The Marriage of
the Ego and the Soul
|
|
|

We hear the words "ego" and "soul" a lot. But what do these two words really mean to us? Well, your ego is the executor of all your personality1s needs for security, and gratification of personal desires physically, emotionally and mentally. Your soul is experienced as that inner source who energizes you with life force and a sacred sense of meaning and purpose. It delights in the Now! The soul is the mediator between matter and Spirit, a divine Adjuster designed to bring these two aspects of your nature together as one. When you are being "too spiritual," your soul will crave a human sensual experience; when you are being too "earthly," you soul will bring you a sense of deeper meaning and purpose, and put you back in touch with the essentials of life. In psycho-spiritual terms, the soul is the Self, our essential nature that is both human and divine.
Our current evolutionary task as human beings is the conscious joining, or marriage, of ego and soul, which happens in our inner, subjective life. But the blending of these two energetic states of being is not a simple matter. In fact, this divine Love Affair is quite an ordeal which, if focused upon with a clear intentionality, sets off a potent, life-changing experience of death/rebirth, or transformation. Our old ways of being mere separate egos must die as the soul1s pure impulses are felt and seek concrete expression through us. The soul is instinctively compelled to serve the whole with the same voracity as the ego is compelled to serve itself. Never have there been two more incompatible bedfellows!
Until we look deeperxxand then we can s
ee that these two are truly designed to mate and live together as one within this fragile human skin. And why might that be so? Well, the soul lives in a formless world, and for it to enter into existence in the human kingdom and be expressive here, it must put on a human body. So our soul created a psyche as its double, or mirrored image, so it could see and feel itself as human with five physical senses. The soul delights in sensual experience!
Your psyche, which is the entirety of both the unconscious and conscious minds, contains all the blueprints or organizing principles around which all potential human qualities and experiences are built. And when all these potentials are actualized, the psyche becomes the archetypal Self, or the essence of any particular human being. In other words, through this process of awakening, the soul becomes fully embodied as human. The soul is consciousness. In other words, we are consciousness.
Without an ego, the human/divine psyche our incarnated soul, would have no guardian to look out for its individual safety and needs; it would be at the mercy of all the dangers that lurk through the dark alleyways of concrete reality. Though our egos have been given a bad press and especially by many religious groups without it we would all be living in back wards of mental hospitals, unable to tie our shoes!
So the soul longs to merge with a healthy ego so it can express in each individual person here in this world, and experience this life here as an individual human being. And the ego longs to merge with the soul, its higher Self, so it can feel important and know that it is serving a worthy cause. Nothing makes an ego feel better than to be aggrandized, right?
Now, an unhealthy ego has never learned to meet its basic needs, and therefore cannot serve the soul. It would take even the most sacred experience or set of instructions and turn them into an egoistic pursuit for selfish gratification of some kind. A healthy ego, on the other hand, has met its basic needs, and now bored with itself, will start "looking upward" to find a greater source of gratification meeting the being needs of the individual it is inhabiting, the needs of its psyche1s essential nature.
As the ego ascends in consciousness, it encounters the contents of the giant unconscious mind of psyche, who calls out to the Soul. As the Soul responds, it begins to descend into matter. The two meet in the heart, where your psyche will widen and dissolve any accumulation of substance that is still "egotistical" and "alchemicalize" it into the pure gold of the true Self. It will cleanse it and shape it in light. This may feel like "death" to an ego as its old ways will begin to fall away. But with time, the ego starts to feel lighter, and filled with light, it realizes it is learning to live in bliss, or the rapture of being alive.
Embodiment is a sacrifice for our soul as well. In its own dimension, the soul has no boundaries; it can fly, expand, and experience The All at once! Haven1t you experienced this sometimes when you are sitting outside looking up at a cloud or a beautiful sunset, and realize you are feeling transparent and filled with feelings of love and a quiet joy? I love that feeling so! As do we all. It1s at moments like these, that we are in our soul1s consciousness, no longer limited by the confines of our finite body. Instead of being ego-dominated humans, we've become soul-dominated personalities.
Understood correctly, then, ego and soul are divine Partners doing a very sacred work that only "a divine couple" can do. Together, while embodied, they perform the sacred activity of merging us back into oneness. When you become soul-dominated, a great cycle in your life ends, known as "the cycle of necessity," wherein you had to undergo rounds and rounds of lessons for the realization of your divinity.
And when we all awaken together as one group Soul,
a cycle of necessity will end for an enlightened Humanity. Having completed our work here, our consciousness will gently disentangle from the human condition and is then free to move on into another dimension of experiencing itself in some new guise, taking with it what is gathered here from its rich experience.
With an awareness that we are spiritual souls experiencing the human condition, we start to feel uplifted beyond the transitory meaninglessness of ordinary human existence, and are transported to a whole new state of consciousness, knowing we each have a part in this divine world drama. We realize this has been our intention since the beginning of Time. As so poignantly described by T. S. Eliot:
"And the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we
started and know that place for the first time." |
