Astrologer's Notes:

What’s Up With Britney Spears?

by Basil Fearrington
It was just a few years ago when Britney Spears was tearing it up in the music business with phenomenal success as she filled stadium after stadium around the world. Working less than a third of the years that, say, Janet Jackson has worked, she amassed the kind of fortune that most singers can only dream about. She is the eighth best selling female artist in the history of music, certainly a tribute to her charisma as opposed to her singing skills.

In recent times, Britney’s life has been under much scrutiny. There was her quickie marriage and divorce in Vegas to a friend, followed by her marriage to backup dancer, Kevin Federline. There were the episodes where she was seen driving her child without properly protecting the child. And then she went on a party binge after the separation from Federline. Since their separation, she has been on a constant tear of bad publicity for one thing or another. When she shaved her head and went into a rehabilitation center for her problems with alcohol, it appeared as though she had finally lost it and was/is in deep trouble.

As one who has played with and or recorded for many, many recognized artists, I have seen up close how these artists sometimes “scam” the media in order to serve one purpose or another. For example, I went to Japan with a very well known, Grammy winning singer some years ago. Although I have been to Japan over a dozen times, this was my first time going there. The trip to Japan takes approximately 14 hours from New York. Back then, your 14 hour trip was followed by an exhausting wait through Customs and a near three hour trip from the airport into downtown Tokyo because there was a single road with one lane of traffic in both directions that had a toll booth midway. It was a very tough trip.

We were just about an hour from landing in Tokyo when this singer fell out in the aisle. I was quick to get up to assist until one of the other band members senior to me grabbed me by the wrist and said, “There is no blood. Don’t worry about it. You’ll see.”

When we landed in Tokyo, there was an ambulance and a helicopter waiting. By the time we arrived at the hotel some four hours later, this singer was sitting in the coffee shop of the hotel having a meal as if nothing had happened! The whole thing had been staged just to avoid going through Customs and taking the ride! This incident made the news for days to come in Japan but it was only the band members who knew what really happened. The media had been manipulated by a star performer. So when I see the media stories about this or that artist, I always wonder if the media is manipulating the artist or vice-versa.

In the case of Britney Spears, all that we have been seen and told certainly gives reason to think that something is amiss. Does her horoscope give us any clues?

The Horoscope

One of the things that motivated me to collect horoscopes when I first started was that I wanted to see if there was a signature for success shown in the horoscopes of those who had excelled in their careers to a point of national or international recognition. When I learned of the kind of numbers Britney Spears was posting (record sales and concert gross), I wrote to her office to get birth information. The data that I got from her office is December 2, 1981 at 1:29 AM in Mahon, Mississippi.

Before even getting into a heavy analysis, the first thing that you see is the hemisphere emphasis north/east. This is the classic orientation that merges early home concerns with defensiveness, self-protection and often a deep sense of insecurity that has much to do with the defensiveness. This first impression forms the foundation for everything else that exists in this horoscope.

When we see this kind of hemispheric emphasis, we should always look for corroboration of the early home concerns. Here, we see that Saturn, ruler of IV, applies to what can be a very difficult conjunction to Pluto, ruler of II, which is exactly square Venus, ruler of the Ascendant and VIII. This ties together Houses I-II-IV and VIII and it suggests a lot. There is a suggestion of identity tension (ruler of the Ascendant) that has formed as a result of a parent or the early home situation (IV) that also has an effect on the sense of self esteem (II) in terms of how she feels about herself and how she works with the esteem profiles of others (VIII). While the Pluto contact to Venus is an astrological symbolism for prominence (Pluto contacts, especially to the Angles or rulers of the Angles), its emphatic nature operating on the Ascendant ruler suggests the potential of substantial identity concerns that spill over into and include (naturally) self worth concerns. In addition, Venus conjoins the Nodal Axis, suggesting a rather pleasant maternal influence in support of her identity and upon relationships.

The horoscope suggests that there is a weakness in the area of relationships, seen through Neptune’s square to Mars, ruler of VII, as well as the Saturn-Pluto conjunction squaring her Venus. In fact, the horoscope is dominated by the Mutual Reception between Venus and Saturn, corroborating and highlighting the importance of the Ascendant, and the II-VIII axis so we see a great deal of her identity awareness tied into relationships, their difficulties and how it all manifests in her in terms of self worth. Venus in Capricorn is a position that can typically delay relational maturity. In this case, the “maturity” factor and the lessons to be learned are quite emphatic. We can deduce that many mistakes will be made in relationships before she finally matures. We’ve already seen this in the making.

The Sun-Moon blend of Sagittarius/Aquarius is one in which the core fiery idealism expresses through a personality that needs to be unique, humanitarian and/or socially significant. Quickly, we see Mercury at the midpoint of Sun/Uranus in House III, suggesting an idealistic mindset that needs to be erratic, innovative, unusual or rebellious. Neptune’s position there adds idealism to the mix. With Mercury’s rulership of IX, we see the 3-9 axes being heavily accentuated. Anytime you see this in any horoscope, the way the person thinks or the things they say will tend to be of great benefit or of great harm (two people come to mind where this is true; Rosie O’Donnell and Rush Limbaugh). What we see here is a radical mindset that is easily prone to eccentrics, impulse, and offbeat ways of thinking. Added to this is Pluto=Jup/Sat=Mars/Ura, suggesting an intense need to go out of the way to prove a point that couples with temperamental explosions. The image of the nice girl next door is only an image.

