The Holistic Mystic:

Enlightenment and Evil

by Lonny Brown, HHc.
One does not become enlightened by imagining figures of light, but by making the darkness conscious. - Carl Jung

On the challenging path to complete spiritual liberation, the enlarging vista of awakening mind eventually meets that which would tend to make one recoil. We mistrust enemies, carry grudges and generally draw the line when it comes to forgiving the really bad people. How could you be ONE with your tyrannical boss, or your oppressive mother-in-law, or worse - the evil degenerates who rob and rape and murder and generally destroy all that is good in life? We feel outraged, insulted, indignant, resentful.

Such moments of intense negativity are great opportunities for awakening, through the transcendence of ego and the transformation of hatred. The channeled spirit Emmanuel calls it “the choice for love.”

By “love,” we do not mean a blind naïve forbearance which perpetuates the transgressions of others. While “taking offense” defines you as victim, and empowers the offender, forgiveness doesn't require passively contributing to the delinquency of the perpetrator. Love is proactive, not a resignation to cruelty and injustice.

Consult your conscience. Face your karma with enemies, rivals, competitors. Examine your heart and find your contribution to the problem and pain. It is not easy to get free of the past, but it's the only way to reach a brighter future. Love does not keep score, although it is not stupid. Even as we fight the good fight, we realize that the greatest battle is within. Even as we struggle, we are free.

But What About Hitler?

The gnawing question will hang on through ages of debate and soul-searching: Is there reconciliation on the path of Love with the evil in this world? I've posed it to teachers, philosophers, rabbis, and His Holiness the Dalai Lama (who would have every justification for despising the Communist Chinese invaders conducting systematic genocide in his native Tibet.)

The answer seems to be that “evil” is merely the ultimate extreme manifestation of the deceived self-important ego. "Good & evil" are actually "smart & really stupid."

Such a statement may seem all too facile to us unenlightened pilgrims, struggling here in the apparent-real world of rape, murder, terrorism and war. But the actual enemies are ignorance, fear, and hatred, both within and without. These three "poisons" of the ego-identity affect us all. There's a bit of the bigot, the greedy, the psychopathic in each of us. The Dalai Lama has said he feels sorry for his brutal oppressors, as one would for “lost children.”

Evil is an affliction that we're all having. It both defies and defines by contra-distinction the egoless enlightened mind. We say, there, but for the grace of God, go I. Actually you have already been there, many times. Furthermore, you may yet be there again, so capricious can human character be. Judge not, lest you be judged. That superiority you’re feeling is a trap that perpetuates what you think you must hate. The best approach to “evil” seems to be enlightened equanimity.
