Lapis Lazuli
The Blue Stone that symbolizes power and royalty

Lapis Lazuli is one of the power stones of the ages, a precious commodity known in ancient Babylon and Egypt and have been valued as much as gold. This Royal Blue stone was used as an amulet, protection from physical danger, as medicinal stone or used to adorn ceremonial robes. Lapis is often thought of as being deep royal blue but the finest material has a slight Violet cast.
This stone is a conglomerate rock composed of Lazurite, Pyrite and Calcite. The deep blue color comes from Lazurite and Pyrite adds the distinctive gold flecks. The gem has been mined continuously for more than 6000 years at the Kakcha River in the Badakshan region of Afghanistan. Lapis is generally cut as cabochons, tumbled, slabs, or used as carvings.

Hardness: 5 to 6
Crystal System: Isometric, rare crystals, mostly dense, grainy aggregate
Chemistry: Na8 (Al 6 Si 6 O 24) S2 sulphur containing sodium aluminum silicate
Refractive Index: 1.50
Fluorescence: strong, white
Location: Kokcha River Valley, Afghanistan; Ovalle, Cordillera, Chile; Egypt; Mt. Visuvius, Italy; near Lake Baikal, Russia; Cascade Canyon, San Bernardino Mountains and Ontario Peak, California and in the Sawatch Mountains, Colorado, USA

Name:
The modern name originated from the Latin words: Lapis meaning stone and Lazuli meaning blue. The root word Lazuli is an older form of Allazward or Arabic word L’azulaus both meaning sky, heaven or blue. The French word Azur and the English form Azure came from the same roots.
Historical Presence:
43rd Millennium B.C. ancient records states Puabi was the fist Sumerian Queen dressed in gems and precious metals, her royal robes were made of gold and silver, studded with Lapis Lazuli
2nd Millennium B. C. Assyrian tablets states the gem as an article of tribute. The Babylonian goddess in preparation on her descent into the underworld adorned herself with ornaments of lapis lazuli and wore great lapis lazuli necklace.

15th Century B.C. in Berlin Museum holds a papyrus for the curative powers of three precious stones; Lapis Lazuli, Malachite and Red Jasper strung as beads for a child’s necklace. The cure was affected by reciting a specific formula over the child the incantation called upon the disease to be drawn from the patient, through the beads into the air and water.
1st Century Romans Pliny states “Sapphiros contains spots of gold; sometimes blue and rarely tinged with purple.” Greek and Romans powered the blue gem and used as general tonic and an effective purgative

14th Century Chevalier Jean de Mandeville states “Lapis Lazuli, the magnet stone is found in parts of Armenia, it is a blue stone slightly shiny and opaque, protects against illness that causes fainting due to a weak heart; prevents conception when carried by a man or a woman

Legends say, King Solomon wore a ring of Lapis Lazuli given by an Angel of the Lord. The ring allowed him to control the legions of demons to build the Temple of Solomon.
