Libra New Moon Lesson:
Balancing the Scales of Life
By Pythia Peay

Each month of the solar year, the Sun passes through one of the twelve "houses" of the Zodiac. Symbolically, this can be seen as the soul's initiation into twelve archetypes. In this way the Zodiac functions as an astral temple-in-the-round: a circular compass with twelve chambers that focuses the direction of our spiritual work. Year after year, month after month, the Sun illuminates one of these twelve perennial wisdom teachings. Just as the Sun has passed through the temple of the sky millions upon millions of times, so is there always a new layer of meaning to be discovered in the twelve magical myths of the Zodiac. This month's lesson: Libra. The archetype of peace, love, harmony, beauty, and justice.

The aspects in the sky at each New Moon tailors our archetypal astral lesson in very specific ways. This month, the communications planet Mercury is a powerful influence. Barely moving, it is stationing in the sky as it prepares to turn retrograde in the sign of Scorpio, exact on October 28. In addition, Mercury is moving in close conjunction with Jupiter at 23 Scorpio. Scorpio is a sign that rules the mysterious, occult, and invisible realms that lie beyond the material realm. Jupiter enlarges whatever it touches, and together with Mercury in Scorpio we are being asked by these planetary teachers to go deep, to penetrate beneath the surface appearances of our lives. Saturn in Leo and Neptune in Aquarius squaring Jupiter and Mercury only add to the pressure many of us may be feeling at this time. Still, if we work with the energy, it can be a time of focus and concentration. Great achievements are possible. In addition, Mars and Venus - the masculine and the feminine - are also in Libra. Like bookends, they enclose the union of the New Moon (feminine) with the Sun (masculine). What a union of opposites! Our lesson is about the wisdom of relating; of learning how to balance masculine and feminine, and the energies within and without.

In astrology, images are used to convey the essence of a sign. For Libra, that image is the scale, the symbol of balance. The religious history of the scales yields rich insights; it is the key that unlocks the door to Libran mysteries. Of Chaldean origin, the scales are linked to matters of fate and judgment. Indeed in ancient myths the scales are pictured at the critical juncture between life and death, just as the soul is about to pass into the next realm. In ancient Egypt, the soul was weighed against the weight of a feather. In the Persian tradition, the angel Rashu weighed souls at the Bridge of Fate, while in the Christian faith St. Michael, Archangel of the Day of Judgement, is pictured with a set of scales. And in ancient Greece, the goddess Themis, the embodiment of law, was represented with scales.

The scales are the ideal image for this month's New Moon. They capture the Scorpio themes of death and the afterlife. And they represent the balancing act required of each us in the delicate dance of relationship. The scales represent the process of weighing and measuring: the kind of introspection and overview we engage in at certain peak life moments. Have we over-emphasized our own agenda against the needs of others? Or, conversely, have we neglected our creative calling and life work because we are too busy compulsively caring for the needs of others? This ancient image carved into ancient Egyptian temples conveys a modern-day psychological truth: A psyche that tips too far in one direction or another is considered unhealthy, manic, or "bipolar." Physically, good health revolves around a lifestyle that includes equal portions of work and pleasure, exercise and rest, and a balanced diet. Mental equilibrium, homeostasis - these are healing qualities that regulate the human condition spiritually, psychologically, and physically.

So this New Moon, center yourself at the all-important fulcrum at the center of the scales. Weigh and measure. Be circumspect. See where you are out-of-balance. Exercise prudence regarding any kind of unconscious extremism, whether from within or without. Hold strong to the sanity provided by your spiritual faith.

For as it is taught in the Jewish tradition, the devil is rendered powerless against the good struck in the balance between the inner and the outer, and between self and other. Says the Dalai Lama, "...the practice of Dharma, real spiritual practice, is in some sense like a voltage stabilizer. The function of the stabilizer is to prevent irregular power surges and instead give you a stable and constant source of power."*

This way, each of us can become a powerful center of gravity. Radiating peaceful equilibrium, we are laying the foundation of peace and a wise world that, by our individual actions, we are helping to construct for future generations.

* The Art of Happiness, by the Dalai Lama.
