Teachings from the Western Mystery Traditions:
The Esoteric "Paths of Return"
Esoteric and Exoteric Spirituality Distinctions

The word “esoteric” has always scared many people, because they don’t understand what it really means. They confuse it with the words “occult” or “cult,” which, to some, means either superstitious, or even worse, downright evil.
The word “esoteric” simply means hidden. It speaks to the inner side or the uncreated side of life, describing reality in its larger holistic patterns known only from within until manifested in an exoteric reality. The word “exoteric” means outer, or external public knowledge of the less initiated masses.
Esoteric wisdom is known as “the wisdom of the Ages,” having come down century after century in the oral teachings of the wise ones from every branch of religion or spirituality. No one is absolutely certain if its origins. Many believe it comes from extra terrestrial beings from an ancient time. Timeless esoteric knowledge explains reality in its widest, most sacred sense, containing all we know of the spiritual, often yet-to-be-recognized greater dimensions of consciousness. It offers us the principles that govern all life, from the cosmos down into our little personal lives.
Esoteric wisdom is passed from age to age in the oral traditions of the mystery schools, since esoteric knowledge demands special training by initiates and adepts to be perceived. As time elapses, the true study of esoteric philosophy and transmission will open up, and the whole fabric of thought built up around our modern understanding of the self and its reasons for being here will be shifted to higher planes. All will be recognized and used in connection with our soul relationships.
The esotericist knows that behind all happenings in the world of phenomena exists the world of energies, all of which move and work through the Law of Cause and Effect, or Karma, in our personality lives. Our karma and the Law of Attraction are what determine the content of our personal lives. The esoteric life is the life of your soul.
Here are some comparisons that will make this all quite plain:
Esoteric
Inner
Entering Heaven while living
Saving oneself by inner work
Worship of Spirit within
Resolving karma
Many lives to live as a soul
Individual transformation
Realization
Disciples’ lower nature crucified
Seeing one’s truth in all situations
Direct perception
Consciousness
Contemplation/Invocation
Personal inner experience
Living Master
|
|
Exoteric
Outer
Entering Heaven after death
Being saved
Worship an outer personality
Forgiving sin
Only one life to live
Second Coming
Knowledge
Savior crucified
Moral dictates
Reason, Logic memorized
Conscience
Prayer
Books and media
Dead Master

The initiate in training is taught the following from one’s esoteric teachers:
• To become aware of the forces making up his or her personality and a recognition of that which a person has magnetically brought into expression from one’s karma and attractions.
• To become sensitive to the impelling energies of the soul, which emanate from the higher mental plane
• To recognize the conditioning energies in one’s environment, not as events or circumstances, but as energy in action, thereby entering into the world of meaning. The student learns that these outer events are simply symbols of what is occurring in the inner worlds.
• To discover the higher esoteric realms where the Masters of the Wisdom live and serve as our guides
Esotericism, then, is the bringing down to earth those spiritual energies which emanate from the highest planes of reality and anchoring them in the ordinary human world.
