The Holistic Mystic:

The Oldest Food

by Lonny Brown, HHc.
It took millions of years for Earth’s mineral skin to ferment itself into a complex life-sustaining matrix of organic nutrients and trace elements. Just fifty years of intensive irrigation, chemical pesticides, and caustic synthetic fertilizers have contaminated, eroded, and exhausted a good portion of that rich heritage. Within a generation, we have forgotten what real food tastes like, and - not coincidentally - what real health feels like.

Intelligent responses to this sorry state of affairs include returning to whole, organically-grown produce and grains, taking vitamin supplements, and using natural herbal seasonings, teas and medicines. Other potent concentrated nutrient sources popular among survivalist and health-food aficionados include "super foods" such as nutritional yeast, probiotic acidophilus yogurt, bee pollen, fermented soybean pastes (miso), wheat grass juice, and the aquatic fresh-water micro-vegetable, algae.

Back to Basics

Virtually the first link in the primal food chain, algae is a plant-form that dwells in every square inch of water and fertile soil. More basic than bacteria, it sustains virtually all life in the sea, and generates eighty percent of the world’s oxygen supply.

Freshwater blue green algae, also called Spirulina, contains all the essential amino acids, more protein and chlorophyll than any other food, and a host of vital trace elements. It is a rare vegetarian source of vitamin B12. One gram of freeze-dried algae contains more of the powerful anti-oxidant, beta carotene than seventy grams of carrots. (Dr. Charles Simone, M.D., author of Cancer & Nutrition, maintains that beta carotene, which becomes vitamin A in our bodies, is the single most important nutrient for reducing cancer risk.) Psychology Today magazine reported that Spirulina contains twenty times more protein than soybeans and two hundred times more protein than beef.
Pristine Source

One of the most pristine sources of wild freshwater algae on earth is the snow-fed Upper Klamath Lake, in the Cascade Mountains of Oregon. This natural deep mountain reservoir has been trapping minerals, volcanic silt, and glacial run-off since the last ice age, 10,000 years ago. The richest biomass source on the planet, it produces 200 million pounds of the super-concentrated fresh water food.

Survival Food

Spirulina contains all the dietarily essential nutrients required by humans: proteins, carbohydrates, starches and sugars, lipids (fats), nucleic acids (DNA and RNA), vitamins, chlorophylls and other biologic essentials. Available in health-food stores as freezed dried powder, it adds a fresh, earthy flavor to fruit smoothies and soups alike. Spirulina is super-digestible and has a reputation as an energy food, digestive aid, cleanser, immune booster, and mood stabilizer. Many algae products are also available in capsules or chewable tablets.

U.S. government researchers have stated that 99% of Americans are deficient in minerals. As more land loses its organic base, fresh water algae may become an important rescue remedy for the 21st Century.
