Tarot: Gigi Miner's Ethyrial Tarot
Dark & Light vs
Wrong & Right

Intriguing title, is it not? Anyone who has read my articles for a time will know that I am up to something. But, then again, I always am up to something.
A subject that wafted through my brain today was that of dark and light, or the subject perhaps better known as “shadow work”. The theory is that when we suppress those things that society has brainwashed us to believe are wrong, we stuff them down into the darkness and work very hard to keep them there. Now, the rub is that these “dark” things are not usually submissive and quiet. When ignored for too long, they have a tendency to make an appearance at the most inopportune times. This is usually with full audience available to see the explosion. Sorry, that is just how this kind of stuff likes to work.

Our card this month is the Temperance card from the Ethyrial Tarot ©. We see black and white, brain and heart, along with the tarot symbols, all separated by a distinctive line. That is, except for that part where they all seem to want to swirl together in the middle. Traditionally, the Temperance card is shown with an angel pouring liquid from one container to another. This depicts the mixing of things that sometimes do not normally mix. I always think of chemistry when I see that portrayal. I think of the mixing of elements and compounds that can at one point cure cancer and at the next blow up the planet. My thoughts are nothing if not dramatic.
The Ethyrial Tarot © version of the card seems to bring to mind the former subject for me a bit better. Our shadow self is that which we have been trained to think of as “bad” or “dirty”. One of my favorite subjects with which to play is sex. Yes, the pun is perfectly okay by me. This United States carries the roots of the puritans. We look at sex as simply for procreation. Enjoying sex means that you are either male or a slut. Admit it; if you are doing it correctly, sex is fun. Not only is it fun, but it is healthy. There is all kinds of information out there to tell you how sex keeps your heart strong. It heals the body. It chases away depression. It aids in sleep. If we want to look at our traditional Temperance card and discuss chemistry, sex is loaded with that too. The main reason that I am using it as an example is that it elicits such strong reactions.
If a person were inclined toward bondage, as an example, much of society would deem them “kinky” or otherwise abhorrent. Somewhere along the line, we have drawn these arbitrary lines in the sand saying that you cannot cross it lest you be labeled “wrong”. When society creates such labels, there will be those that suppress every inclination that they have in order to fit in. Then there will be others that will follow that alternate path simply to protest the mores put in place. Imagine if there were no such lines. Nothing is considered dirty or wrong. The only line is that of another person. You cannot hurt someone else. Anyone who wishes to play with you of his or her own free will is welcome, but the only rule is to do no harm. Now, with that idea in mind, if you knew that no one would judge you and you could not get into trouble, what would you do?
Sex is only one example. I use it because it has the biggest emotional bang for this particular buck. We all have fantasies. Most of us will never indulge such fantasies simply because we are afraid that our partner might think ill of us. So, we push that urge down into the dark recesses of our soul. There, it becomes annoyed. Consider King Kong left without Faye Raye. Eventually he gets teed off and goes on a destruction spree. Our shadow side is no different.
Stepping away from sex for a moment, consider someone who has a temper. This poor soul has been told all of his or her life that anger is bad. Thus, this person spends all of his or her time trying to repress that temper. Can you guess what usually happens? Sooner or later that temper is going to act like a volcano with a cork. The pressure will build until it explodes and the damage done is far worse than had it simply been allowed a safe outlet. For our hotheaded person, exercise is a great way to burn off that energy. Guess what? Sex is great for that too. The pressure has to go somewhere and if you do not give it a place to go, it will choose its own path.
There is nothing wrong with anger. Anger is an emotion that can actually create some excellent doors in one’s life. A mild mannered individual might put up with the same ol’ garbage day in and day out in their job. The person who gets angry might go out and find the dream job rather than put up with the doormat treatment. It is perspective. Thus, how we handle our shadow selves is more important than trying to hide who and what we are. In fact, I will go a step further and issue the declaration that if we were allowed to be whom we were born to be, the shadow would not even be an issue. Someone who loves sex could find other like-minded people and enjoy that part of themselves. Our person who has a strong anger response could organize others to make a difference in this world. Were we all to be able to live our lives out in the open, there would be so many more happy people wandering about.
Each of us has our own set of “bad” things. Someone has placed in our brains the idea that something about us is wrong. Tarot is an excellent tool to help you work out these things. Face it, if we are busy pushing something down and out of sight, we may have forgotten what it looked like when it was up here with us. Our subconscious is very good at revealing those buried treasures. And, yes, I consider them to be potential treasure. Just because someone else labeled it as wrong does not mean that it is. For them, it may be, but for you, it need not follow that label. Each of us is as we are for a reason. Yes, there could be bits that are warped and misshapen due to various trauma in our lives. But, we are not discussing a psychology session. We are talking about things that someone else decided were bad or wrong. Do not assume that your predilections are evil. So long as what you do does not harm or cross the line of another being, there is nothing wrong with it.
Anger only becomes wrong if it hurts someone else in its venting. Sex is only wrong if it violates another’s free will. On their own, they are both valuable things. I know that someone reading this will wonder if his or her particular “bad” thing is the exception to this. There is only one way to find out. Take it out and look at it. You might be surprised how harmless that blanket looks in the light in spite of it appearing to be a monster in the dark. It is only a monster so long as it is kept from your clear sight.
Take a moment and look at our card again. Where is your darkness and light? What have you been hiding because someone else told you that it was wrong? It takes some time and work to get past those labels. They tend to use some kind of superglue to keep them attached to us. Even the most stubborn label will come off if you work at it long enough. There is something deep down inside you that has been hidden for a long time. Find a safe space and face it. Find out what it is, discover what a gift it can be if it were only allowed to come out and play and make it a part of your everyday self. You may be amazed at what treasures lie buried within you.

Gigi Miner is a minister, ordained by the Universal Life Church, and has a Doctorate of Motivation from the same.
“One of the greatest benefits of Tarot is being able to take control of your life rather then be a victim of it,” is the motto of this professional Tarot consultant, author, and teacher, from upstate New York.
Moonlighting as an adult education instructor, Gigi brings that experience into her Tarot and writing work, helping clients and readers to find their own inner wisdom. Gigi has taught classes on tarot in regular and e-formats.
Believing that "laughter is the best medicine,” there is often a lighter tone to her teachings. When conducting an adult-education class, one of the main questions she asks is, "Are you having fun?” If the answer is "yes" then she knows that her students are learning more then if she were teaching in a more traditional mode.
Gigi has written articles for various newsletters, including Tarot Celebrations, World Tarot Network, and Gateway to Tarot. She has released a book entitled, “Light-of-Day Tarot & Dream Work,” which is available at www.lulu.com/ladyfogg.
Her two novels, "Card Shark" & "The Fallen" are available at all online bookstores or by visiting:
