Betrayal: A Sacred Agent
of Transformation
by Jacquelyn Small

When Destiny calls us to move on, often if we do not heed the call, something quite disastrous can happen to get our attention. The archetypal wound of Betrayal can stab us in the heart. Of all the woundings we take on, this one can be the most excruciating and difficult to integrate. When not fully understood, a betrayal can even cause us to lose faith in life or God, and cause us to become bitter and closed to new relationships.
Yet, when we awaken to its full power, we’ll see that Betrayal is one of the greatest agents of the sacred. Betrayal’s cosmic purpose is to lead us out of some primal unconscious trust or innocence. It will always end a chapter in your life and move you to the next step you could never take amidst the old conditions. This potent transformational tool so obsesses you, it will force you to seriously examine yourself all the way to your depths to see what your part in the Betrayal was. And usually, you will be quite content with yourself when you discover the only mistake you made was either loving or trusting too much. The archetype of Betrayal destroys innocence. It will not allow us to go through our lives unconsciously giving ourselves away to everyone or everything we become attracted to. It forces us to discriminate and learn to see people and things more clearly so we can match each person and situation with the truth of our being.
Anytime we feel a victim of anything, we’ve simply forgotten that we always draw to ourselves exactly what our soul knows that we need in order to mature. When a betrayal tears up your life, you can always look back and see how you had your part in setting up the circumstances for the betrayal. And usually, it’s just plain innocence. Whenever you place an overabundance of trust in someone else, the seeds of betrayal are sewn. No one can ever live up to our idealized version of them! In our soul’s life, there seems to be a form of spiritual blindness designed to deliberately prohibit us from seeing the bigger picture at times --- just so we will go deeply enough into the human suffering we’ve taken on as “our particular cross to bear.” Ponder on this for a moment, and I believe you will have a revelation. An easy life with no suffering has no depth. And we must remember, the soul came here to enter fully into this calamitous human condition in order to transform it.
This sacred wound faces us with the agonizing gap between the actual and the ideal -- where you are now and where you’d like to be. You’ll see an actual set of circumstances you’d like to get beyond, but you still lack the focus or ability to know how to proceed. This is the desperation that haunts us when we become aware that we are not living up to our full potential. If we did not suffer this angst, we would never be motivated to press on. The loss of primitive, immature attachments enables us to enter into life with more insights and knowings than we’d ever been able to assimilate before. It permits the entry of a higher, more fulfilling way to live.
