Animal Insights:
The greatest gift you can give your wonderful pets year-round.
|

People often indulge their pets in toys, strollers, new toys and articles of apparel. I am just as guilty of these indulgences as anybody else! Our three dogs and one cat all received little goodies at Christmas, as did the wild birds who frequent our feeders on their yearly migrations South. This year I visited a nature store close by and got a special feeder that holds niger seed which is considered quite a delicacy by some of the birds going to their winter homes. So far, not bird has visited it, but I am still hopeful of colorful visitors soon!
I want to share with you the greatest gift you can give your wonderful pets year-round. For them to be healthy and happy, we need to lead a harmonious, healthy and balanced life ourselves. Our animals are really reflections of ourselves. We choose them, on some level, to bring certain qualities we yearn for into our daily lives. Sometimes this is on a conscious level, sometimes not. Have you ever noticed while visiting someone's home, it is usually easy to spot similarities in the personalities of the resident animals and their human counterparts?
Because our animal's love us so completely and desire to make us happy, they often times take on our own imbalances and the overloads of our daily "stuff." If your pet is feeling anxious or insecure, perhaps you need to take a look at your own life and schedules and see where perhaps things have gotten out of hand.
I have worked with hundreds of animals who are having health or behavior problems. Upon talking to the owner, I often find that the owner is having similar physical symptoms or diseases. Our pets are like sponges, absorbing our worries, fears and problems, usually without our awareness or understanding of the causal factors related to their behavior or health. Please let me reassure that this is NOT always the case, but happens more often than you realize!
How are you taking care of yourself? Are you taking time out of your busy day for meditation, praying or centering yourself? By making time for yourself you are also doing your pet a tremendous favor. I have clients who meditate or engage in reflective type activities and most of them say when they are being quiet and still, their pets will come and sit or lie very close to them. Animals are very sensitive to our moods and energy field and will seek us out when we are calm and at peace.
Flower Essences such as Rescue Remedy or Pink Yarrow can help eliminate stress and help prevent your animals from taking on your issues and concerns...important for their well-being!
Talk to your animals! Tell them what is going on with you and how much you love them. They are such good listeners and never make judgments or tell secrets. They like to feel loved and supported too. Take time to exercise together if that is appropriate for your pet. Neither we or our animals get enough exercise these days. It is a wonderful, interactive way to connect with your pet. You will both be more relaxed afterwards.
We can also let our animals be who they truly are. There is always a mystery to them that we will never be completely able to understand. By allowing them to be who they are, accepting their imperfections and mistakes, we let their spirit feel safe and nurtured. They are who they are and it is perfectly OK with us.
In closing, the gift of yourself spent in quiet time, loving your wonderful, beautiful animals, being totally at peace with them is the best investment in your pet that you can ever make -- for both of you.
