Alternative Health & Healing: Heal Your Heart, Heal Your Life.

What Motivates You?

by Rena Greenberg
“It’s time to dump the guilt, shame and blame and move into faith, hope and love as your motivators.” These are the inspirational words of the best-selling and highly respected Physician and Author, Dr. Bernie Siegel. I had the honor of having Dr. Bernie Siegel write the foreword for my just released book, The Craving Cure: Break the Hold Carbs and Sweets Have on Your Life (McGraw-Hill, 2007). Within that brilliant phrase is the essence of what I am here to share with you.

Guilt, blame and shame just do not work in any facet of our lives—and especially not in the area of weight loss. It may appear that when we criticize ourselves for eating too much that we are taking on an important job. “Certainly I need to reprimand myself for over indulging,” You may defend. But I ask you, “Where has all that scolding, beating yourself up and feeling bad gotten you? Has it changed your behavior? Does it inspire you to eat more healthfully or maintain an exercise regime over the long haul?” I would guess that the answer is no.

This is because our subconscious mind is always seeking pleasure. We are wired to desire happiness and good feelings. So when you reach for that extra scoop of ice-cream because you remember the joy ice-cream brought you as a child, you are attempting to make yourself feel good. Then when your conscious mind steps in and tells you how foolish you are to make such self-defeating choices, the good feeling wanes and you naturally begin to feel remorseful. And then what? Do you then clean up your act and eat healthy, balanced meals on a regular basis, happily foregoing all the rich deserts, now that you have seen the light? Do the stern lectures to yourself from your rational mind stop the subconscious from desiring another sweet, rich, feeding frenzy? They do not.

And the reason why is because you are still always seeking pleasure subconsciously.

Now that you are feeling bad about yourself, you are really in need of some distraction and pleasure. That is a perfect opportunity for your subconscious mind to cheer you up in the only way it knows how—in the way that it has been programmed to do. You can be sure that inner pictures of ice-cream laden with syrup and rich, tasty treats will begin to flood your mind. You can run and you can hide, but these inner pictures are within you and will drive you to take your next action—most likely to eat these “forbidden” foods. On and on the cycle continues as you continue to seek pleasure in the only way your subconscious mind knows, since it is following an automatic program that may have been installed decades ago.

The only one who can change that program is you! You are in the driver seat of your life and it’s up to you to plant new images into your subconscious mind—images that will lead you in the direction that you want to go.

Remember the wisdom of Dr. Siegel. Let’s dump that old blame, shame and guilt! It does not work and it never will. Let’s get motivated by something that always works and that is love. Love is the strongest, most powerful, effective motivator there is. When you have a baby, what motivates you to walk around completely sleep deprived and care for that baby around the clock? Of course it is the love that you feel for that child. The love is bigger than you and it completely overtakes you, guiding your every loving gesture and utterance towards your beloved baby. When your spouse, friend or parent is sick all night long and you are up caring for him or her, is it guilt or blame that inspires you to tenderly nurse your loved one? If you are able to sustain the caretaking, it is most likely your affection for this person that allows you to offer such gentle, comprehensive care.

It’s time that you started to give that love to yourself! You may say that you don’t have time to fix a salad for yourself, and yet you would spend 45 minutes driving to the local pharmacy to pick up a prescription for your child, or go out of your way to give a dear friend a ride to the airport. People who care for their health and their bodies have the exact same amount of time that you have. The difference is that the program in their subconscious mind is ordering them to make exercise a priority—before anything else, and eating healthy food a must. Give the love to yourself that you so desperately crave.

When you decide to start eating when you are physically hungry rather than starving yourself only to binge later, know that you have the power to implant these new suggestions on your inner mind. The power is within you to change on the inside. When the inner changes, the outer behavioral changes naturally occur. The first step is making the decision to be transformed and understanding that the shift has to go deeper than the conscious, rational mind. Your subconscious mind has to be convinced that you are worthy to receive such a precious gift from yourself—the gift of health and freedom. Decide today that you are worthy of the love that you give so freely to others. Let that love motivate you to care for yourself, honor your body and to experience the magnificence within you. Let that love motivate you to stop using your body as a dumping ground for foods that are poisonous to your system. And let that love urge you to take a chance and start moving your body in new and fun ways. Your life is worth it! Let love inspire you to give yourself a second chance.
