Not Writing

I made a commitment this summer to visit Ohio's ancient Native American mounds. I decided to sit and lay on the mounds and put my ear to the earth. With my left ear on the ground, I would simply listen. No tape recorders, no thick papered journal, no bevy of ink pens. I would sit and walk, and walk and sit. I would place my ear to the earth and listen for what comes.
This seemingly easy and enjoyable task has been challenging to pursue. I don't like the 'not-writing'. My mind begins to jumble with too many unexpressed thoughts. I want to write something fabulous, meaningful, an impressive opus, or a tale that tantalizes and pleases the reader who burns to turn the next page. But nothing has come forth.
Last week I made yet another trek to the Great Serpent Mound of Ohio. Seated beneath the mound's dolomite cave last autumn, I received a major story with full-blown characters and plot lines. There were great conflicting twists in the tale, and I felt ready for the telling. But now, the characters have kept silent, as if they are waiting for me to catch up to their succeeding pace. They walk ahead of me and I struggle to follow after. This task of slowing down, and stopping to listen, has caused me to fall further and further behind them. Sometimes, I can't see or hear them at all.
While encircling the Great Serpent on this Summer Solstice, I found with each step that I spoke a prayer for deeper quietude despite my fear of losing the characters of my unwritten story. I beseeched the heavens to help me find a way to be a channel for grace. I kept repeating that phrase, "let me be a channel for grace". I ascribed no meaning to how this prayer would manifest in my life. I listened to the syllables reverberating like a chant as I walked and sat, then sat and walked.
Channel for Grace
Within a few days, she phoned me, Grace that is. Grace is a young woman of 26 years who is experiencing a daunting transition point in her life. She is the niece of a dear friend who reached out in search of guidance. After our call, I tingled from head to toe.
We never know how our prayers will be answered. We imagine in the grand and the poetic. We experience in the real simple, which becomes the reality of the poetically grand. Touching another, being a shoulder, a supportive lift for one in need is how I learn to channel grace.
Listen as the Story Speaks
Listening is not a skill we go to school to learn. We learn to read and write. We learn to give speeches, but how do we educate ourselves in the art of listening? I wonder, is the channel for grace housed in the inner ear, the silent place of observing the listener at our core?
Ah, I see my characters again, just a glimpse of them over the distant hill. I know if I keep walking, eventually I will catch up to them. But I will not hurry. I will stop and sit and listen when spirit calls. After all, I enjoy being a channel for Grace in whatever name or form she takes.
I cannot anticipate the unfolding story. Putting my ear to the earth is an act of surrender. The story passes through me like smoke in a pipe stem, like rain through the hollow reed.
I am the channel.
The story is the grace.
