Reality
Making Sense of Your World
and How You Create It

by Jacquelyn Small
To say we manifest our reality by the way we think is not simply a “new age” platitude. It is an observable fact. And today, with science and spirituality befriending one another, our contemporary quantum physicists say it best. So let’s take a look at what we now know about how we truly create what we call “reality:”

All potential is contained within what theoretical physicist David Bohm calls the invisible “implicate order.” Yet, until something is actually explicated as a thought (as a particle, or a created “something”), it is still enfolded in the invisible world of Spirit (the wave function, or the vast Uncreated) where all potential resides as only a possibility, awaiting our recognition. It’s the attention we give to something and our focus on it that calls it out and real-izes it -- makes it real by giving it form.

All possibilities exist in the enfolded order of the still Uncreated. It’s the background of all or Absolute Reality, where formless energy constantly swirls. This is the wave function in subatomic particle/wave theory. So why do we choose to explicate what we do from all this potential? Let me go deeper with this, since this awareness is so crucial to our very quality of life.

Dr. Bohm demonstrates his theory with this experiment, which I was fortunate to see with my own eyes while studying at Esalen Institute in the ‘80’s: Put two concentric cylinders in a container, one inside the other with some space in between the two. The inner cylinder is fixed, while the outer one turns slowly in one direction. Fill the entire container with a viscous fluid like glycerin and put an ink drop into the fluid. As the outer cylinder begins turning, the droplet is drawn out into a finer and finer thread that gradually becomes invisible. Now, reverse the motion and the droplet will retrace its path until the ink drop emerges once again in tact.

In this same manner, we construct a series of thoughts that unfold/enfold like the ink drop does. Each idea we have formulates in our brain as a distinct thought. We’re manifesting particles out of the spinning wave function. Then, each explicated thought affects what we see and call “reality.” But it is always simply one possibility in the infinite invisible whole, the implicate order of Reality where everything vibrates as uncreated potential. In quantum physics, particles do not even show until someone looks through a microscope and observes them. Then, they explicate and split into two opposites – one spinning one way, one spinning the other. This is the basis of who we are at the subatomic level.

There is a cosmic law that says, “As above, so below.” So, you see, this implicate/explicate process is also happening constantly within your psyche; it’s what you choose to observe in life that becomes your reality. Physicist Fred Alan Wolf says we’ve been told “seeing is believing.” But he says it’s really the opposite: “Believe it and you’ll see it.” So again, the question: Since everything exists in potential, why do we choose to explicate what we do?

And here, I believe, is the reason: Most thoughts we hold in our minds arise from memory. We respond to the memory and make a thought that is based in some little piece of our past we’ve paid attention to, then stored. Often, what we remember is now outdated, or no longer useful. And some thoughts are founded in a complete misunderstanding. Your brain doesn’t know the difference between a memory and a current experience; it reacts exactly the same in either instance that causes the same emotion. A mechanical memorized set of thoughts that contain emotion can never be creative. So not only is this way of living in the past uncreative, it can be downright destructive and block our growth.

Many I meet today in Eupsychia’s program tell me they wish to create a new way of life. To be creative, then, capable of free thought, the question becomes: How do we get beyond being stuck in our memories? How do we learn to think in ways that are not conditioned by memory, but come from a fresh, here-and-now approach? If we could possibly empty our minds, creative inspirations could emerge. We’ve learned that creativity does not come from thinking, though it is an instrument that can express in thought. Creativity spontaneously manifests from moments of emptiness in the mind. It’s as though “Big Mind” can enter a human mind that is not already filled to the brim with stacks of old ideas from one’s past.

Research on how music affects our brains is helping us understand how music clears these dead thoughts from the mind. Music, from Beethoven to Pink Floyd, has the power to carve new neural pathways through our brains, at the intersection where memory and emotion converge. This is one of the most powerful aspects of our breathwork musical journeys we do in Eupsychia’s work. Today, we need more and more methods like this that can help us clear out our past, because these old thoughts are the basic reason humanity isn’t working! Now, make that a personal statement, and you’ll see that it’s your old thoughts that are the basic reason your life may not be working.

Your Human Psyche’s Sacred Purpose

Everything we ever conceptualize has to come into and through our psyches in order to be perceived. As I’m sure you realize, your psyche is your perceiver of reality. It is consciousness itself. Just as the goddess Psyche chose to fall from Mt. Olympus and become a human girl, we all stepped out of "the Garden" -- where, as God’s innocent children, all our thinking was done for us – and took on the grave responsibility of becoming conscious human individuals. As part of our Father’s plan for all His children, we had to “eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil” – meaning we needed to learn about duality, and how to decide for ourselves the difference between what is right and what is wrong. And in so doing, the human psyche was born. As Jean Houston so beautifully puts it: “Consciousness entered into time.”

