An Analysis Example

I used to do an astrology show on radio in Philadelphia once a month. Many, many of the listeners became clients. One client in particular had worked so well with me that she acted almost literally as an agent of mine, advertising and referring me to family and friends all over. In one appointment for our consultation, I opened the door and she had someone with her, which is completely out of the question in my consultations. It was her sister. She had forced her sister to come to see me for reasons I would later learn about.
This client had referred so many people to me and had been so wonderful that I could not even become irritated with this surprise consultation. Despite the fact that I wasn’t prepared at all, I took the birth information, made my standard printouts and, after the first consultation, I sat across from her sister at my desk and conducted a consultation, completely cold and unprepared. I was on the hot seat. I knew I would be proving myself in the eyes of this woman. This is a situation that you never want to be in. You cannot prove or disprove astrology but I decided that I would make the best of it because her sister had been so helpful and loyal to me.
I asked the client to give me a second while I looked at her horoscope (below). Before you read on, take as long as you need to analyze it so you can compare notes.

Analysis
When you know what to look for and you have a system, analysis isn’t something that you fret over and I was able to put things together here pretty quickly. In fact, it was less than 2 minutes. These are the keys as I saw them:
a) The first impression (always a hemisphere emphasis) lower hemisphere emphasis alerted me to a focus on the formative years of development, that there would probably be something about a parent, about her home life, left unresolved and carried forth into adulthood. This was immediately corroborated by the Saturn-Mars conjunction in IV with Mars ruling X. In an instant, with Saturn ruling VII and with the Nodal Axis being exactly squared by Neptune, a maternal influence and focus was highlighted. The suggestion was that the mother’s influence played a role in relationship orientation. The Cancer Ascendant would further corroborate the importance of emotional security needs fulfilled through the family. What’s more, that she was forced to come to this consultation by her sister put it all in focus for me. No doubt about it.
b) The Aries Point Sun would need to project order, management, etc, expressed to others dramatically through a personality that needs recognition, all shown to others through an emotional, nurturing, family oriented image. AP=Sun=Sat/Plu can go one of two ways: there can be a projection of a tremendous ambitious or work ethic or a life plagued by difficulty, especially in the later years of life. Here, with Sun/Moon=Jup/Plu and glancing ahead to the 6th House influences (also looking at the client and making deductions on the spot), I assumed that this is a hard working, successful woman on her level. She was dressed with class and carried herself like a winner.
c) The emphasis in VI, coupled with the strength of Capricorn certainly highlights the importance of her work. Would she be a workaholic, perhaps to cover over relationship challenges?
d) The conjunction of Venus and Mercury alerted me to an idealistic focus, especially in Sagittarius. The opposition from Jupiter emphasized it even more (as well as the loose midpoint picture, Neptune=Node=Sun/Moon) and, on the health front brought considerations of sugar, of diabetes potential.
e) Through all of this, the horoscope did not suggest any major concerns with self esteem or lovability. This extremely attractive woman would easily be able to attract relationships. I would need to find out why they probably don’t work out once they are attracted.
f) Under normal circumstances, Uranus exactly on the Ascendant would have, before the fact, given me expectations of intense individuation or innovation. In this case, having had the advantage of seeing the person before seeing the horoscope, I knew that this Uranus position symbolized intense emotion. (This is a key point in any analysis. You never know before the fact how or if the person is using the potentials shown in the horoscope. Just because you read it in an astrologer’s book doesn’t make it a fact in reality).
g) Interruption of the collegiate education is likely.
h) I tried to make a guess at what she might do vocationally and what I came up with was property management.
It actually took longer to write these words than it took to deduce the above! After having seen so many horoscopes for so many years, patterns become clear very quickly. In the main, the horoscope is very low in tension. The conjunction of Saturn to Mars takes obvious precedence, tying together a parent with her life’s relationship orientation (Mars rules X; Saturn rules VII; both are in IV). Somehow, relationships would be her biggest challenge.
Consultation
I looked up at my client, smiled and said, “What’s the deal with this super closeness that you have with your mother?” She smiled a huge smile and started looking down at the desk to see her horoscope as if there was something there with a voice that told me a big secret. She wanted to see what I was looking at. I assured her that there was no need to see the horoscope. She responded, “Well, of all the things that you could have said in a first statement, you could not have asked something more meaningful. I am extremely close to my mother. We talk 3-5 times a day and she is just everything, my idol.” (As she said this, I counted the degree distance that would bring her Midheaven to opposition of Mars or Saturn or to their midpoint…..between 29 and 33). I asked if she had lost her father between the ages of 29 and 33. She corroborated that she was 31 when he passed. His influence had never been of special importance. It was all “mother.”
We discussed the mother relationship for a few minutes. In her conversation, she expressed an extreme degree of idealism that bordered on being childishly naïve. It was easy to sense a grand potential of vulnerable, thus victimized in relationships. “Jane, there is a suggestion here in the horoscope that the relationship index of your horoscope is somehow tied to the formative years of your development, to patterns learned in the home, probably from your mother.” This was a turning point for her and for the consultation. She sat in her chair staring at the gold records on the wall behind me. Then she stood up and said, “I didn’t realize it until this moment; I have been imitating my mother’s behavior with my father. She was and is a very giving woman. I wanted to be that for a man and it never works out. I was physically abused in my first marriage, thrown down the steps. It’s been one thing after the other.”
At the time, transiting Saturn squared this woman’s Venus so I questioned her about relationship tension. She replied that that is probably why her sister brought her to me. She’s been in a relationship with a man. She loaned him $10,000 to get started on his business. Now the business is off the ground, shows a profit, and he has become “distant.” I suggested to her that she make legal arrangements to get her money back and move forward.
There was much more to our time together. The point here is that a very meaningful consultation came out of 120 seconds of horoscope analysis. In times past, say, during the days when astrologer, Alan Leo lived, there was no such thing as this kind of analysis. Things were highly predictive. “Readings” were just that one way quotes of aspects and planets in Houses to another person. Modern analysis is more sophisticated. All it takes is knowing what’s important and unimportant. All it takes is an organized system. Once you’ve learned it, you will learn to get to the core of a horoscope quickly.