The Sexual Profile

Anytime Uranus is the ruler of V, we expect the sexual profile to be in high gear unless there are indications that suggest that it is being held in check, is repressed, etc. The Moon in V applies to a trine to Saturn and relates smoothly to the Sun. There is no tension involved with the 5th House. There are no “blocks” in expression of sexuality.

We have seen that Venus is exactly squared by Pluto. Pluto’s influence is one of extremes. When it makes hard aspect contact to another planet, it magnifies the symbolism of that planet to its extreme. Regarding Venus, Pluto’s contact brings the sense of extremism to everything that is sexual, social and romantic. Because the basic sexual identity is shown to be free from tension, we must assume that the Pluto-Venus contact further magnifies what is surely high gear sexuality. This is firmly corroborated by the midpoint picture, Sun=Venus/Pluto, which suggests an illumination of sexual/romantic extremes, probably to a point of being out of hand. As well, Uranus=Venus/Asc and Asc=Sun/Venus add an intensification of charm and attractiveness that make it easy for her to attract others. This certainly plays a role in her being easily marketable in public.

Britney Spears’ sexual profile is highly emphasized. When you couple this need with erratic thinking and a weakness in the area of relationships, mistakes are going to be made motivated by her libido. The horoscope suggests that all of this is helping to recoup something that may have been lost or that never existed in her formative years of development. It is psychology 101.

The Future

The year 2006 was quite an active one in Britney’s horoscope as well as in her life. Most of this erratic behavior and relationship difficulties were reflected in the horoscope by the transit of Uranus square the Sun. That aside, there is a laundry list of emphatic measurements in 2006 that paved the way for what we are seeing now in 2007. They include transiting Pluto square Mars (ruler of VII); SA Sun=MC, which usually illuminates the career but went by without a manifestation in this case; SA ASC=Mars/Ura (temper tantrums; erratic behavior); transiting Saturn square Venus (relationship concerns); transiting Saturn square Pluto (loss and difficulties); SP Moon crossed the Nadir and most importantly, she had a progressed New Moon, one of the two most important points in one’s life cycle. It is a time when new seeds are planted for development throughout the next 14 years. We must look carefully at the next two years to see how those seeds begin to sprout and that will give us a good idea of the direction Britney will take.

In my practice, I really simplify the process of projecting into the future. I look to see if Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, or Pluto will conjoin or square an Angle, the Sun or Moon by conjunction or square, transit or arc. Added to these are arcs involving the Sun, Venus, and Jupiter. This tells me whether or not there is a likelihood of any life-changing events. If there are no life-changing events indicated, the chances are high that nothing in life will deviate much from where and what it is now. There is no need to pay attention to every aspect in existence. It will only cloud your thinking.

As I look ahead in Britney’s horoscope for something major and powerful, all roads point to 2008 with SA MC=Jupiter. For a career person or an ambitious person, the arcs of Jupiter to the Midheaven or the Midheaven to Jupiter are often high points in the career. It overlaps ASC=Jupiter! Should she decide to get back on track with her career in music, the period late in 2008 into 2009 should be a high point.

Right now, exact this month, Britney has SP Moon square Saturn, always an important time of planning and development for a career oriented person. It is usually a time when one’s personal needs and the life reality are at odds. One has to do something; one has to make changes and make things happen. With SA Mars=Saturn, this process might be difficult and I would expect a flare-up with a parent that becomes public. However, Jupiter transits her Sun twice more this year, overlapping SP Moon conjunct Venus. These are far from being scary measurements until you consider the depressive potential of transiting Saturn square Mercury. All in all, there is nothing astrological that suggests that things are going to go further downhill in the life of Britney Spears. I think that what has happened is a bump in the road that will teach important lessons. However, in the process, she may have made it very difficult for her career to return to where it was because much of her success was based upon the projection of an image that has since been destroyed. But all it could take is a hit record and with the upcoming MC-Jupiter measurement, the potential for that big hit is great. At the end of the day, I think the best place for Britney is to take her wealth and prominence to a place in society where she can use it for social and humanitarian ends. I doubt that she will have a long career as a recording artist.

By the way, if you are interested in the signature of success in Britney’s horoscope, first consult the archives of this web site to see if my essay on, “The Signatures of Success and Prominence in the Horoscope,” is still there. That shows you the basics of what to look for. It has to do with the planets Jupiter, Pluto and the Jupiter/Pluto midpoint, none of which Britney has active. However, I have found that there are pairs of midpoints that, when on the same axis, have the same kind of effect as the measurements listed in the essay. In this case, Sun/Pluto=Mercury/Jupiter=MC/ASC=Sun/Jupiter is the signature. Power, communication and success potential all center on the spine of the horoscope in the MC/ASC axis.
