What Secret?

I had debated writing this. I am a psychic, an artist, and now a publisher. I'm not a writer. However, it has been festering in me, and well... every publication needs an S.D. (Shit Disturber), so, here I am, and here it goes:

"The Secret" is not a secret. It is a slick repackaging of things that are already in the teachings of just about every spiritual belief system. It is in ancient scrolls, bibles and books. Our columnists have been telling you about it for years. It has been in the Pearls of Wisdom Page of this magazine for the past 4 years. And now, it has been promo-hyped beyond anything we have seen in recent years. The producers and PR firms must be laughing all the way to the bank. Umm...make that, "chortling with glee".

Yet, this DVD has sold millions, and made millions. Don't get me wrong- I am not knocking it. It reaches people in a modality that is current, stimulating, and easily understood. That is wonderful. As a communication tool, it is very successful. What bothers me, and many others in the spiritual community, is that we have been teaching it for years. Millennia, actually. And, the part of human nature this DVD is appealing to, is a place we all need to grow away from. It is not a magic pill.

Yes, it can indeed work, has done so for many, and there are a variety of ways to do it. The principles are easy. An infant does it without even knowing it. But does it always work?

An interesting point to consider is that of a man who played the Devil's advocate on Larry King. He stated that he did not believe the principal worked. It was a sham, and that in some cases, people could suffer emotionally and physically. Frankly, he made a few good points.

He presented the illustration of a woman who, through "the Secret", cured herself of cancer without any further medical treatment. His point was that he feared many people will try this, negate medicine, and die. He furthered by saying that he believed that if you took 100 women with cancer who went for cancer treatments, and 100 who did not, but used "The Secret" instead; he would bet that the women who went for the cancer treatments would survive longer and better. I tend to agree with him.

Why? I myself, have used this principal and found it to work, and many times. However, there is the principal of Karma, and why we are here on this plane of existence. The Movie "The Secret" does not address that. I find this to be a problem. It is being promoted as a magic pill to what is often a vulnerable group of people. Now, no doubt, we will see a parade of expensive spin-off products and "Secret Accessories" you just can't manifest without. I hope we are spared designer manifestation boards.

Fast, fast, fast relief?

When you focus your attention on getting something done, you take action. An Action involves the focusing, directing, and expending of energy. It all starts with a Desire. Is the Universe a total giving machine? Yes, it can be. But what if manifestation is possible only if an opportunity is meant to present itself?

An Argument: You are driving through the desert, and 200 miles from a gas station or rest stop. You have to whiz really, really badly. You desire, with all your heart, all your energy, a clean bathroom. You are 200 miles away. Is anyone able to manifest that bathroom where one does not exist for 200 miles?

Maybe in another dimensional reality. But the reality you are especially aware of is the one your bladder is urgently reminding you of. That is the one you presently exist in.

You pull the car over and find Blessed relief by a cactus. Hopefully, it was not a prickly pear type. A lizard is casually sunning itself nearby.

But your desire was soooooooo strong, and the need was truly there- and urgently so. You were certainly motivated enough. Your mind was totally obsessed- so what happened? Why couldn't you manifest an actual bathroom?

There's always a disclaimer: Time.

If you could manifest every thought in your head into the present reality, you would live in the total chaos of your mind's creativity. The way some minds work, that could be a real problem. And village idiots are always very thorough in what they do. But, 200 miles from here- or approximately 4 hours if you do the legal speed limit (ok... 2 hours, after all, you gotta go real bad), the rest stop would be there. But at the time you really, really needed it- it wasn't.

Which leads us to ..."There is always a rationalization in these stories"

You could not manifest a proper toilet because:

1.) Per your Astrologer: There was, at the time, a Mercury Retrograde in your 8th house of your bladder, in Scorpio.

2.) Per your Psychic: I told you this trip would bring you a lot of pressure.

3.) Per your Mother- "So, who told you to go for a drive through the desert? Are you nuts? "

4.) Per your Clergy: " Many a Prophet and Saint were cleansed and found Divine release this way."

In any event, cosmic or otherwise, it simply was your Karma to not manifest a toilet. Maybe there was a valuable karmic lesson in this.

Perhaps by going in the desert, that cactus benefited from the moisture. Perhaps that lizard that made you elevate 10 feet in the air, mid-stream, had a good laugh at you. You made his day. Humor is a good thing for everyone's soul. Maybe the lesson here, is that if we could manifest everything we wanted, it would not necessarily be the best thing in the overall.

Maybe we should just be a tad content with getting what we need? After all, you did get to go. Did you not feel relief? Perhaps, it would even be a bit selfish, and that manifestation occurs when we are ready to receive a blessing, and take action for one- modern plumbing at more crucial moments, aside.

The point is that it can work and often does. But a secret is something that has not been revealed. This law is no secret. It's been available to us all, all along, and free of charge (or at the very least, for a nominal charge in paperback).

Perhaps there is a higher purpose in this?

So before tacking up lottery tickets, pictures of hot lovers, houses, boats, cars, and everything else a Genie can schlep out of another dimension for you, consider pasting up on that manifestation board the following:

A picture of a stray and starving cat with a huge bowl of food and fresh water in front of it, a warm comfy bed, placed within a home with a loving, caring family. Paste on that board a picture of that foreign woman in the shredded dirty robes, crying with a starving child in her arms, and place before her an abundance of fresh fruits, vegetables, rice and protein. Along with that, paste a secure home around her with medical care and an education for that child.

Take the picture of the AIDs victim and paste a cure around him. Take a picture of the battered woman and paste manifestations of hope, a career, a home and enough food to feed her children. And then, as Dr. Gwen MacGregor suggested, take a picture of the world- the earth and tack up images of a healed earth- a restored ecco system, with people giving to others. Then place it next to images of benevolence and gentility. And focus on it daily.

When you have done that, then maybe we are ready to manifest and receive blessings. The "Secret "is not in what we can manifest for ourselves, it isn't even about saying thank you- although gratitude is good, but rather, it is what we can give to others, along with ourselves.

In any event, always remember to carry one of those little packets of Kleenex when you drive through a desert.
