Vocational Astrology for Successful Actors

by Carin Martin
Genius hath electric power which earth can never tame.
Lydia M. Child

There is no great genius without some touch of madness. Seneca

In this third and final chapter of natal astrology for actors, we will have a quick look at the 11th house connections of two innovators in film acting. These two men, one heavily influenced by the other, are rare examples of international lasting fame. The effects of their careers on acting is so innovative as to be classed as Promethean in quality.

The first and most influential actor to bequeath the gift of fire to us mere mortals, is Marlon Brando.

I can recall that his chart is an example of one of those moments of embarrassing enlightenment for me. Many years ago I was at the point in astrology that all astrologers will recognize, when I felt there was little more to know about sun signs. I was a professional astrologer steeped in all the intriguing nuances of the craft-the multiple meanings of aspects, houses, and the more esoteric placements. Sun signs were so mundane and obvious as I moved through the maze of complex natal interpretation. In a conversation with a colleague, I mentioned how amazed I was to discover that Brando was an Aries. Certainly, one does not think of the sign of Aries when thinking of smoldering subtext or of brooding subconscious motivation. Certainly not, not brash, forthright, off the cuff, warrior Aries. How odd that Brando was an Aries. Then I was suddenly struck with how appropriate this sun sign was for this man. How obtuse it was for me to have missed it. I had over looked two of the earliest words associated with the sign- "Pioneer" and "Physical".

Certainly I had seen the self indulgent, carelessly self centered side of Aries in both Brando's portrayals and his personal press, but I had over looked the core of his genius. His overwhelming Aries physical expression - all the famous joking about his "muttering, mumbling, and scratching". The nonverbal, physical nuances-the motion or lack thereof, were his main mode of expression. Brando used his physicality in his acting like no other actor before him. He pioneered an entire school of acting by physically expressing not only what his words were saying but the subtext of what his motivations truly were. He was a muscled bundle of electrifying physical contradictions that enflamed and illuminated both the stage and the screen with his portrayal of Stanley in "Streetcar Named Desire".

I blush now to admit such an obvious oversight. But this is why teaching is as beneficial to the teacher as it is to the student. Students bring the freshness of their wonder of discovery which so often rejuvenates the jaded teacher. In this case the "teacher" had overlooked the forest for the trees- a common advanced astrology phenomena. What sign is more suited to bring the physicality of acting into the center of focus than an Aries-and in this case, a double Aries since his Sun and Moon are in the sign.

There is so much here in his natal chart, but we will touch only on a few of the more striking aspects besides his double Aries status. Once again, just as the others in the preceding 3 parts of this series, he has a tenanted 11th house. This time the 11th house planet is Saturn in the critical 00 degree of Scorpio. The coloration of the planet and sign of 11th house connection indicates the form the fame of the subject will take. Considering the innovation that Brando brought to his work, one would expect, perhaps, Uranus in the 11th house. But Saturn in Scorpio actually makes more sense when you consider what his effect was on the public consciousness.

Saturn the planet of authority and the status quo in the sign of Scorpio, ruler of the 8th house of sex, death and transformation is central to effect of his fame. Brando's biggest notoriety was his first role of Stanley in "Streetcar". This character created by the genius of Tennessee Williams was beyond anti-hero, yet compelling all the same. His animal coarseness and brutal instinctual psychological and physical violence defied all authority <Saturn>. The threat of his physicality went beyond sexuality even in his most mundane moments <Scorpio>. And as abhorrent as his behavior was, the character was still uncomfortably identifiable to the audience <critical degrees>. There is something about a planet in critical degrees that is universally recognizable to others. Add to this 11th house effect the fact that Uranus the Prometheus of the planets is also in 00 critical degrees and in trine to the 11th house Saturn. Also add to this the fact that his natal Pluto, ruler of the 8th house of sex, death and transformation is located in 8th house of Scorpio its natural house as well. It is no wonder that his first flash of fame was international, mesmerizing, and threatening all at the same time.

