Dear Caroline,
I read your columns every month and find them really interesting. Every winter, I suffer from a mild depression nothing that needs to be medically treated but enough to take the spring out of my step. I wonder if this could be related to a lack of light at this time of year.
Ruth, Chicago, Ill
Dear Ruth,
The symptoms that you are referring to could be related to Seasonal Affected Disorder or lack of light. As soon as fall and winter sets in to many parts of the world, people can become depressed or adversely affected in terms of mood and energy because of the lack of natural light. This lack of sunlight affects the pineal gland, one of the major endocrine glands, located in the head. The pineal gland is involved in hormone function, energy and mood regulation. If Seasonal Affected Disorder, or S.A.D. is a factor, you could certainly be experiencing mild depression as a result. As yet this syndrome is not well recognized and often the treatments can be complicated, time-consuming, and expensive like sitting under banks of full-spectrum light at certain times of the day.
Many years ago, a skilled group of alternative practitioners that I know discovered an inexpensive way of treating S.A.D.
Take an ordinary pocket flashlight. When you get into bed at night, turn on the flashlight and hold it on the center of your forehead for about three minutes. In this process, you are effectively flooding your brain cavity with this powerful light. Repeat this simple procedure every night before sleeping and every morning upon waking for approximately three weeks, and then once or twice a week after that. It won’t take long before you will notice an improvement in energy and mood.
On a higher level, lack of light refers to letting in the "light" on a physical and spiritual level. Let the light of spirit shine into your life through meditation and spiritual practice. Is there an issue where you could be more enlightened or gain another perspective? Perhaps it is time to "lighten" a burden or let go of something or someone that is no longer supportive to your growth.
With these concepts in mind, when you use the simple flashlight procedure that I have described, I find it is even more effective if you repeat a positive affirmation such as: I am healthy and balanced; I am whole, complete and healthy or see yourself in a healthy setting in a rose garden, on a beach or mountain top breathing in fresh air and sunshine.
Dear Caroline,
I have suffered from a horrible past. I just can’t seem to get over the fact that I was so severely mistreated and abused in my childhood. Even though I understand the concept of forgiveness mentally, I just can’t seem to bring it down to the heart level and really release it. I feel as if this has just gone on for way too long. What is your intuitive perspective on how to move forward?
Mary L. Anacortes, Washington
Dear Mary,
You are not alone in your desire to forgive. Many people come to me struggling with severe health issues which stem from the stored memories of unhappy childhoods. The memory of the painful experience is locked in the cells and every year and with every thought it magnifies.
Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we all had very happy childhoods? And many of us did. A brother and sister in the same family would probably have quite different perspectives of the same experience. The perspective of a child would be quite different from an adult who might be able to view the situation from a wiser more mature perspective.
In my own life, I have found the following exercise to be very useful. If the mind can grasp a concept, the heart can embody it.
A few years ago, I was fortunate to attend a workshop given by Ron Roth, author of the book Prayer and the Five Stages of Healing, (Hay House, 1999).
Ron is a spiritual teacher and healer as well as a former Roman Catholic priest. During the course of the afternoon, Ron led workshop participants in a forgiveness meditation. The sweetness of his words pervaded the room.
"Forgiveness," he said, "means to give forth. Give forth what what do we want to give forth?" he continued. "We want to give forth blessings so that we can feel the same blessings in return."
This was a profound and new concept for me. Somehow I heard this concept for the first time. When we forgive and bless a person or a situation with our thoughts and in our hearts, then we are forgiven and blessed in turn. In a circle, we forgive and good returns to us.
When we can reach this deep state of forgiveness at a core level, our bodies begin to heal and we are filled with new energy. The simple concept of forgiveness eludes us and yet it is so tied into physical body health.
When we cannot accept a situation or forgive an aspect of our past, these memories stay locked within us at a cellular level. And the same mental program keeps running the same script over and over again so that our bodies continually reflect the mental food that it is being fed. If we could reach for the higher wisdom and allow life to flow through us, rather than allow life to be trapped within us, we would experience vibrant health.
Many years ago, I created a CD "Letting Go of the Past and Moving Forward" to address this very problem. To date it has helped thousands of people around the world and has given them the courage to let go.
A great phrase, which was given to me by a chiropractor friend and mentor, sums up this dilemma. And you set it up that way, is a phrase that speaks volumes about the nature of our not so innocent involvement in all of life’s experiences. When things are rough, we need to remember that a part of us "set things up" this way - set up or chose the conditions on a spiritual and soul level, for our growth and learning.
This thought is a conceptual stretch, but it turns the responsibility for the events, choices and even people in our lives, right back to the center to us.
When we fully embody this important concept, there is no blame. The truth is that everything in our lives is a mirror or a reflection of what is going on within.
