Aries New Moon:
Do Yourself
By Dana Gerhardt
If you bring forth what is within you,
What you bring forth will save you.
If you do not bring forth what is within you,
What you do not bring forth will destroy you.
The Gospel of Thomas, Verse 70
Who are you? What are you here to do? These are essential Aries questions. Quiet contemplation won’t provide the answers. Every zodiac sign, says Dane Rudhyar, is a reaction against the extremes of its preceding sign. Aries yanks us back from the blissed-out precipice of Pisces, where a book of poetry, a shaker of martinis, or a meditation cushion is all we need to reach another realm. With Aries, our doing makes the journey. This cycle you must get into motion. In other words, do yourself as though you were a verb.
I did not understand this until I relinquished my dislike of Aries people. Zodiac aversions arise when, out of the countless people you find annoying, you discover two or three share the same sign. This entitles you to roll your eyes and look knowingly whenever that sign is mentioneduntil, as a spiritual person, you learn that everyone you dislike is a reflection of yourself. You resolve to appreciate that sign’s virtues, but keep coming up with more reasons to dislike it. Then one day you stumble across the thing you can’t do, and you realize those fill-in-the-blank-zodiac people can do it without a second thought.
My mother is an Aries. My boyfriend is an Aries. That co-worker I tangled with in 1991 was an Aries too. Despite their sunny, inspiring nature and boundless enthusiasm, I’ve found Aries people can be rough and recklessStanley Kowalski brutes to my faint-hearted Blanche DuBois. Their ruling planet Mars connects them to their passions, so they compete, strike, and leap without being braked by thought. I prefer to say I’d like to do something for months, even years before I do it (if I do it). I like to think about my actions, have discussions with friends in town, imagine strategies, consider the consequences, fantasize rewards. But Aries people will just go off and do it. They’ll even skip the conversations with friends. (This is what makes them chaotic and unpredictable.)
But the Sun has been in Aries the past few weeks. And something new got into me. I have a writing project that has been languishing for months. One day I woke up two hours earlier and just started writing. I had no plan. I simply showed up at my computer and started doing. Four days later, I had the entire project designed. I was delighted, of course, but also amazed at the creativity that had been inside of me, waiting to come out. Ah, so that’s what it means to discover yourself through actionthe Aries way! It’s no different than the lush new life bursting in my garden. I am emerging. Like my fragrant lilacs and Daphne blooms, I can’t see what I’m becoming. I can only become it.
Since last September, our New Moons have been in the final degrees of each sign, bringing a potent momentum as the New Moon arrives. Perhaps you’ve already caught Aries’ enthusiasm. Maybe you’ve started an important something. With empowering Pluto in favorable aspect to this New Moon, you’re encouraged to keep goingtake it to the next level. Soon the Sun will enter Taurus, bringing energy to ground and stabilize your efforts. Still this is the Aries cycle. That means you’ve got certain obligations. You must honor the life force running up and down your spine. As the great choreographer Martha Graham so eloquently said:
There is a vitality, a life force, an energy, a quickening that is translated through you into action. And because there is only one of you in all time, this expression is unique. And if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium, and be lost. The world will not have it. It is not your business to determine how good it is, or how valuable, or how it compares with other expressions. It is your business to keep the channel open. You have to keep open and aware directly to the urges that actuate you. Keep the channel open.
Understand that you are a verbwhose action is necessary to the world. Why fear dancing it into expression? If you can’t find pleasure in doing your life, who else will? Enjoy the life force quickening within you, urging you toward something only you can do. At the Aries New Moon, keep the channel open!