And interestingly, even how we think of God can only be known through our own perception of God or of anything we decide to call “holy.” Carl Jung tells us “God has never spoken except in and through one’s psyche, whether it be experiences that originate within the psyche, or outer experiences or dogma that must be processed by the psyche.” This God- image we carry in our minds holds the central position of authority for us and can spontaneously burst upon the ego at any time, producing what we label a mystical, divine inner event, or a “living religious experience.” So frankly, no matter how lofty our thoughts or our experiences, nothing really resides outside our own perceptions of God or Reality. Think about it: This just has to be true.

Since we create by how we think, I’ve found that some thoughts help us have a better life. Here’s a way to think of who you are: Since “psyche” is a Greek word that means soul, you can think of your psyche as your individual soul who came here straight from Source to experience being fully human. Your soul is twinned, then, being both divine and human: When it "looks up" it relates to Spirit, and when it "looks down" it becomes an individual human psyche who takes on the worldly life in order to make it conscious. By making things conscious, because we are spiritual beings by nature, we materialize Spirit in this human world. God spiritualized matter; we materialize Spirit. Can you see divine co-creation at work here – the marriage of the human personality with its soul? As the link between Spirit and matter, our human psyche was created to do the work of our heavenly Parents. We’re here bringing Spirit from the abstract down into concrete Reality.

Now this is a serious responsibility. It’s no wonder we avoid knowing who we are for as long as we possibly can! Once you truly “get” this, your entire life is transformed, because your whole identity shifts into knowing you are someone much bigger than you thought you were. Your little personal insults become so much less significant than this Bigger Story you realize you are living.

This earth life we are experiencing has a very sacred purpose in the cosmos that we, as consciousness, are currently passing through. Evolution is a mystery that, as consciousness, we live, but will never really know much about intellectually. We just do it. We just are it, as this is apparently God’s plan. Even today’s physicists tell us no one knows where we are headed, or what this life of ours is truly all about. But today, scientists know there is something bigger than they can define that caused “the Big Bang” of creation to happen. Darwin was certainly part of it, but along with nature’s natural ways of evolving, there have also been quantum leaps in our long human history that cannot be explained.

What we do know is that we are here now for consciousness to experience being fully human and spiritualize it by our active and conscious participation in every part of our human life. This translates into bringing divine Love and Wisdom here. We are here to blossom the human kingdom, which is the fourth kingdom in nature (mineral, plant, animal, and now us). And we each must do this by blossoming our own whole Self.

So how are you doing with your holy job description? Where are you in your own blossoming as your true and uncontaminated Self? Are you still caught up in your little personal stories that hold you prisoner of your past? Or are you beginning to “get it” and remember who you really are, willing to take responsibility for any healing you may still require? I certainly can see that I’m still so easily capable of dropping into Self-forgetting! We really do need each other as reminders of our bigger Story, and we need spiritual practices and healing methods that can keep us living it.

Our world is in grave trouble now, living out of dead philosophies and old thoughts based solely on memory of the past, while our technology zooms toward creating instruments of complete annihilation. Anytime we fail to bring Spirit into all our human activities, we live in a "disconnect," lost to the true creative workings of our very being. We suffer, we fragment, and then we are lost. Look around in our troubled world today. What you’ll see are people still trying to live as separate, divided nations, cultures, families, and egos, trying to hopelessly win each argument or each war. We keep forgetting that we are all One Human Soul, heading “home” back to wholeness. On this Path of Return to our Source, the cosmic Law of Evolution will not allow this egoistic separatism to go on forever. Therefore, we must work with all our might to wake up and remember who and what we are and why we’ve come here. Our human lives truly depend on this now.

It’s time now us to accept the mantle of our destiny as demonstrators of the Divine, each in our own way. We don’t need to talk about it; we need to just do it. This is not an ego trip where we pat ourselves on the back and say, “Look at me!” This is our job as sons and daughters of our Creator. We must each become an undivided whole person now blossom as unique beings able to stand on our own in free and creative thought. And we each have a sphere of influence here in this world. So let’s use our influence now to raise consciousness in every way we can, beginning with our own.

“In living organisms…new forms of behavior
emerge at critical points. [They] exchange
their individualistic behavior for a collective one.”
-F. David Peat
