sets into motion a release of the hormone combination epinephrine (adrenaline) and cortisone from the adrenal glands, causing your heart to race ~ the flight or fight response. The body has designed this chemical response for our survival such as running from a saber tooth tiger. But when this response becomes a lifestyle we’re in big trouble.

This lifestyle causes a myriad of illnesses and disorders such as chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, and insomnia, not to mention high blood pressure, anxiety, headaches, weight gain and rapid aging. Hmmm how did we get here?

SOLUTION? The most important morning ritual that millions and myself have found effective is to start with 5-10 minutes of deep breathing and visualization techniques. This exercise will reduce and in most cases eliminate the accumulation of stress that contributes to most illnesses.

Begin this process by telling your loved ones that you are trying something new for your health. Who knows it might catch on. Once you set up a respectful or sacred space for your self it is amazing how others will want the same.

If you need to get up 15 minutes earlier for this it is worth it. Find a quiet place, sit in a relaxed position~ read a portion of an inspirational book or start keeping a morning journal of simple thoughts and feelings. As you take a deep breath, eyes closed, imagine that your are filling your whole body with a breath of fresh air, starting from the soles of your feet with one slow breath all the way up and out of the top of your head. Repeat the breath again going from the top of your head down to the soles of your feet visualizing the breath going into the Earth.

Do this simple slow breathing technique about 5 times and notice your calmness. You can even do this in the office~ trust me no one will ask. After several breaths this is a good time to view any problems you have on your mind. Imagine that you are placing them in a balloon and watching them float away until the balloon disappears. This is also a good time to state your gratitude’s and prayers. That’s it, it so simple and effective. The mind is a powerful tool in eliminating stress if we let it! Morning meditation and reflection raises your serotonin levels, the feel good chemistry in our brain. It also allows you to visually let go of what you do and don’t have control of~ thus over time greatly reducing your stress level by recognizing what changes you can make.

As an “A” type personality that has been doing this exercise for 15 years it has dramatically changed my life and my chemistry! You are the only one that can give yourself permission to stop the debit that continues to accumulate every morning you get out of bed. Starting a 5-10 minute morning routine such as breath work gets you centered before you start your day so that your life doesn’t have to be a struggle. Time management will become easier because you’re not wasting so much needless “worry” energy and taxing your body. You can actually get more done when you are focused. You deserve to have a more calm and balanced life. Give this gift to yourself.

Until next time, BeWell!

The “F” Word

Does anybody know what that means and do we do it enough? Probably most people, especially now, do not. You know the “F” word? ~Fun. What ever happened to the term …are we having fun yet?

When I was much younger the “F” word was pretty easy to do and to get others involved in doing it too. But as I have gotten older I have found that getting in a rut; getting too serious; focusing on the comfortable narrow can become a lifestyle. It is so easy to do.

One day, while having time with my mentor, she asked me if I knew what the ”F” word meant? Well of course my mind went in all kinds of creative directions but out of respect and not to embarrass myself I asked, “What do you mean?” She said, “You know FUN. Do you know what that is and how to do it?” Her reply stunned me for an instant because I had no idea what she was talking about. With my busy life of making a living and raising my son, the “F” word had become a faded memory~ a foreign language if you will. Funny thing, my reason for the visit with her was to discuss why I hadn’t been happy lately.

This is the exercise she gave me to do and so I pass this on to you:

Sit down in a quiet moment, maybe your 5-10 minute morning reflection time and make a list of 10 things that you would like to do for fun. If you can’t think of 10 things just make them up. Make a commitment to yourself to lace those 10 things in your planner/calendar and then go do them. When you reach the end of doing those 10 things~ just hit rewind. Eventually this will become a habit. We schedule everything else in our calendar why not fun?

Doing the “F” word brings more balance and a sense of humor in your life. If you are not happy chances are you need more fun and less serious. Fun doesn’t have to cost much. There are tons of events, plays, and outdoor activities going on everywhere. This could also be the time to re-explore that creative side that has called to you for years. Remember, fun is an essential food for your health and well being and you can share this “F” word with your friends!