The T Square of his Jupiter, Uranus and Mc add to the tension of his personality. Note also how he has a Yod of his Mars <ruler of Aries> and his Uranus <ruler of the 11th house of fame> pointing directly at his "finger of God" to his Neptune <ruler of film> in the sign of Leo <sign of the actor>. All have factored into his lasting legend as an actor.

The armchair psycho analyst can have a field day when combining his natal chart with his biography. But our interest here has been the 11th house factor and the other aspects that support it in the creation of his world renown. But if you enjoy armchair psychoanalysis (no doubt the favorite pastimes of our society from biographers to media pundits) then I suggest you spend an afternoon viewing first "A Streetcar Named Desire" followed by his much later film, "Last Tango In Paris". If you are wisely nonintrusive enough to eschew the temptation for Mickey Mouse biographical psychology, then viewing these two films in sequence is an excellent way to observe the evolution of an amazingly transcendent acting talent.

The second Promethium actor's chart we will view for the 11th house fame factor is that of the late James Dean.

Here the 11th house tenant is his Moon in Scorpio. Even though James Dean was a great admirer and often compared to Brando. He was unique in his own way as well. Though one was mesmerized and fascinated by the acting of Brando, not many would want one of his characterizations over for dinner. There was always the impression that one wanted distance from this larger than life energy force <double Aries> that he represented. But James Dean had a different effect. Both men and woman felt parental towards his characterizations of boyish suffering souls. This is an effect of his fame factor planet in his 11th house- his Moon. There is a line from an old ballad that goes". . .heart is the fortune of all woman kind..." Well, heart is the fortune of James Dean as well. What brought him to fame in all three of his screen performances was the ability to "wear his heart on his sleeve"- make his torment apparent to the audience and draw them into it with "collective heart" recognition. His Moon <emotions> in the 11th house of the collective connected him with his audience's "collective heart". His emotions were both acutely sensitive and deeply rooted <Moon in Scorpio>. His acting method that brought him fame was in displaying the process used to bring these emotions to the surface and yet still try to mask them in the protective Scorpionic way. His actions were studies in sublimation for overwhelming emotional pain. This is exemplified by his Mars in Leo harshly squaring the 11th house Scorpio Moon.

His sun in Aquarius, the natural ruler, of the 11th located in his natal 3rd house of communication adds power to this placement and further connection with Aquarius's rulership of the 11th house of public renown. His aspect pattern is one of the tension filled T Square which filled his portrayals with inner conflict. All five T squares involve the moon's nodes with Jupiter, Uranus and Saturn. Once again the emotion of the Moon is at the core and his struggle is ageless and recognizable for us all. Like Brando, so many of his biographical events are here in his natal. Since the 11th Moon was the core of his fame much of the torment he portrayed is due to lack of nuturance. In his private life this was sadly true due to the traumatic early loss of his Mother. Natal Moon in Scorpio is noted for its depth of emotion, and, also, its need to hide its emotions from others in self protection-both are keywords to the effect of Dean's acting process.

Other aspects involved in this loss of mother are indicated by his natal Moon in hard square with violent Mars and his natal Uranus in the fourth house of home indicating a sudden upheaval in early home life. Publicly revealing this emotional pain - Moon in Scorpio in the 11th house-was the core of his fame. Certainly his chart is a harsh example of the high cost of fame. In this case the cost was the loss of his mother at an early age which created the inspiration for his talent. Of course, James Dean fame was posthumous, sadly another connection to his Scorpio Moon and its natural ruling house the 8th which is tenanted by Mars, Pluto and Jupiter.

As mentioned in the preceding chapters of this series, a tenanted 11th house brings some sort or fame/public recognition. It may be fleeting or lasting; it may be beneficial or negative; it may be world wide or limited to ones home town or career-but at some time in the subject's lifetime the 11th house planet will be influenced by transit and bring that proverbial "fifteen minutes of fame".
