Spiritual Mastery for the 21st Century

Living Gracefully Within
The Contradictions

by Dr. Gwen MacGregor
“It is now for you to reevaluate your emotions and come to a new understanding of the nature and the purpose of the energies that you experience. Love is your key to finding Peace. ...There is infallible guidance available to you through the door of purified emotion.”

- The Dragon Doesn’t Live Here Anymore by Alan Cohen

I recently completed a Master’s Course Intensive in Transpersonal Hypnotherapy and was not surprised to realize that I learned as much from the journey itself as I did from the class! Isn’t it always the way that the teacher(s) find you when it is your time to play? The five day intensive was located in Warm Springs, Va, a rustic town of stark beauty and heavenly springs. My objective, besides completing this leg of the course work, was to have some down time for myself up in the mountains, breathing clean air and sleeping like a baby at night. Just when you think you are in charge of your own destiny, God...

On arriving the night before the seminar, I discovered a moldy room (I am asthmatic), with little or no heat and a leaking bathroom sink. All the other students and teachers were staying at this same place. Upon asking for another heater - the heater in the room was broken, the landlord gave me a new heater which took hours to warm up to 64 degrees by morning and a towel to put under the sink for the night. He was rude, said it felt warm enough to him and told me if I did not like it, I could go out, at 9pm at night, to find another room. Keep in mind the winds, the winter and the cold was below 20 degrees when I arrived. I told him that I would let him know about checking out the next day. I agonized about my decision to check-out of the hotel because my instructors were staying here and had encouraged all of us to do so. By morning, it was clear to me to move on to the next inn. What a lesson that became for me...

The inn I moved to dates back to 1770 and stands on the original land of a grist mill. The briskly moving stream under my window runs straight from the baths at Warm Springs. This new landlord and room were as bright and shiny as the other was abusive. I checked in quickly and went back to get my refund and start classes. The former landlord was incensed that I chose to move and actually threw my money at me. Keep in mind I had to come to classes here all week. He screamed that I was never welcome as a guest again. He knew that he could not

throw me out of the building but, was unpleasant for the rest of the week. The landlord set the tone for about everyone else we were to meet in Warm Springs. The irony of such a metaphysical event being held in such a rigorously, restrictive religious area hit me early. The landlord ,while not a born again believer, was every bit a zealot as his local counterparts. I know you think me long-winded here but, I needed to set the stage for the week to come.

We began our classes with a great clearing meditation and I proceeded to let the landlord and his conflict with me, go. It was a delightful gathering of like-minded people who were masters’ in their own right. We soared with our discoveries and walked around in clouds of light and love for hours interacting with Past-Life Regressions, which were often emotionally healing and phenomenal. The outside world was beautiful and we were all ready for it when we met at The Grist Mill Inn for dinner. And once again, the contradictions of life began our higher lessons.

You know city folk just don’t look and talk like the locals! That was our first observation. While we ordered drinks, we were speaking about earth ceremonies and wiccan lore. I felt a prickle go up my spine and one of the ladies who was facing me gave me a raised eyebrow of warning. The family behind us was listening intently to our conversation. If burning at the stake had been on the dinner menu, we all would be toast right now. The looks of intolerance, no hatred, were downright scary. No matter how polite we were, our waitress wouldn’t break a smile and the atmosphere became frostier and frostier. We were at a loss as to how to remedy our presence with the locals. We decided as a group to send out more love, leave nice tips and go somewhere else to eat the next evening.

Now, back to my inn and my glorious room. I traded discomfort for warmth and beauty but, two hours after getting to sleep, I was awakened by a “pressure” on the other side of my door. It seems the Inn is quite haunted. I lovingly asked all the spirits to go on to bed and the light for I was not going to lose sleep tonight. They seemed as a group to recognize my authority in the matter and moved off. No sooner did I turn off the light, when I realized that a man was standing next to the right side of my bed staring at me. He was dressed in a black suit and white shirt with a black, thin tie and his clothes placed him around the 1840's. His eyes were black and very ugly. How he was able to slip through my shields, I still do not know but, my guess is that I was too sweet with the others and did not effectively shield myself against him. I had to send him away twice before I was sure he was gone.

Now, to the metaphysical realities of the trip and the lessons being brought forward. I re-learned the necessity to shield myself, the mind and body, once again using the white light of God as a standard protection against that which wishes to erode our faith and belief in better things. I was lulled into a false sense of security by the beauty of the area but, should have noticed how underdeveloped and stark the landscape felt, in reality. Just as you must look around for safety sake when you get out of your car late at night, so must you be spiritually and physically aware of your surroundings when you march off to join the other soldiers of the light. Intrinsic within the trip itself was a call to the front lines where human reality and the hope of the ages, meets. I do not wish to paint the group around me as better than those we met. That isn’t the case. We were asked to be the lesson-learners. To receive the lessons of tolerance, both religious and on any other level and practice our light work in hostile territory. No one ever said spreading the light was a 24-hour a day joyful experience. But, the joys we found in each other were profound enough to be worth the weight of the other lessons we met.

The week continued along the same lines. Our therapy sessions with one another as well as in class were life-altering for most of us. Evenings presented different challenges for all of us despite the fact that the meals themselves were excellent. On our last evening we went back to the first restaurant as if we were compelled to return for a final exam. This was our third time back and our waitress actually smiled at us. We found ourselves seated in a beautiful window overlooking the mill stream and, all through dinner we watched a lunar eclipse take place. This inn of comfort and sustenance actually became a place of warmth at the end, showering us with great food and the company of light-minded travelers. Somehow we found tables of strangers around us smiling with us. We became the grist for the mill. What a transformation from the beginning of the week?

So, my question to you dear reader is, “Who really suffered the transformation and became meek?” Not meek in the way of frightened but, meek as in innocent, non-threatening and letting go of fear and the need for retribution. We did, of course. This is how I imagine Jesus appeared to the travelers at Emmaus. As a lesson plan, a possible gift of great light and hope but, most probably as a living example of how we can alter our reality every day by stepping out of the contradictions of our desires and accepting the path of enlightenment. We allowed our light to shine upon everyone we met, despite their disdain and dislike, and received the gift of the changing face of the Mother God in the eclipse. I would say that we received a passing grade.

Oh and by the way, the warm springs themselves were located directly across the street from our school room. The springs were frequented by Thomas Jefferson himself. The lessons of freedom or free will in action are always intertwined with Mother Earth. The foul smell of sulphur which was given off by the springs themselves became a great baptismal pool for many of the travelers on the road to enlightenment that week. Once again, we march through the vapors of hell to find the comfort of the Mother waiting for us. Life as metaphor or just life?

Much joy to you on your travels,

Dr. Gwen G. MacGregor
