Getting Our Needs Met
|
|
 |
by Rev. David Ault |
|
|
Our two golden retrievers, Harper and Scout, sit somewhat patiently by my side as I type this. Every morning I take turns feeding each of them a handful of dog biscuits. It’s our established routine on the days I’m not traveling. It’s done, not as a reward for their outstanding behavior for they still haven’t mastered the ability to vacuum the landscape of fur shed over the hardwood floors or because they can pick up their toys after they have dismembered and shredded them to find the squeak inside, but it’s done simply because they are loved and valued. Their mere presence brings us so much joy and their expression of unconditional love is the stuff of pure mastery.
In a way, this routine is partly how they get their needs met.
They come to me looking for attention and sustenance and I happily give it to them. If I or my partner ever misses a morning, there is someone else there to fulfill their needs. And when the biscuit supply runs low, a trip to Costco is in order.
When we stop and think about our human needs, where or who do we individually go to for our attention and sustenance?
So much of our life’s energy seems spent on fulfilling those needs by looking outside ourselves. We frequently wind up going to places or people who seem ill-equipped to meet them. How often have we been disappointed by the unfulfilled expectations of another and yet travel back to that same barren terrain hoping to find some miraculous oasis?
The key factor is in remembering that it isn’t that they are really ill-equipped. It’s that it isn’t their job.
As human beings, the thing that sets us a part from other life forms is our consciousness, our intelligence, and our ability to choose what to do with it. So when we go about getting our needs met, the ability to do that rests, not outside of us, but within.
Because we are conscious beings, we must remind ourselves that it isn’t anyone else’s responsibility to meet our needs. It’s our own.
That quest for fulfillment does not have to always be some arduous, daunting, foreboding journey filled with cavernous potholes that leave us bloodied and scarred.
Everything that we need for a fulfilling, thriving life rests within the unconfined terrain of our ability and willingness to embody and allow it in. In other words we have the option to feed ourselves our own spiritual biscuits from a supply that never runs dry.
We have the option to create wellness in our lives by our willingness to allow focused thoughts of wellness and participate in wellness influenced activities.
We have the option to create thriving in our lives by our willingness to allow focused thoughts of thriving and to participate in thriving enriched activities.
We have the option to create peace in our lives by our willingness to allow focused thoughts of peace and to participate in peace-filled activities.
All our needs are already fulfilled.
Everything that we could ever imagine or desire has already been created.
And, these creations wait in a heightened expectancy of good to come jumping into form as soon as we release any and all resistance to their arrival.
In my experience, I’ve discovered three elements that are necessary in order to stay balanced, open and receptive to creating that sustained fulfillment.
1) Meditate there simply is no substitute for quieting the mind and thus allowing oneself to be able to hear their own intuition. This stillness provides unfailing direction on the who, when, where and how’s of life. So much of the struggle that we experience could be eliminated simply be committing to a communion with stillness. Through meditation, our eyes become sharper; our hearts become more in tune, our actions more filled with pure intent and our lives more authentic. Meditation is the essential road map for the journey of life.
2) Exercise move your body. Do something, anything to create the blood to flow through you and oxygenate your cells. Whatever your field of ability, you can start where you are and reawaken your cells to participate in a new, heightened dance of wellness. You must find joy in it. You must find a form of activity that creates a sensory awakening to a capability within you that has never died. In other words if you were able before, you’re still able now. Maybe the exact form will be different, but the ingredients for the recipe are all still in there. Move.
3) Tithe remember that you come from an infinite supply. The joy of giving to where one is spiritually fed fuels the cycle of infinite supply. As we give to those that inspire us, we inspire. As we give to those whose works we believe in, we enrich that work. As we give, we are given to because that is the way the Law of Circulation works. We give with joy, we expect with joy, we receive with joy; we give with joy…….
When you look at these three elements, they spell out the word MET. Our needs are met when we become still and listen. Our needs are met when we honor this physical temple called our body and our needs are met when we actively participate in the miraculous cycle of giving and receiving.
It’s a simple recipe for life and yet it is a recipe so rich and satisfying that one never hungers emotionally, spiritually or physically.
If you’d like your needs met, try using the recipe.

David Ault is highly regarded as one of the finest visionary vocalists and motivational speakers within the New Thought/transformational movement.
His focus on remembering the Divine within and reclaiming that connection has empowered hundreds of thousands on their spiritual journey. The union of Davids charismatic message and heartfelt singing has elevated him to guest speaker of choice in many nationwide churches and global organizations.
As a licensed minister and practitioner through Religious Science International, as well as author, songwriter/recording artist, David has traveled and shared his gifts for well over fifteen years.
Working closely with notables Louise Hay and Marianne Williamson and sharing the stage with many cherished mentors ranging from the late Og Mandino to Dr. Barbara King, Jerald Jampolsky, Elizabeth Kubler-Ross, Father Leo Booth and Mary Manin-Morrisey, David harvested that experience and developed his own unique style of teaching. His compassionate presence, warmth and humor continue to be an unforgettable guidepost for audiences as they rediscover and reawaken to their personal magnificence.
Starting out as a professional actor and singer, David worked extensively in Broadway tour shows, film and television winning critics awards in both New York and Los Angeles.
Throughout the 1980s, David, along with the late Jerry Florence and Keith Kimberlin made their mark in New thought history by helping pioneer an unexplored musical genrevisionary vocal music. Known as Alliance, their remarkable blend became legendary, helping establish them as one of the most successful vocal groups in the Spiritual recording field.
David continues this musical path with the release of his critically acclaimed recordings, The Healing Bridge, Travelin With The Angels, All Is Calm, All Is Bright, And Then It Is Morning, all distributed through his Los Angeles based organization, The Conscious Company. Now, his highly anticipated literary debut, Where Regret Cannot Find Me, is heralded as a fresh and exciting discovery in Spiritual literature ... a work of pure heart!
I feel extremely blessed and grateful in following this path, says David. It is my ongoing intention to create a message in word and music that assists us all in reawakening to our personal magnificence!
